    b) the rear, second clearing chain (11) - with regard to the working direction (9) - is inserted into the track gap (17), and ballast (2) is picked up in order to form a trench (18),
    c) subsequently the machine (1) is moved backwards while the second clearing chain (11) is lifted, the first clearing chain (10) is inserted into the trench (18) to pick up ballast (2) of a first ballast layer (20), and the machine (1) is moved in the working direction (9),
    d) with lifting of the front track end (16), the second clearing chain (11) is lowered underneath the track (5) and placed into operation for picking up ballast (2) of a second ballast layer (21).
