Definitions
- the invention relates to a wet-strength paper bag or wet-strength cardboard with wet-strength adhesive joints of a starch-based adhesive.
- Paper bags made of kraft paper are glued to their bottoms to form a closed container which optionally has a valve opening in one of the bottoms.
- the bonding of paper sacks takes place with adhesives based on starch, in particular extrudable corn or potato starch.
- These water-based adhesives only produce the required adhesive bond with the paper layers if adequate wetting of the paper takes place.
- Cobb values of at least 30 g / m 2 are required. It is therefore not possible to bond wet-strength paper or wet-strength cardboard with a conventional starch adhesive because the connection to the paper material is not sufficiently made.
- conventional starch adhesives are themselves not wet-strength, as they dissolve at least under load during prolonged exposure to water.
- Water-resistant dispersion adhesives which could be bonded with wet-strength paper and are themselves sufficiently wet-strength, are not available.
- GB 1 239 636 A US 3,336,246 A . US 3,024,212 . US 2,463,148 . US 3,984,275 .
- DE 38 76 578 T2 and DE 1 567 373 A1 disclose the preparation of water-based adhesive based on an aqueous starch, wherein the adhesive by adding a strong alkaline agent, in particular sodium hydroxide, alkaline in the range between pH 10.5 and 12 or acid by adding acid in the pH range 3-7 can be adjusted.
- the water resistance of the adhesive results from the addition of a suitable resin, which may be, inter alia, melamine-formaldehyde resin and urea-formaldehyde resin.
- the present invention is therefore based on the object of providing an adhesive which itself is sufficiently wet-strength and has sufficient wetting properties for the bonding of wet-strength paper material, so that a wet-strength paper bag or a wet-strength cardboard with wet-strength adhesive seams can be produced with it.
- the solution of this object is achieved with a wet-strength paper bag or a wet-strength cardboard formed with a paper material having a Cobb 60 value of ⁇ 25 g / m 2 water absorption capacity according to DIN EN 20535 and wet-strength adhesive tapes prepared with a starch-based adhesive, as an additive an alkaline agent for raising the pH of the applied adhesive to a value between 7.5 and 9.5, preferably between 8.0 and 9.0, and a melamine-formaldehyde resin or urea-formaldehyde resin whose solids content is between 8 and 12% by weight, based on the solids content of the starch, as additives.
- a conventional corn-based or potato-based cold-swelling extruder starch has a pH value of 5 to 5.5 in the as-supplied state after dissolution.
- the invention is based on the finding that the pH must be carefully raised to a magnitude between 7.5 and 9.5. It should be noted that a Nachverkleist für the still existing shares of less digested (native) starch must be avoided, because otherwise the viscosity increases so much that a conventional use of the adhesive in production is no longer possible.
- the adhesive is applied, for example, in bag production with adhesive nozzles as a liquid in order to be able to meet the required production rate. Increasing the viscosity to a gel state is therefore not tolerable.
- the raised pH causes swelling of the fiber and thus the possibility of anchoring the starch in the paper fibers.
- the increased pH value also provides for a reduction in the action of the wet strength agent with which the paper material has been made wet-strength, ie the Cobb 60 value has been lowered, due to the improved wettability of the paper.
- the alkaline agent used to raise the pH overcomes the problem of wettability of the wet strength paper fibers.
- a weak alkaline agent such as soda.
- other weak alkaline agents such as sodium bicarbonate, potassium carbonate, ammonium carbonate, triethanolamine and ammonia solution.
- strong alkalis such as caustic soda, is only possible with careful addition and constant control of the pH.
- a melamine-formaldehyde resin or urea-formaldehyde resin is added to the adhesive according to the invention.
- the solids content of the resin is between 8 and 12%, preferably between 9.5 and 10.5 wt.%, Of the solids content of the starch.
- the finished starch adhesive is therefore added to the resin solution with about 30% solids content by stirring.
- a preferred melamine-formaldehyde resin is Madurit 114 of the Swiss company INEOS. Madurit MW 114 has a solids content of 30%.
- the adhesive has been used on a wet-strength paper bag for gluing the cross bottoms.
- the paper bag is made of wet-strength kraft paper with a Cobb 60 value below 20 g / m 2 .
- the bonds have been tested in accordance with DIN 55445 Part 1 (testing of seams on paper bags) under load in a water bath and have been stable for more than 8 days.
- Cement filled sample sacks (filling weight 50 kg) were irrigated for 1 hour at 70 l / m 2 , without the bag wall becoming soaked or the adhesive seams failing.
- the invention thus provides a starch adhesive which can be processed on wet-strength paper with full functionality and which is itself wet-strength and remains functional even under strong exposure to water.

Description
-
