Der zentrale Verdichter wird in vorteilhafter Weise wieder außerhalb des Produktionsraumes vorgesehen. Dabei kann auch ein maschinenbezogenes Regelsystem vorgesehen sein. Dadurch lassen sich die vom Verdichter zu verdichtenden Luftströme aus den Vakuumkammern jeder Zigarettenherstellungsmaschine individuell regeln, so dass der zentrale Verdichter immer am optimalen Arbeitspunkt mit maximalem Wirkungsgrad gefahren werden kann. Dadurch wird der Energiebedarf zur Vakuumerzeugung nochmals reduziert.
