Definitions
- the invention relates to a combustible, cylindrical sleeve for accommodating propellant charge powder, having a dimensionally stable casing wall made of combustible, matted fiber material and an insert made of a textile fabric which is embedded in the casing wall. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for producing such a cylindrical sleeve.
- Cases have long been known as a component of firearm ammunition. They are used to hold the propellant powder, which is usually in granular form.
- sleeves have a circular-cylindrical and elongated hollow shape; the cylinder wall of the sleeve is referred to here as the jacket wall.
- Combustible cases burn up or are consumed as a result of firing. If this is done without leaving any residue, there is no need to remove any remains of the case before the next shot. Ideally, only a metal base attached to the outside of the case should be ejected.
- the sleeve is susceptible to breakage. If it falls to the ground or hits a solid object while being handled, cracking of the jacket wall or complete rupture may occur be the result of the sleeve. If the case is filled with propellant powder as intended, this can no longer be tolerated, since escaping propellant powder obviously poses an enormous safety risk.
- the invention involves embedding a liner, which is stretchable, in the shell wall of the sleeve.
- a liner which is stretchable
- the insert now has the function of keeping any cracks and fracture openings in the shell wall that may arise sealed against the escape of propellant charge powder, which it is able to do because of its elasticity.
- This enables a small thickness of the jacket wall sleeve in two ways.
- the mechanical strength that the jacket wall has from the outset without considering an insert can be less than been used up until now, as cracks and fractures are permissible.
- the liner itself can also be comparatively thin, since it is not intended to reinforce the jacket wall, but only to hold back the bulk powder inside the case.
- the extensibility of the insert should be measured in such a way that it can fulfill this function, i.e. bridging cracks and other fracture openings, through expansion, without reaching its breaking elongation.
- the correct elongation parameters in this sense can be determined empirically, e.g. B. by standardized drop tests, which were previously used to test the breaking strength of the known sleeves. Tests already carried out by the applicant with sleeves according to the invention have shown that the sufficient extensibility of the insert in the longitudinal direction of the sleeve is of greater importance than the extensibility in the circumferential direction.
- the extensibility of the insert is preferably achieved by forming it as a knitted fabric and very preferably as a knitted fabric, knitted fabric and/or crocheted fabric.
- the extensibility is the result of the thread guidance.
- the insert must of course also be combustible, it is usually made of cotton yarn. However, this itself is not extensible. If the yarn is also to contribute to stretchability, cotton yarn is replaced in whole or in part by a polyurethane-cotton blend yarn. Such blended yarn is commercially available. It regularly has a core made of polyurethane, which is covered with cotton.
- an insert consisting of only one layer of knitwear is preferred. It has been shown that the single-layer design is sufficient to reliably prevent loose powder from escaping through fracture gaps and other fracture openings in the casing wall.
- the arrangement of the insert is optimal in the middle. But an arrangement in the inner wall area is also without significant Impairment of the restraint function possible. Such an arrangement may be dictated by manufacturing.
- the insert is designed as an expandable tube whose central axis coincides with the central axis of the sleeve in the embedded state.
- the hose is preferably made seamless. Suitable stretchable hoses are manufactured industrially as knitted fabrics, in particular as knitted fabrics, crocheted fabrics and/or knitted fabrics, and are commercially available.
- tubular inserts enormously simplifies the production of sleeves according to the invention.
- the stretchable single-layer tube is expanded to, for example, a medium wall thickness and pulled in the axial direction of the screen mold over the raw felt built up to that point.
- the raw felt is then built up further until the final thickness is reached and then, as usual, pressed and hardened by heating.
- the insert is designed as a single layer and can be stretched both axially and radially.
- the textile fabric must be biaxially stretchable to absorb tears/breaks etc. of the sleeve and thus enable axial and radial stretching.
- the insert has at least two or three layers, of which a first layer can be stretched at least axially and a second layer can be stretched at least radially.
- a first layer can be stretched at least axially and a second layer can be stretched at least radially.
- a radial extensibility of the insert is to be understood here in particular as an extensibility of the insert with respect to a circumferential direction of the insert, in particular if the insert has a tubular shape or another, in particular cylindrical or part-cylindrical, hollow shape.
- the equivalent of the two Terms result in particular from the use of a tubular insert: if the hose is stretched radially, this stretchability is provided in particular by stretching the insert with respect to its circumferential direction.
- the insert is stretchable according to different designs due to a macroscopic elasticity of a material of the insert and/or due to a meshing of a knitwear of the insert.
- the interlining usefully has at least one natural and/or synthetic yarn, in particular a cotton yarn and/or polyurethane-cotton blended yarn and/or silk yarn and/or polyurethane yarn and/or nylon yarn , In particular consists of at least one such.
- the insert based on the thickness of the jacket wall, is arranged in the middle or closer to an inside or an outside of the jacket wall, with in particular an arrangement of the insert between the first quarter and the fourth quarter of the thickness of the jacket wall being provided.
- Tests by the applicant have shown that an arrangement of the insert between the first and the second third of the thickness of the jacket wall ensures retention of the propellant charge powder in the event of damage; this is also possible with a central arrangement and with an arrangement between the second and the third third of the thickness of the casing wall.
- the insert can also be arranged directly on an inside of the casing wall. Then the felting of the sleeve on the wire does not have to be interrupted in order to pull on the insert. Rather, the insert is pulled up first and then the felting begins.
- sleeve material is deposited in particular between the meshes of the insert, so that the insert is arranged reliably and firmly on the finished sleeve.
- a cylindrical sleeve is also to be understood as meaning a sleeve which, although it is of circular-cylindrical design for a substantial part of its longitudinal extension, has a different, in particular tapering, diameter towards its bottom and/or its tip.
- a method for producing a cylindrical sleeve in particular according to an embodiment of the invention, comprises at least the following steps: dipping a screen mold into an aqueous pulp containing nitrocellulose and cellulose; Suction of the pulp to the screen mold with the help of negative pressure, so that a fleece is formed; Pulling a tubular insert onto the screen form and/or onto the fleece formed up to that point.
- the liner is pulled open before the pulp is aspirated, or as an intermediate step between two aspiration operations, or during the pulp aspiration.
- the liner is pulled open before the pulp is sucked in, the liner will be located on the inside of the casing wall in the finished sleeve. If the insert is pulled open as an intermediate step between two suction processes and/or during the suction of the pulp, the selection of a point in time for pulling the insert can be used to determine in which region of the thickness of the jacket wall the insert is arranged in the finished sleeve.
- tests can be used to determine how long before the insert is pulled up and after the insert is pulled up, pulp must be sucked in in order to achieve a radially central arrangement of the insert with respect to the thickness of the casing wall.
- figure 1 1 shows, as an exemplary embodiment, a sleeve 6 according to the invention as part of a cartridge 1.
- the sleeve is elongated and circular-cylindrical and accommodates the granular propellant powder 4 in its interior.
- An insert 5 is embedded in the outer wall of the sleeve 6 .
- a base 2 made of brass with an igniter 3 is attached.
- the sleeve 6 is made of felted pulp and nitrocellulose fibers and conventional additives.
- the embedded insert 5 is an expandable tube that was seamlessly manufactured from a knitted fabric 12, here by way of example a knitted, crocheted and/or knitted fabric. Due to its shown embedding in the sleeve 6, its central axis coincides with the central axis of the sleeve.
- the hose is made of 50 percent normal cotton yarn and 50 percent polyurethane-cotton blend yarn, although tests have also shown that a variant with one-third cotton yarn and two-thirds polyurethane-cotton blend yarn is a good material for the hose.
- the blended yarn has a polyurethane core covered with cotton.
- the mixed yarn has a composition of 89% cotton and 11% PUR, with a PUR proportion of between 5% and 20% being possible in different versions.
- the tube forming the insert is highly extensible.
- the stretchability in the axial direction of the sleeve is additionally supported by the polyurethane-cotton blended yarn.
- the insert is exposed in the fracture opening and stretched there to such an extent that it opens the fracture opening to the granular propellant charge powder inside the propellant charge without tearing sleeve keeps closed.
- a typical sleeve according to the invention with an outside diameter of between 50 and 170 mm and a length of between 35 and 75 cm, has a jacket wall thickness of 1.5 mm to 4 mm, in particular 2.5 mm.
- figure 2 shows a photo of a sleeve 1 after a fracture test with insert 5 partially exposed at a fracture area 8.
- the arrangement of insert 5 between a radially inner part 6a and a radially outer part 6b of sleeve 6 is clearly visible 10 recognizable.
- the dark lettering on the outer part 6b of the sleeve 6 comes from the specimen identification of the fracture test that was carried out and is irrelevant in the present case.
- FIG 3 shows schematically a section of the knitwear 12, the tube of the insert 5 of the sleeve 6 from the 1 and 2 trains.
- the insert 5 as a knitted fabric 12, in particular as a knitted, crocheted and/or knitted fabric, provides very good high strength and high elongation values with a relatively low basis weight and a small radial dimension of the hose.
- Such textile surfaces are produced, for example, on circular knitting machines. With a circular knitting machine, for example, a seamless tubular insert can be produced as in the illustrated embodiment.
- a specific stitch weave 14 is used in the exemplary embodiment.
- a binding image 16 of this stitch binding 14 is from 3 apparent.
- the binding image 16 shows a portion of a variety of rows of stitches 18 in the vertical direction of the representation 3 are arranged one above the other, and a plurality of wales 20, in the transverse direction of the illustration 3 are arranged side by side.
- Each stitch 20.2 is passed at its lower end through the corresponding stitch 20.3 of the row of stitches 18.3 adjoining at the bottom and in turn guides the corresponding stitch 20.1 of the row of stitches 18.1 adjoining at the top.
- the mutually associated stitches 20 of the adjacent rows of stitches 18 form a wale 23 and are each guided on the same radial side of the tube of the insert; i.e. H. either all on the outside or all on the inside.
- Neighboring stitches 20 of a stitch row 18 are basically guided on the respective other radial side; i.e. H. when the one adjacent stitch 20 is guided on the inside, the adjacent stitches 19 and 21 are guided on the outside, respectively, and when the one adjacent stitch is guided on the inside, the adjacent stitches are guided on the inside, respectively.
- the interlining has a fabric pattern with between 20 (twenty) and 26 (twenty-six) courses per two centimeters of longitudinal extent, in particular between 23 and 24 courses per two centimeters.
- the interlining has a fabric pattern with between 21 (twenty-one) and 27 (twenty-seven) wales per two centimeters of circumferential extent, in particular between 23.5 and 24.5 wales per two Centimeter.
- the insert in the exemplary embodiment has a tissue stretch, in particular in the circumferential direction U (or radial direction R) of the sleeve and/or in the longitudinal direction L of the sleeve, of 5% to 20% compared to the unstretched state, in particular of about 11%.
- This state of strain is, at least in terms of magnitude, also the one in 2 Strain condition shown when the slight additional strain due to displacement at the fracture point is neglected.
- the seamless tubular insert 5 used in the exemplary embodiment has a maximum elongation of approximately 420% in the transverse direction of the illustration—that is, in the circumferential direction U of the hose.
- the maximum elongation is about 80%.
- a maximum elongation in the radial direction of the hose of the insert 5 can be calculated from or with the hose diameter in the unstretched state and the maximum elongation in the circumferential direction U of the hose, possibly taking into account an additional elongation in the longitudinal direction L.
- cellulosic fibers are suitable for the material of the insert 5, which are used as a single type (100% cellulosic fibers) or in a fiber mixture (e.g. cotton fibers with a synthetic material such as PUR).
- a fiber mixture e.g. cotton fibers with a synthetic material such as PUR.
- the (professional) adjustment of the fiber strengths and the technological parameters of the yarn and knitting production achieves the desired felting quality of the sleeve (when felting through the insert), i.e. it is ensured that the fiber mass hooked into the "loops" of the textile and thus prevents the sleeve body from separating or splitting.

Description

- Fig. 3

Fig. 1 und2 ausbildet. -
Fig. 3 ersichtlich.
