Abstract

Bei einem Verfahren zur Herstellung mikro- oder nanopartikelverstärkter Metalle wird in die Metallschmelze eine Mischung eingebracht, die aus in der Metallschmelze löslichen Partikeln und Verstärkungspartikeln und/oder Partikeln besteht, die in der Metallschmelze Verstärkungspartikel bilden.

Description

  • Die Erfindung bezieht sich auf ein Verfahren zur Herstellung partikelverstärkter Metalle nach dem Oberbegriff des Anspruchs 1.
  • Ein derartiges Verfahren ist bereits bekannt. Danach werden nanoskalige keramische Verstärkungspartikel in eine geschmolzene Aluminiumlegierung eingebracht und mit einem Rührer in der Schmelze verteilt.
  • Neben einer Separation der Partikel von der Schmelze aufgrund von Dichteunterschieden werden in den partikelverstärkten Metallen häufig Agglomerate, d.h. eine Zusammenballung von Partikeln, beobachtet. Die Ursache für das Auftreten von Partikelagglomeraten sind zum einen, insbesondere bei Nanopartikeln, die hohen Grenzflächenkräfte, die dazu führen, dass die Partikel bereits vor der Verarbeitung als Agglomerate vorliegen. Zum anderen reicht die geringe Energie, die durch die Mischvorgänge in der Schmelze auf die Agglomerate einwirkt, meist nicht aus, um die Agglomerate während des Prozesses zu vereinzeln. Daneben verhindert die schlechte Benetzung der keramischen Partikel mit der Metallschmelze ein wirksames Aufbrechen der Agglomerate.
  • Die Festigkeitssteigerung von Gussteilen durch das Einbringen von Nanopartikeln besitzt ein sehr hohes Potential zur Steigerung der Raumtemperaturfestigkeit, der Hochtemperaturfestigkeit und der Kriechbeständigkeit. Dabei wird die Duktilität durch Nanopartikel weit weniger herabgesetzt als durch Mikropartikel oder Verstärkungsfasern.
  • Um die Mechanismen der Härtung von Metallen mit Nanopartikeln effektiv nutzen zu können, ist eine möglichst homogene Verteilung der Nanopartikel in der Metallmatrix anzustreben. In der Praxis ist die Zielsetzung, Nanopartikel mit einer Teilchengröße von wenigen Nanometern so fein in dem gegossenen Bauteil zu verteilen, dass zwischen den Partikeln der ideale freie Passierabstand für Versetzungen vorliegt, der unter anderem von der jeweiligen Legierung abhängt, jedoch im Allgemeinen zwischen 20 nm und 200 nm beträgt. Durch die Verstärkungspartikel wird nämlich das bei von außen angelegten Spannungen auftretende Wandern von Versetzungen im Metall erschwert und damit der Widerstand gegenüber plastischer Verformung des Bauteils erhöht. Ein zu hoher Anteil der Verstärkungspartikel führt allerdings zu einem spröden Werkstoff.
  • Für eine wirksame Dispersionshärtung in gießtechnisch hergestellten nanopartikelverstärkten Verbundwerkstoffen müssen die Agglomerate somit in ihre Einzelteilchen vereinzelt werden.
  • Auch bei mikropartikelverstärkten Metallen wirkt sich eine homogene Verteilung der Partikel in dem Metall positiv auf die Werkstoffeigenschaften aus. Insbesondere die Duktilität, das Kriechverhalten und die Verschleißeigenschaften werden durch eine homogene Werkstoffstruktur positiv beeinflusst.
  • Aufgabe der Erfindung ist es daher, eine möglichst homogene Verteilung von nano- oder mikroskaligen Verstärkungspartikeln in der Metallschmelze zu erreichen.
  • Dies wird erfindungsgemäß durch das im Anspruch 1 gekennzeichnete Verfahren erreicht. In den Unteransprüchen sind vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen der Erfindung wiedergegeben.
  • Nach der Erfindung wird zunächst eine Mischung aus den Verstärkungspartikeln und Partikeln hergestellt, die in der Metallschmelze löslich sind. Diese Mischung wird dann in die Metallschmelze eingebracht. In der Metallschmelze werden die löslichen Partikel gelöst, wodurch die Verstärkungspartikel vereinzelt werden. Bei einem Agglomerat aus Verstärkungspartikeln und löslichen Partikeln in der Mischung bilden die löslichen Partikel gewissermaßen Platzhalter, die durch Lösen in der Schmelze verschwinden, wodurch die vereinzelten Verstärkungspartikel zurückbleiben.
  • Bei Kontakt eines derartigen Agglomerats mit der Metallschmelze besteht also eine hohe Triebkraft zur selektiven Reaktion der Metallschmelze mit den löslichen Partikeln. Beim Lösen der löslichen Partikel in der Schmelze werden die Agglomerate auf einer Mikro- bzw. Nanoskala aufgebrochen und die mikroskaligen bzw. nanoskaligen Verstärkungspartikel vereinzelt. Der Hauptteil der Energie zur Vereinzelung der Partikel stammt somit nicht aus der von außen zugeführten mechanischen Energie beim Mischen der Teilchen in der Metallschmelze, vielmehr wird der Schmelze die Lösungsenthalpie entzogen.
  • Wenn sich die löslichen Partikel auflösen, kann dies auch auf eine chemische Reaktion zurückzuführen sein. So können beispielsweise bei einer geschmolzenen Magnesiumlegierung Siliziumdioxid-Partikel als lösliche Partikel verwendet werden. Das Siliziumdioxid kann dann mit den Metallkomponenten der Legierung reagieren, beispielsweise zu Metalloxiden und Metallsiliziden. Die Energie zur Vereinzelung der Partikel kann also auch aus der chemischen Energie von Reaktionen stammen, die in der Metallschmelze stattfinden.
  • Die Verstärkungspartikeln können auch in situ hergestellt werden, beispielsweise aus Partikeln, die in der Schmelze oxidiert werden und dadurch Verstärkungspartikel aus einem hochschmelzenden Oxid bilden. D.h., erfindungsgemäß kann in die Metallschmelze auch eine Mischung eingebracht werden, die aus in der Metallschmelze löslichen Partikeln sowie Partikeln besteht, die in der Metallschmelze Verstärkungspartikel bilden.
  • Die vereinzelten Verstärkungspartikel werden in der Schmelze mechanisch homogen verteilt. Dazu kann ein Rührer, ein Extruder oder eine andere Mischeinrichtung verwendet werden.
  • Die mechanische Energie, die in die Schmelze zur Vereinzelung der Agglomerate aufgebracht werden muss, ist erfindungsgemäß gering.
  • Vorzugsweise werden sowohl als Verstärkungspartikel wie als lösliche Partikel mikroskalige Partikel, also Partikel mit einer mittleren Teilchengröße von 1 µm bis 1.000 µm, oder nanoskalige Partikel, also Partikel mit einer mittleren Teilchengröße von 1 nm bis 1 µm verwendet, vorzugsweise 100 nm bis weniger als 1 µm.
  • Die mittlere Teilchengröße der löslichen Partikel und der Verstärkungspartikel liegt vorzugsweise in der gleichen Größenordnung. So kann das Verhältnis der mittleren Teilchengröße der löslichen Partikel zu der mittleren Teilchengröße der Verstärkungspartikel beispielweise zwischen 10:1 und 1:10 betragen. Wenn der Anteil der löslichen Partikel zu gering ist, ist der Zerfall der Agglomerate in einzelne Verstärkungspartikel unzureichend, bei einem zu hohen Anteil löslicher Partikel kann eine unerwünschte Änderung der Eigenschaften des Metalls auftreten. Durch Mischungen mit einem hohen Anteil an löslichen Partikeln kann die Dosierung geringer Mengen von Verstärkungspartikeln erleichtert werden.
  • Der Volumenanteil der Verstärkungspartikel in dem Metall beträgt bei nanoskaligen Verstärkungspartikeln vorzugsweise 0,1 % bis 10 %, insbesondere 1 % bis 10 %, bei mikroskaligen Partikeln 2 % bis 30 %, insbesondere 5 % bis 20 %.
  • Während sich die löslichen Partikel auflösen, sind die Verstärkungspartikel in der Schmelze vorzugsweise unlöslich. Es können aber auch teilweise lösliche Verstärkungspartikel verwendet werden, jedoch soll ihre Löslichkeit in der Schmelze nicht mehr als 50 Vol.-% betragen.
  • Die Verstärkungspartikel können sich also in der Metallschmelze inert verhalten. Wenn sie sich teilweise lösen, kann dies auf eine chemische Reaktion an der Grenzfläche zurückzuführen sein. In diesem Fall muss die Kinetik der Reaktion derart gestaltet sein, dass mögliche Reaktionen mit den Verstärkungspartikeln deutlich langsamer ablaufen als mit den löslichen Partikeln.
  • Als Verstärkungspartikel werden insbesondere Keramikpartikel verwendet, beispielsweise Carbide, wie Siliziumcarbid (SiC) oder Metalloxide, wie Aluminiumoxid, sowie Gemische dieser Verbindungen. Die löslichen Partikel können aus Metallen oder Keramik bestehen. Für Magnesiumlegierungen eignet sich beispielsweise Siliziumdioxid.
  • Häufig entstehen Mischungen aus in der Metallschmelze löslichen Partikeln und Verstärkungspartikeln und/oder Partikeln, die in der Metallschmelze Verstärkungspartikel bilden, als Nebenprodukt bei anderen Verarbeitungsprozessen, beispielsweise beim Flammspritzen. Derartige Mischungen können erfindungsgemäß besonders wirtschaftlich eingesetzt werden. So entsteht beim Flammspritzen häufig ein Partikelgemisch aus Aluminium-, Aluminiumoxid- und Siliciumdioxid-Partikeln, das erfindungsgemäß eingesetzt werden kann.
  • Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist insbesondere zur Herstellung partikelverstärkter Leichtmetalle geeignet, insbesondere zur Herstellung von gegossenen Bauteilen aus Aluminium- oder Magnesiumlegierungen. Derartige gegossene Bauteile können als Motorkomponente, beispielsweise Kurbelgehäuse oder Motortragblock, als Fahrwerksteile aber auch beispielsweise als Instrumententafelträger verwendet werden.
  • Beispiel
  • Eine Schmelze aus einer MgAl6Sr2-Legierung wird mit einer Mischung aus Al2O3-Partikeln und SiO2-Partikeln in einem Volumenverhältnis von 1:5 versetzt, die in der Schmelze gleichmäßig durch Rühren verteilt wird. Die Teilchengröße beider Partikel beträgt 20 nm bis 50 nm. Die Menge des Gemisches beträgt 10 Gew.-%, bezogen auf die Schmelze.

Claims (7)

  1. Verfahren zur Herstellung partikelverstärkter Metalle, bei dem mikro- oder nanoskalige Verstärkungspartikel in die Metallschmelze eingebracht und in ihr mechanisch verteilt werden, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass in die Metallschmelze eine Mischung eingebracht wird, die aus in der Metallschmelze löslichen Partikeln und Verstärkungspartikeln und/oder Partikeln besteht, die in der Metallschmelze Verstärkungspartikel bilden.
  2. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass als lösliche Partikel gleichfalls mikroskalige Partikel mit einer Teilchengröße von 1 µm bis 1000 µm oder nanoskalige Partikel mit einer Teilchengröße von 1 nm bis 1000 nm verwendet werden.
  3. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1 oder 2, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Volumenverhältnis der Verstärkungspartikel zu den löslichen Partikeln in der Mischung 1:100 bis 20:1 beträgt.
  4. Verfahren nach einem der vorstehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass der Volumenanteil der Verstärkungspartikel in dem Metall 0,1 % bis 10 % bei nanoskaligen Partikeln und 2 % bis 30 % bei mikroskaligen Partikeln beträgt.
  5. Verfahren nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass das Metall eine Aluminium- oder Magnesiumlegierung ist.
  6. Verfahren nach einem der vorstehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass als Verstärkungspartikel Keramikpartikel verwendet werden.
  7. Verfahren nach einem der vorstehenden Ansprüche, dadurch gekennzeichnet, dass als lösliche Partikel Partikel verwendet werden, die in der Metallschmelze vollständig löslich sind oder mit Komponenten der Metallschmelze Verbindungen bilden.
