- the disk has a clamping area which can be engaged by the spindle 2 of the motor 1 in order to be driven.
- a tray 4 For supporting the disk when the spindle 2 is not in engagement with the disk, there is provided a tray 4 having an opening 5 allowing the passage of the spindle 2 and of the optical signals of the optical system 3.
- the tray 4 is of the drawer type, that is the tray 4 is slidable between an open position outside a housing of the device allowing loading and unloading of a disk, and a closed position in which the disk is positioned with its hub substantially in alignment with the spindle 2.
- a loader mechanism In order to bring the spindle 2 in engagement with the hub of the disk, there is provided a loader mechanism causing a relative movement between the spindle 2 and the tray 4, mainly in a direction perpendicular to the plane of the tray 4 and disk supported thereon.
- the disk drive i.e. motor 1, spindle 2 and optical system 3 with respect to the tray 4.
- the disk drive 1-3 it is movably arranged on a frame or sub-chassis 6 within a chassis 6A.
- the disk drive 1-3 is pivotable around an axis 7 which is parallel to the plane of the tray 4. This pivoting axis 7 is provided on one side of the sub-chassis 6, and on the opposite side of the sub-chassis 6 there is provided an adjustment mechanism 8 causing the engagement/disengagement movements of the disk drive 1-3.
- Figs. 1 - 4 show parts of the adjustment mechanism 8.
- This adjustment mechanism 8 comprises a rack or control slide 9 which is motor driven such that the control slide 9 is slidable in a direction substantially parallel to the axis 7 and substantially perpendicular to the direction of movement of the sub-chassis 6 to and from the tray 4.
- Fig. 5 shows a simplified embodiment of the adjustment mechanism 8 to illustrate the principle of the present invention.
- the control slide 9 includes two sets (sets 10, 11) of curves 12, 13.
- the curves 12, 13 are configured as a slot formed in the control slide 9, but other embodiments are conceivable, for example in a form of cams or ribs.
- the sub-chassis 6 of the disk drive 1-3 includes a bracket 14 comprising two sets (sets 15, 16) of pins 17, 18, each cooperating with one of said curves 12, 13 of a corresponding set 10, 11.
- each pin 17, 18 engages in the corresponding curve 12, 13.
- the curve 12 is open on one end 19, whereas the other curve 13 is open at an opposite end 20 as seen in the direction of movement of the disk drive 1-3 to and from the tray 4.
- Both curves 12, 13 have similar shapes with parallel end parts 21, 22 and an inclined intermediate part 23.
- the end parts extend perpendicularly to the direction of movement of the disk drive to and from the tray 4, whereas the intermediate part 23 is inclined both with respect to the direction of movement of the disk drive to and from the tray and with respect to the direction of movement of the control slide 9.
- the disk drive 1-3 is locked in its engaged/disengaged position, while the disk drive 1-3 is adjusted when the pins 17, 18 run through the intermediate part 23 of the curves 12, 13 as the control slide 9 is moved.
- the curves 12, 13 in the sets 10, 11 are offset with respect to each other, both in the sliding direction of the control slide 9 and in the direction of movement of the disk drive 1-3.
- This offset may be equal to the offset of the pins 17, 18 in the same directions, but may also differ as is the case shown where the offset is equal only in the sliding direction.
- the pins 17, 18 are offset a little more than the curves 12, 13.
- each pin 17, 18 is operative only during a part of the stroke of the control slide. If a pin 17, 18 is inoperative, it may leave the curve 12, 13 through its open end 19 or 20.
- this adjustment mechanism 8 it is possible to obtain particular stroke of the disk drive 1-3 with a reduced height of the control slide 9.
- Figs. 5 and 6 show the difference between the invention and the prior art.
- the invention provides a loader mechanism, disk drive unit and device which causes a disk engagement/disengagement movement by means of an adjustment mechanism having a reduced height. It is noted that in specification and claims, the use of the expressions "a” or “an” does not exclude a plurality thereof, whereas the expression “comprising” does no exclude additional elements or steps. Any reference signs in the claims shall not be construed as limiting the scope thereof. A single processor or unit may fulfil the functions of several elements in the appended claims. In the presently preferred embodiments, the disk is an optical data disk. However, it should be understood that the invention can also be used for all kinds of other disks e.g.
- the curves in each set may have different shapes, depending on the required movement of the disk drive and take-over of the pin operation.
- a curve adjacent to an end of the control part may also be open towards this end such that a cooperating pin may leave the respective curve at this end as soon as the other pin-curve engagement in the set has taken over the control.
- the curve will be open at its inclined portion and may have a "parallel" portion on one end only.
