Definitions

  • the invention relates to a container-like cargo transport unit for transporting cylindrical cargo items, such as coils, which cargo transport unit comprises a first side extending in a longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit and a second side opposite the first side; a first end transverse to the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit and a second end opposite the first end; a chute in the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit, comprising inclined support walls for supporting the cylindrical cargo items; a frame structure supporting the chute from below and comprising a plurality of transverse supports arranged at a distance from each other in the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit, the frame structure further comprising an inclined support extending from the first end of the cargo transport unit to the second end of the cargo transport unit; and a bottom structure comprising longitudinal edge profiles extending in the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit and positioned opposite each other.
  • a cargo transport unit of this type is known for instance from Finnish patent publication FI 120232 B , European patent publication EP 2397365 B1 , Interntional patent publication WO 2010/142854 A1 and Finnish patent publication FI 121372 B . It is time-consuming and difficult to manufacture these known cargo support units.
  • An object of the invention is to provide a container-like cargo transport unit the frame structure of which, in particular, can be easily manufactured to be extremely strong, so that the cargo transport unit can be loaded with heavy cargo.
  • the cargo transport unit according to the invention is characterized in that an upper edge of the transverse supports comprises an inclined portion which extends from the longitudinal edge profiles of the bottom structure of the cargo transport unit to the lower surface on the other side of the support surface of the chute support walls, to the mid-section of the support walls, and in that the inclined support of the frame structure of the cargo transport unit is formed of a continuous plate which is fastened by a weld joint to the inclined portions of the upper edges of the transverse supports.
  • the inclined support is a substantially planar piece comprising a planar portion which is at an angle of 30 to 60 degrees relative to the horizontal plane, and an edged lower end comprising a vertical wall which is joined, by means of a first bend in the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit, to the lower end of the planar portion of the inclined support, and a horizontal portion which is joined, by means of a second bend in the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit, to the lower end of the vertical wall, which vertical wall and the horizontal portion form a longitudinal edge profile of the bottom structure of the cargo transport unit, whereby the edge profile forms one piece together with the planar portion of the inclined support. Edging the planar plate twice thus provides the edge profile.
  • one piece means here that said components have not been provided by welding or by joining several parts together in another way but the components (in this case the inclined support on one hand and the edge profile on the other) have been formed by forming or working them out of the same work piece, whereby there are no joint or seam points in the components.
  • the frame structure comprises triangular supports arranged at the point of the transverse supports, seen in the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit, a first end of the triangular supports being welded onto the inclined support and a second end being welded to the lower surface of the inclined upper part of the chute.
  • the triangular pieces support the upper parts of the support walls in the chute and stiffen the cargo transport unit.
  • One of the greatest advantages of the cargo transport unit according to the invention is that the frame structure of the unit can be manufactured easily.
  • Figure 1 shows a side view of a cargo transport unit in the form of a container according to the invention.
  • the container comprises a frame structure denoted generally by reference numeral 1; opposite sides, of which Figure 1 shows a first side 2 and Figure 11 illustrates with reference numeral 3 the position of a second side opposite the first side (although the side 3 is not drawn in Figure 11 ).
  • the sides 2, 3 of the container in Figure 1 are side walls of the container.
  • the container comprises a first end 4 and a second end 5 positioned opposite the first end.
  • a roof structure 6 in the container is openable in order for the container to be loaded from above by a crane.
  • the roof structure 6 may comprise an openable protective cover, a liftable roof or roof boards movable onto each other to form a loading opening in the roof.
  • the container preferably further comprises a loading door (not shown) arranged at the second end 5.
  • FIG 2 shows a bottom structure 10 of the container.
  • the bottom structure comprises a frame structure 1 provided with a plurality of transverse supports 7.
  • the transverse supports 7 are at a distance from each other in the longitudinal direction of the container.
  • the number of transverse supports 7 is typically three to seven, depending on the length of the container.
  • reference numeral 8 indicates generally a chute extending from the end 4 to the end 5 of the container and supported by the frame structure 1 to support coils or other cylindrical cargo items (in Figure 11 a coil representing cylindrical cargo items 15 is denoted by a broken line).
  • Inclined support walls (8a, 8b in Figure 11 ) of the chute 8 form support surfaces for supporting cylindrical cargo items.
  • the transverse supports 7 support the chute 8 from below.
  • the chute 8 is also supported from below by inclined supports 9 extending from one end of the container to the other and being substantially planar pieces.
  • the inclined supports 9 are preferably at an angle of 30 to 60 degrees relative to the horizontal plane.
  • the inclined supports 9 extend from opposite longitudinal edge profiles 25, 26, which may be called lower profiles, in the bottom structure of the container to the lower surfaces on the other side of the support surfaces of the support walls 8a, 8b in the chute 8, to the mid-section of the support walls. Said angle is denoted by ⁇ in Figures 5 and 8 .
  • the chute 8 and more precisely the inclined upper parts 8au and 8bu of the support walls 8a, 8b in the chute 8 are supported from below by triangular supports 11 arranged at the point of the transverse supports 7 (and shown in Figures 6a and 6b from two different directions).
  • the triangular supports 11 are transverse supports for the chute 8, whereby it can be said that the transverse supports of the chute comprise both the triangular supports 11 and the transverse supports 7.
  • the upper part 8au of the chute 8 is supported from below by a number of transverse supports 41, which are at a distance from each other.
  • reference numeral 12 shows fastening points which are formed in the upper parts of the chute 8 and to which a flexible, elongated cargo-fastening member (not shown), such as a belt, rope or cord, supporting the cargo (cylindrical cargo items) from above can be fastened.
  • a flexible, elongated cargo-fastening member such as a belt, rope or cord, supporting the cargo (cylindrical cargo items) from above can be fastened.
  • Figures 4a, 4b, 5, 6a, 6b, 7 and 8 illustrate manufacturing of the container frame structure.
  • FIG 4a illustrates the transverse support 7 of the container obliquely from above.
  • the transverse support 7 is formed of a piece of plate by cutting and edging. Cutting has provided the upper edge of the transverse support 7 with portions supporting a bottom part 8c of the chute 8 and lower parts 8al and 8bl of the chute 8 (see Figure 12 ) and, in addition, with an inclined portion 31 which is at an angle ⁇ and to which the inclined support 9 is fastened by welding.
  • Figure 4b shows the transverse support 7 of Figure 4a , seen in the direction of arrow A, i.e. from the side. It is seen in Figures 4a, 4b that the transverse support 7 comprises a horizontal lower part 7b. The lower part 7b is provided by edging. Owing to edging 32, great rigidity has been achieved for the transverse support 7.
  • the inclined support 9 placed upon the transverse supports 7 is formed of one continuous plate. Since it is a continuous and seamless planar plate, the plate formed by the inclined support 9 is firm and easy to manufacture. It is also rather easy to weld the inclined portion of the transverse support 7 to the lower surface of the inclined support 9.
  • the weld joint is denoted with reference numeral 30 in Figure 2 .
  • reference numeral 13 shows profiles which are intended for a forklift (not shown) and with which the container can be lifted.
  • the inclined supports 9 are at least substantially planar and at an angle ⁇ about 40 degrees relative to the horizontal plane. The angle ⁇ may preferably be in the range of 30 to 60 degrees.
  • the horizontal portion 9d is directed outwards in the structure of Figure 5 , i.e. away from the longitudinal central axis of the cargo transport unit. Alternatively, the horizontal portion 9d may be directed towards the longitudinal central axis of the cargo transport unit.
  • the vertical wall 9c and the horizontal portion 9d form the longitudinal edge profile 25 of a bottom structure 10 in the cargo transport unit.
  • the planar portion 9a is preferably straight, as shown in the embodiment of the figures.
  • a straight planar portion means that the planar portion is not curved.
  • the longitudinal edge profiles 25, 26 of the cargo transport unit may be made of a profile piece (not shown) which is welded to the lower end 9al of the planar portion 9a of the inclined support, whereby the edge profiles 25, 26 do not form one (seamless) piece together with the planar portion 9a of the inclined support 9.
  • FIG 6a shows in detail the triangular support 11 shown in Figures 2 and 3 , for example.
  • a first side 11a of the triangular support 11 is welded onto the inclined support 9, and a second side 11b of the triangular supports is welded to the lower surface of the inclined upper part 8au, 8bu of the chute 8, see Figures 2 , 6a and 12 .
  • a third side 11c of the triangular supports 11 is delimited by two edgings 33 and 34, whereby great rigidity is achieved for the triangular support 11.
  • the height of the side 11c of the triangular supports 11 may vary. Accordingly, the triangular supports 11 do not have to extend as far as to the edge profiles 25, 26 but the lower end of the triangular supports 11 may become positioned in the inclined lower part 8al of the support wall 8a in the chute 8.
  • Figure 7 shows a profile piece 22 positioned in the bottom part 8c of the chute and comprising a horizontal portion 22a and inclined portions 22b, 22c directed obliquely upwards and outwards in different directions from it.
  • the inclined portions 22b, 22c are formed in one piece together with the horizontal portion 22a by bending plate material. Bends are indicated by reference numerals 35 and 36.
  • the inclined portions 22b, 22c are welded to the inclined lower parts 8al and 8bl of the support walls 8a, 8b, respectively, in the chute 8. More precisely, the upper edges of the inclined portions 22b, 22c are welded with butt weld to the lower edges of the lower parts 8al, 8bl of the support walls in the chute 8.
  • reference numeral 23 indicates said butt weld. It is feasible for the bottom part 8c of the chute to be joined to the lower parts 8al, 8bl of the chute by a bend, in which case there is no weld 23.
  • the lower parts 8al, 8bl of the support walls 8a, 8b in the chute 8 form one piece together with the upper parts 8au and 8bu of the support walls in the chute.
  • Figure 8 shows the frame structure of the container in more detail than Figure 5 .
  • the end of the container has been left open to show the frame structure better than in Figure 3 .
  • Figure 8 shows longitudinal supports 21 supporting the chute 8 from below. The supports 21 are welded to the lower surfaces of the inclined lower parts 8al, 8bl of the chute 8.
  • a broken line indicates a transverse support member 14 for supporting a coil (cf. coil 15 indicated by broken line in Figure 11 ) in the longitudinal direction of the container during transport.
  • reference numeral 16 denotes a profile piece arranged above the chute 8 to receive the end of the support member 14.
  • the profile piece 16 is provided with a rail 17 comprising several fastening means 18 for receiving fastening members 19 at the ends of the support member 14.
  • the support member 14 is detachably locked to the profile piece 16 (via the rail 17), whereby the support member 14 is prevented from moving in the longitudinal direction of the profile piece 16 and the container.
  • the support member 14 can be detachably locked to the profile piece 16 without a rail 17 fastened to the profile piece 16 being used for the locking, in which case the locking is arranged in another manner, for instance to fastening means which are made directly in the profile piece and which might be holes, for instance.
  • the support member 14 With the fastening member 19 and fastening means 18, the support member 14 can be locked at a desired point in the longitudinal direction of the container.
  • the fastening member 19 is detached from the fastening means, the support member 14 can be moved to a desired point in the longitudinal direction of the container.
  • the fastening member 19 may preferably be a pin, in which case the fastening means 19 may preferably be formed of a number of recesses which are made in the rail 17 and which may comprise bottoms or which may be bottomless, in which case they are holes.
  • the container is suitable for transporting both cylindrical cargo items and other cargo items.
  • the cargo transport unit comprises rails which are positioned on the side walls of the cargo transport unit and to which the transverse support members are locked.
  • the rails 17 and the chute 8 must be made extremely firm in order for them to withstand the loading that is caused by the cargo and that may be even more than 100 t when the cargo consists of heavy steel coils.
  • a heavily loaded cargo transport unit is, during operation, subjected to longitudinal acceleration forces, for example in connection with a collision (if the cargo transport unit is transported by land), the rails and the fastening points of the rails are correspondingly subjected to great acceleration forces.
  • reference numeral 20 indicates transverse strengthening pieces welded onto the inclined support 9, above the lift profiles 13. Owing to the strengthening pieces 20, good support is achieved for the lifting points of the lift profiles 13 when the container is lifted, whereby loadings subjected locally (at the lifting point) to the inclined supports 9 are reduced.
  • Figure 9 shows a chute a container without a roof structure (cf. roof structure in Figure 1 ) from above, while Figures 10 and 11 show a side view and an end view of the container of Figure 9 .
  • Figure 12 illustrates a section along line XII - XII of Figure 10 .
  • Figure 13 illustrates a section along line XIII - XIII of Figure 10 .
  • the rails 16 are, in their entirety, positioned farther from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container than the closest distance L2 of the vertical side walls arranged on the container sides 2, 3 from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container, whereby the closest distance L1 of an edge 24 of the rails 16 closest to the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container is substantially longer than the closest distance L2 of the vertical side walls of the container, which are positioned above the rails, from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container.
  • the rails 16 may alternatively be (only) for the most part positioned farther from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container than the closest distance L2 of the side walls from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container, whereby the closest distance L1 of the edge 24 of the rails 16 closest to the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container is substantially the same as the closest distance L2 of the side walls of the container, which are positioned above the rails, from the longitudinal symmetry plane S - S of the container.
  • the profile piece 16 above the chute comprises a vertical wall 16a joined to the inclined upper part 8bu of the support wall of the chute via a bend 16c.
  • the profile piece 16 further comprises a horizontal portion 16b joined to the upper end of the vertical wall 16a of the profile piece via a bend 16d. Said bends 16c and 16d are also denoted in Figure 10 . Edging a planar plate twice provides a profile piece 16 above the chute 8 and, at the same time, an inclined upper part 8bu of the inclined support wall 8b in the chute.
  • Two profile pieces 16 and a complete chute 8 comprising inclined upper parts 8au, 8bu and inclined lower parts 8al, 8bl as well as a bottom part of the chute are provided by edging two large, planar plates twice (to provide the profile pieces 16 of the chute and the inclined upper parts 8au, 8bu of the chute) and by edging a planar, narrow plate twice (to provide the profile piece 22 in the bottom part of the chute), after which the bottom part of the chute (more precisely the inclined portions 22b and 22c of the profile piece 22 forming the bottom part) is joined by only two welds in the longitudinal direction of the cargo transport unit to the inclined lower parts 8al, 8bl of the inclined support walls 8a, 8b of the chute.
  • the profile piece 16 and those parts of the chute 8 that may be subjected to extremely great forces during operation can be manufactured easily.
  • the vertical wall of the profile piece 16 may be joined via more than one bend (cf. bend 16a in Figure 14 ) to the inclined upper part of the chute (cf. inclined upper part 8ba in Figure 14 ).
  • the cargo transport unit does not have to be a container; it may be without a roof structure or even without actual side walls, in which case it may be called a cargo transport cassette.
  • the cargo transport unit does not have to be of the type comprising profile pieces arranged above the chute.
