Abstract
Open chain N-vinyl amides are homopolymerized or copolymerized, in an aqueous solution or dispersion, using aliphatic azo-nitriles or azo-dicarboxylic acids or their derivatives, or mixtures of these compounds as catalysts. The polymerization is preferably carried out at a temperature from 0 to 140 DEG C., at atmospheric pressure and in an inert atmosphere. The pH of the solution or dispersion should not be below 6. The following comonomers are exemplified:-N-vinyl-pyrrolidone, vinyl acetate, the sodium salt of vinyl sulphonic acid, methyl acrylate.
