Abstract

Detergent tablets comprise (a) an acyl isethionate or acyl methylisethionate in which the acyl radical is derived from a fatty acid having 12-18 carbon atoms (b) a di-salt of an a -sulpho derivative of a saturated fatty acid having 12-18 carbon atoms and (c) a plasticizier having a fatty or waxy nature, e.g. soap, fatty acids, fatty amides and alkanolamides, lanolin, petroleum jelly, ethylene oxide condensates with higher fatty acids, alcohols and alkylphenols, higher alkyl esters of phthalic acid, and partial fatty esters of polyhydric alcohols, (a) and (b) totalling 40-70%, preferably 45-65%, of the combined weight of (a), (b) and (c) and the weight ratio of (a) to (b) being 10 : 1 to 1 : 4, preferably 5 : 1 to 1 : 2. Component (b) preferably consists of the di-salt of a -sulpho acids derived from hydrogenated tallow or coconut oil, and the cations present in components (a) and (b) are the alkali metals, normally sodium, ammonium or substituted ammonium such as triethanolammonium (a) and (b) are both preferably derived from hydrogenated tallow or coconut oil fatty acids. Soap is generally present as plasticizer, but other plasticizers usually in amounts of not less than 10% nor more than 35%, and preferably 15-30%, of the composition are suitably also present such plasticizers specifically mentioned are coconut fatty acid ethanolamide, stearic acid, tallow fatty acids, palm kernel oil fatty acid amide, the glycol monoester of hydrogenated tallow fatty acids and glycerol monostearate. The composition generally also contains 4-10% water and is formed into tablets by milling and plodding perfumes, opacifiers, dyes and small amounts of inorganic salts may be added at the milling stage.
