Abstract
Bipyridyls are produced by treating an interaction product of a metal and pyridine or an alkyl pyridine, heated to at least 70 DEG C. with water in the presence of free pyridine or alkyl pyridine. The process is preferably carried out at a temperature above 40 DEG C. Suitable metal-pyridine interaction products are, for example, sodium-pyridine, magnesium-pyridine and aluminium-pyridine. If desired, the metal pyridine interaction product may be diluted with an inert liquid before treatment with water.
