Definitions

  • the invention relates to an applicator for applying a coating agent (e.g., sealant) to a component (e.g., automotive body component), particularly for sealing or bonding a hemming seam to a motor vehicle body component. Furthermore, the invention comprises a corresponding application method.
  • a coating agent e.g., sealant
  • Automotive body parts e.g., doors or hoods
  • flared seams in which a sheet metal part is crimped around an edge of another sheet metal part, and then the two sheet metal parts can be glued together.
  • moisture penetrates into the gap between the two sheet metal parts and there leads to corrosion.
  • an applicator is known, which makes it possible to coat a flanged seam on the rear side of a motor vehicle door without the door having to be opened for this purpose.
  • This known applicator has a nozzle carrier with a plurality of legs, which are angled relative to each other. This makes it possible to pass the nozzle carrier through the gap between two adjacent, laterally overlapping motor vehicle body components (e.g., door and fender) so that the nozzle is then on the back and can coat the hemming seam.
  • This known applicator usually operates without contact, i. a physical contact between the applicator on the one hand and the motor vehicle body component on the other hand should be avoided.
  • This non-contact application method has various disadvantages, which are briefly described below.
  • a problem of the non-contact application method is due to the fact that the flanged seam to be coated is located at the rear of the motor vehicle body components and therefore is not immediately visible, which complicates the programming ("teach") of the application paths.
  • the orientation of the coating nozzle relative to the component surface is not visible, but can only be guessed, which complicates the programming.
  • the programming of the desired application path therefore takes place only in an iterative manner in practice.
  • First of all a programming is done, which is as good as possible.
  • coating agent is applied with the initial programming.
  • the application image is then inspected by, for example, opening the motor vehicle door and viewing the hemming seam on the inside of the motor vehicle door. This test of the quality of the sealed hemming seam then allows conclusions to be made in order to optimize the programming. For example, motion parameters of the robot and application parameters can be adjusted to optimize the coating result. This iterative optimization of the programming is carried out until the application result is satisfactory.
  • tactile application methods are also known from the prior art in which the applicator is in touching contact with the component to be coated during application.
  • the operator may apply a suitably shaped nozzle to the edge of the door to be coated, and then pull the nozzle along the respective component edge as the material exits the nozzle opening.
  • the nozzle opening and thus the applied web always has the same distance from the door edge.
  • the nozzle carrier must be designed to be stable.
  • the invention is therefore based on the object to provide a correspondingly improved applicator and a corresponding application method which avoids the disadvantages of the non-contact application method and the tactile application methods as much as possible and whose advantages are combined as far as possible.
  • a coating agent such as a sealant (eg PVC material, PVC: polyvinyl chloride).

  • the term of a component used in the context of the invention is to be understood generally and is not limited to motor vehicle body components.
  • the applicator according to the invention initially has a nozzle in accordance with the known applicator according to DE 10 2008 027 994 B3 in order to apply the coating agent in a specific beam direction to a component surface of the component to be coated.
  • the applicator according to the invention in accordance with the known applicator on a nozzle carrier to position the nozzle, wherein the nozzle carrier has a plurality of legs which are arranged one behind the other and angled relative to each other.
  • the individual limbs are each preferably straightforward when considered individually, but the individual limbs, viewed individually alone, can also be curved.
  • the above-mentioned nozzle is in this case located on the nozzle carrier and is preferably attached to the distal leg of the nozzle carrier.

  • the nozzle carrier thus serves in the applicator according to the invention firstly for the passage of the coating agent and secondly for the positioning of the nozzle.
  • the applicator according to the invention is characterized by the fact that on the Nozzle carrier (eg on the distal leg of the nozzle carrier) is arranged on the outside a spacer which projects in the beam direction of the distal leg and rests in the coating operation on the component surface of the component to be coated and thereby adjusts a predetermined application distance between the nozzle and the component surface, in particular one Application distance of substantially 2mm, 3mm, 4mm or 5mm, or any intermediate values.
  • the spacer has the advantage that the nozzle - unlike the known tactile application method - does not rest directly on the component surface, so that the nozzle can be aligned with the beam direction perpendicular to the component surface. This is advantageous because the applied spray jet then strikes the component surface with maximum energy. In addition, so-called chatter marks during application are avoided by the lack of contact between the contact between the nozzle on the one hand and the component surface on the other hand.
  • Another advantage of the spacer is that the applicator with the nozzle does not get caught on surface elevations resulting, for example, from adhesive leaks on a hemming seam or welds.
  • the application distance between the nozzle on the one hand and the component surface on the other hand is therefore adjusted by means of the spacer preferably so that the application distance is greater than the unevenness height of the surface elevations, which may result from adhesive leaks or welds. This makes sense because the nozzle then has no physical contact with the surface elevations during the movement over the component surface.
