Abstract

A process for splitting cyclohexenylcyclohexanone by hydrolysis to produce cyclohexanone comprises heating cyclohexenylcyclohexanone with water in the presence of a strongly acid cation exchanger i.e. a cation exchanger containing sulphonic or phosphoric acid groups, at a temperature above 100 DEG C. The cation exchangers specified are sulphonated cross-linked synthetic resins having polystyrene matrices. Examples are furnished. The process may be carried out continuously or discontinuously and apparatus for carrying out the continuous process is described with reference to a drawing (not shown).
