  • WO 01/37319 and EP 1632 985 Al disclosed.
  • the high-pressure discharge lamp according to the invention has a discharge vessel sealed on two sides, an ionizable filling enclosed in the discharge space of the discharge vessel and electrodes for generating a gas discharge extending into the discharge space, wherein the discharge vessel has an electrically conductive coating which is designed as a starting aid and at least in the border region between the discharge space Discharge space and a first sealed end of the discharge vessel is arranged.
  • This coating forms with that of the first sealed end protruding and projecting into the discharge space first electrode of the high-pressure discharge lamp, a capacitor, wherein the intermediate quartz glass of the discharge vessel and the filling gas in the discharge space form the dielectric of this capacitor.
  • a dielectrically impeded discharge is generated in the discharge space between the first electrode and the coating.
  • This dielectrically impeded discharge generates a sufficient number of free charge carriers in the discharge space in order to enable the electrical breakdown between the two electrodes of the high-pressure discharge lamp or to significantly reduce the ignition voltage required for this purpose.
  • the Eifindung is therefore particularly well suited for mercury-free metal halide high-pressure discharge lamps, which have an increased ignition voltage due to the lack of mercury.
  • the coating designed as an ignition aid is additionally also arranged in the boundary region between the discharge space and the second sealed end of the discharge vessel.
  • the average breakdown voltage of the discharge path in the high-pressure discharge lamp is shown.
  • the evaluation according to FIG. 4 For each of the five coating geometries, a plurality of high-pressure discharge lamps were used, over which an average value for the breakdown voltage was formed.
  • the average breakdown voltage for high-pressure discharge lamps without Zündosbe slaughterung (bar 1 in Figure 4) is about 28.1 kV

  • the bar 6 of FIG. 4 is the average breakdown voltage for high-pressure discharge lamps with the aforementioned symmetrical Zündangesbe harshung, which is arranged on the two aforementioned boundary regions, the surfaces of both sealed ends and a surface portion of the discharge space enclosing part of the discharge vessel, about 20 kV.
  • the abovementioned first sealed end of the discharge vessel is that end whose current supply and electrode are charged with the high-voltage pulses required to ignite the gas discharge in the high-pressure discharge lamp. Thereby, the above-mentioned dielectrically impeded discharge is generated between the electrode or power supply protruding from the first sealed end and the ignition assist coating.
  • the invention is advantageously applicable to high-pressure discharge lamps which are provided for operation in a horizontal position, with electrodes arranged in a horizontal plane, as for example in the case of metal halide high-pressure discharge lamps for vehicle headlights.
  • the one with the Zündinsbe slaughterung provided surface portion of the discharge space enclosing part of the discharge vessel disposed below the electrodes.
  • the coating reflects back a part of the infrared radiation generated by the discharge into the discharge space and thus ensures selective heating of the colder areas of the discharge vessel lying beneath the electrodes, in which areas the metal halides used for generating light are collected.
  • the efficiency of the lamp can be increased without also heating the hot regions of the discharge vessel lying above the electrodes.
  • the application of the coating only on the colder underside of the discharge vessel reduces the thermal load of the coating, so that correspondingly lower demands can be placed on the thermal resistance of the coating materials.
