Definitions
- the present invention has as its object a system for automatically switching webs in the manufacture of corrugated board, said system allowing to in a flexible and versatile manner and with no interruptions switch webs in the production of single- or multi-fluted corrugated board.
- the basic corrugated board manufacturing process is based on the corrugation of a paper medium web thus creating what is known as a fluted medium or fluting.
- This fluted medium is thereupon adhered to two paper medium webs at both tips of the fluted medium profile.
- This gluing of the paper medium webs creates a band of three paper medium webs having a thickness being equivalent to the flute profile having been used with the medium having been put through the corrugation process.
- the basic corrugated board does hence consist of three paper medium webs whose number can be increased up to five, seven or nine as per the increase of the number of flutings, this latter being achieved by gluing the paper medium webs to each other.
- the corrugated board production line is called a corrugator and comprises a number of machines being installed in line and being fit to carry out several functions.
- Each flute profile or fluting has a different flute height, the corrugated board being manufactured hence having a different final thickness depending on each fluting and on the paper medium webs having been used.
- the corrugated board can be manufactured by using combinations of one only fluted wall, the board being in this case called single wall; of two fluted walls, the board being in this case called a double-double face or double wall; of three fluted walls, the board being in this case called triple wall; and even of four fluted walls, the board being in this case called quadruple wall.
- a single face web One corrugated medium being glued at only one of its faces to a flat medium thus forming a web of two media being glued together is what is called a single face web.
- This latter will thus be a single face web of the E, B, C, A, N, M, O, F, etc. flute type according to the flute profile being used for manufacturing a single face web.
- the term "fluted wall” or “single face web”, or rather “fluted wall/single face web”, will be indifferently used hereafter to indicate the medium web having to be cut off or threaded up by the system.
- the corrugator is at present a production line comprising several machines being installed in line.
- the different functions of these machines allow to have at the end of the production line the manufactured board in form of stacked slabs of different dimensions according to the type of board box to be later on manufactured.
- the wet end consists of the following machines:
- the dry end consists of:
- the stoppage of the corrugator does of course generate a downtime, and it does besides force the operator to get into the machine in order to thus proceed to thread up or cut off the single face web, with the consequent risk being implied by that because of the fact that he machine is not switched off.
- the corrugator could by mistake start running at any time, and there are high temperature areas that can cause serious burns to the operators.
- the lowering of the corrugator's speed does in its turn generate a lessening of the quality of the board being manufactured since the temperature regime in the production is thus considerably altered.
- the board waste being generated by the fluted wall changes till reaching the normal working speed is a substantial one.
- the system being the object of the present invention obviates the aforementioned drawbacks.
- Said system is exclusively used in the wet end of the corrugator in order to improve the productivity and enhance its operational safety.
- the system of the invention is to be installed between the double gluing unit and the drying table.
- the invention allows to carry out the change of any single face web combination of the corrugator at the production speed and with no need for the operator to enter the machine, and said changes can be carried out in an automatic manner or else manually under the control of the operator being in charge of the line.
- Said system is fit to cut off and splice any type of single face web regardless of its flute size.
- the system for automatically switching fluted walls in the manufacture of corrugated board which is the object of the present invention is essentially characterised in that between the double gluing unit and the drying table of the corrugator's wet end it comprises first automatic cutting off means for carrying out the cutting off of the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web and second automatic cutting off means for carrying out the cutting off of at least one inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web, first means for automatically splicing the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web and second means for automatically splicing at least one inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web, and control means for automatically carrying out the cutting off and splicing of the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web and/or of at least one of the inner/intermediary fluted walls/single face webs of the resulting multi-fluted corrugated board web, this latter being completed with the conventional lower face liner web, the aforementioned means thus allowing to carry out said changes in a
- the first automatic cutting off means for carrying out the cutting off of the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web do basically comprise a cut-off knife acting as a by way of guillotine spanning the width of the machine and acting on an anvil spanning the whole width of the machine, the first splicing means comprising compressed air means being provided for pushing the cut free end of the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web towards the apron of the upper conveyor of the downstream drying table in order to thus carry out the splicing with the adjacent inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web by means of the glue being applied on the fluting of said outer/upper fluted wall.
- the system of the invention comprises means for suspending said outer/upper fluted wall/single face web when this latter has been cut off while waiting for the splicing with the corresponding inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web to be carried out at the corresponding point in time.
- the second means for automatically cutting off at least one inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web do basically comprise a rotary cut-off knife spanning the width of the machine, the second splicing means comprising compressed air means being provided for pushing the cut free end of the inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web towards the space between the upper conveyor and the drum being provided for driving the conventional lower face liner web immediately upstream of the drying table, in order to thus carry out the splicing of said inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web with the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web by means of glue and in the manner having been described above, and with said lower face liner web by means of the glue being applied on said inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web, i.e. on the fluting being adjacent to said lower face liner web.
- the splicing means consist in a tube being arranged in a transversal arrangement in the machine, said tube being provided with drilled holes through which the compressed air jets are expelled in order to thus carry out the corresponding splicing operation.
- the control means of the invention consist in a control panel comprising indicators, buttons and selector switches, said controls namely being a power on indictor, an intermittent indicator light, a hand-operated control for manually cutting off the inner fluted wall/single face web, a hand-operated control for manually cutting off the upper fluted wall/single face web, an open/closed circuit indicator, a hand-operated control for manually splicing the upper fluted wall/single face web, a hand-operated control for manually splicing the inner fluted wall/single face web, a control for activating the automatic execution of the web switching operations, a selector switch for manual operation, a display for showing the present combination of fluted walls, a display for showing the next combination of fluted walls, a selector switch for interfacing with the control computer, a selector switch for interfacing with the inner fluted wall/single face web splicing unit, and a selector switch for interfacing with the upper fluted wall/single face web
- the system of the invention allows to switch fluted walls at will and in all manners of choice.
- the system is in a position to basically carry out two operations: the threading up of the fluted wall/single face web within the drying table, and the cutting off of the single face web.
- the system of the invention allows to keep the fluted wall in storage in the conventional storage means of the corrugator till again threading it up.
- the first means -1- for automatically cutting off the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web -CES- are inactive while said outer/upper fluted wall/single face web -CES- is continuous before being cut off and during the normal corrugated board web manufacturing process, this being what can be called a first stage, said outer/upper fluted wall/single face web being illustrated in solid and thick lines in Figs. 1 and 2 .
- the system of the invention comprises means -8- for suspending said outer/upper fluted wall/single face web -CES- when this latter has been cut off and is in the "hold" stage while waiting for the splicing with the inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web -CII- to be carried out at the corresponding point in time.
- the aforementioned compressed air means -3- being provided for pushing the cut free end -E- of the outer/upper fluted wall/single face web -CES- comprise a tube being arranged in a transversal arrangement in the machine (not shown in detail), said tube being provided with drilled holes through which the compressed air jets -CH- are expelled in order to carry out the splicing having been described above.
- the system of the invention comprises suspension means -11-, said inner/intermediary fluted wall/single face web having been illustrated in Fig. 2 in solid and thick lines as in Fig.
- Said compressed air means -4- making up the splicing means and being provided for pushing the cut free end -E'- of the fluted wall -CII- towards the machine in a fourth stage being illustrated in dash-and-dot lines consist in a tube being arranged in a transversal arrangement in the machine (not shown in detail), said tube being provided with drilled holes through which the compressed air jets -CH- are expelled in order to thus carry out the corresponding splicing operation.
