Abstract

A burner has means for varying the proportion of primary air to secondary air supply, the means being associated with means to vary the fuel supply and the total air supply so that this proportion increases when the latter two supplies decrease and vice versa. Combustion air is drawn through inlet 2 by fan 6 and passes a vaned deflector 10 as primary air and through register 18, 22 and vanes 13 as secondary air. A fuel injector 12 passes fuel through the centre of deflector 10. The register comprises a fixed disc 18 and a rotatable disc 22 both having corresponding slots 21, 23 and being biased by spring 28 to shut off air flow the disc 22 is rotated by piston 49 acting through lever 50. A flap 3 in inlet 2 is controlled by a piston 63 acting through levers 60, 58, the lever 58 having adjustable stops 59 for engagement by lever 60. Fuel is supplied to injector 12 from pump 34 through heater 35, and valve 37 and separator 36 to heat the latter two two return pipes 38, 40 contain valves 39 and 41, 37 respectively, the pipe 40 being connected to a chamber 44, Fig. 4, in separator 36. With the apparatus at rest flap 3, register 18, 22 and valve 37 are closed, and valves 39, 41 are open. Fan 6 and pump 34 are then actuated with the fuel returning to a reservoir via pipe 38. Valve 39 is closed causing pressure build up in injector 12 to move a piston to put pipe 33 in communication with the injector nozzle and with pipe 40 only part of the fuel reaches the nozzle and is ignited. Valve 41 is then closed and all the fuel reaches the nozzle and pressure builds up in separator chamber 44 to act on diaphragm 45 causing fluid from chamber 46 to act via pipes 48, 66 on pistons 49, 63 to open register 18, 22 and flap 3. As temperature or pressure in a boiler, for example, rises, the valve 37 opens under the control of a diaphragm 42 to pass a portion of the fuel back to the reservoir at the same time pressure in chamber 44 is lowered causing partial closure of register 18, 22 and flap 3.
