Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device electroluminescent, comprising a first electrode, a second electrode allowing a at least partial passage of light, at least one layer electroluminescence organic semiconductor charge injection, arranged between said two electrodes, a substrate support, as well as a electrically conductive electric power source connected in an electrically conductive manner to the electrodes.
- the invention also relates to a manufacturing method such a device.
- SCALE Symmetrically Configured Alternating Light Emitting Devices
- the substrate is a thermally insulating material. During a high density operation of power this substrate does not allow a release of heat appropriate, which can lead to disturbances in the device. In Moreover, in the case of glass, the substrate is fragile whereas in the case of PET it is flexible. None of these two substrates resist the static and dynamic mechanical stresses supported when using electroluminescent devices.
- phosphors are inorganic compounds that are separated from a rigid substrate conductor by a dielectric layer, possibly with resistance variable.
- Phosphors are usually encapsulated for example in a polymerizable resin. They are placed in an electric field alternative that sets in motion the electrons created within them by thermal agitation and the corresponding positive holes created in the valence band. These electrons produce excitations by collision, with subsequent production of light. It is therefore in this case that which is called an intrinsic electroluminescence (see for example WO-97/46053 and US-A-3,626,240).
- the present invention aims to develop a device electroluminescent organic semiconductor which avoids these problems, in a simple way.
- a device electroluminescence as described at the beginning in which the substrate supports, in successive layers, the first electrode, which is continuously or alternatively a negative electrode, said at least one an organic semiconductor layer electroluminescence by injection of charges, and the second electrode allowing a transition to less partial light, which is continuously or alternatively a positive electrode, and wherein the substrate consists of a metal or metal alloy.
- Such a substrate has a thermal conductivity sufficient to allow the evacuation of the heat released by the electroluminescent system, especially when it is operated at high power density.
- the metal alloy is a steel, for example mild steel or stainless steel.
- Steel offers the property of being at the rigid and easy to shape, which is advantageous for many applications of electroluminescent devices, such as illuminating panels and outdoor or indoor luminaries, decorative systems, fixed or programmable display systems.
- the device may include one or several successive layers of organic semiconductor EL.
- first surface and second surface of this or these layers is meant, in the case of a single layer of semiconductor, the two faces of it. In the case of several successive layers, these are the two external faces of this set of layers.
- a metal substrate metal alloy or advantageously has the effect of allowing a reversal in the arrangement of the layers in the electroluminescent system with respect to that of the systems according to the state of the art. Indeed, the light emitted by the device no longer passes through the substrate, but only to through one of the electrodes, the one opposite the substrate, and through a possible external encapsulation of the latter in a transparent material, preferably waterproof and airtight.
- this electrode located opposite the substrate is implemented a material as transparent as possible.
- inorganic electrode materials as used in known electroluminescent or photovoltaic devices for electrodes directly supported by a glass or PET substrate can be envisaged.
- Non-exhaustive examples include indium tin oxide (ITO), indium zinc oxide (IZO) or systems based on indium oxides (zinc, gallium). ) or ZnO, SnO 2 , ZnS, CdS, ZnSe, Zn x Cd 1-x O, ZnTe.
- organic transparent electrically conductive materials for example p-doped conjugated polymers, polypyrrole, polythiophene, polyaniline, polyacetylene (CH x ) and derivatives or mixtures of these substances.
- organic transparent electrically conductive materials for example p-doped conjugated polymers, polypyrrole, polythiophene, polyaniline, polyacetylene (CH x ) and derivatives or mixtures of these substances.
- these superposed conductive layers can be used, for example an ITO layer coated with a conjugated polymer.
- silica As transparent encapsulation material, it is possible to provide for example a thin layer of silica deposited for example by the so-called PECVD technique (Physical Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition) (SiO x ).
- PECVD technique Physical Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition
- the substrate is connected to the power source.
- Steel is a good electronic conductor and so it can serve as a power supply for one of the electrodes with which it is in contact.
- the substrate can itself serve as an electrode.
- the substrate supports an electrode, which is directly connected to the power source, without passing through it by the substrate.
- an electrode material located on the substrate side it is possible to consider any appropriate material for this purpose. We can consider in particular the materials indicated above for the electrode located opposite the substrate. However, we can also consider, as electrode, the substrate in the form not only of the steel sheet itself, but more particularly in the form of this sheet having undergone a surface treatment.
- the steel sheet can be treated beforehand by a controlled oxidation so that, at least superficially, it has an enrichment in a good conductor, for example Fe 3 O 4 .
- This controlled oxidation can be designed in a known manner, for example by electrolysis or by air oxidation.
- a conductive coating in particular zinc, zinc weakly or strongly alloyed with aluminum, aluminum, chromium or tin.
- Such coatings can for example be obtained, according to the case, by electrolytic deposition or by hot dipping, according to techniques known to those skilled in the art.
- conductive polymer examples include polyacetylene, polyaniline, polypyrrole, polythiophene, their derivatives and their mixtures.
- the substrate is a steel treated so as to reflect a light emitted at from the organic electroluminescent semiconductor layer.
- Non-transparent steel as a substrate can be used to polished example, as well as its non-transparent coating. It is also possible that the electrode provided on the substrate side and the coating of possible surface of the substrate are also transparent. Such arrangement makes it possible to increase in a non negligible way the light emission efficiency of the system.
- an electrode material it will be possible to implement particular in this case a material as indicated above about materials to be used for the electrode opposite the substrate.
- the present invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a electroluminescent device, comprising an arrangement of at least one electroluminescence organic semiconductor layer by injection of charges between a first electrode and a second electrode allowing a at least partial passage of the light, a support of the device by a substrate, and an electrically conductive connection between the electrodes and a source of Electric power.
- this method comprises an arrangement of the first electrode on a substrate made of a metal or metal alloy, this first electrode being continuously or alternatively an electrode negative, a deposit of said at least one layer of semiconductor organic electroluminescence injection of charges on the first electrode, and a deposit of the second electrode allowing a transition to less partial light on said at least one layer of semiconductor organic this second electrode being continuously or alternatively a positive electrode, and possibly a deposit of a transparent material airtight and watertight on the second electrode, so as to encapsulate the device.
- Figures 1 to 3 are diagrammatic representations in section of devices according to the invention. It should be noted that the given dimensions are not not to scale. The relative dimensions between layers are also not respected.
- FIG. 1 shows an electroluminescent device powered by a DC power source 1.
- the substrate 2 is formed a sheet of steel, for example mild steel, which supports a layer thin 3 of an alloy of zinc and aluminum, serving as a negative electrode. This layer may for example be deposited on the steel by a method immersion in a hot bath.
- An organic semiconductor layer appropriate electroluminescent 4 is applied on the negative electrode 3 for example in the form of a solution which is then evaporated solvent at atmospheric pressure or under partial vacuum, or by evaporation-vacuum condensation of molecular weight oligomers low.
- a positive electrode 5 transparent, based for example on ITO, is advantageously deposited under vacuum on the organic semiconductor layer 4, for example according to the technique of reactive cathodic sputtering.
- a transparent encapsulation layer 6, for example silica applied in particular by a method of the type PECVD (Physical Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition), and on the face outer of the steel sheet 2 insulation, for example in the form a layer of electrically insulating paint 7.
- the at least one layer of organic semiconductor electroluminescent device according to the invention is a thin layer which can have a maximum thickness of a few micrometers.
- the current source 1 is directly connected to each of the electrodes 3 and 5. It could well be sure provide a connection from the current source 1 to the steel sheet 2, which would then serve as a supply of current to the electrode 3.
- FIG. 2 a device similar to that illustrated in FIG. Figure 1, but for use with power from a power source 8. This is connected, on the one hand, to the electrode layer ITO 5 base and, on the other hand, to the steel sheet 2 forming the substrate and simultaneously serving as the opposite electrode to the electrode 5. Both electrodes alternatively serve as positive electrode and electrode negative.
- the sheet is coated on the surface of an organic conductive layer 9, for example CH x (polyacetylene) which can be deposited on the sheet by reactive sputtering under vacuum.
- organic conductive layer 9 for example CH x (polyacetylene) which can be deposited on the sheet by reactive sputtering under vacuum.
- This layer is advantageously transparent and the surface of the sheet coated with this layer 9 has been previously treated to reflect the light emitted by the electroluminescent system, which improves the efficiency of the latter.
- the steel sheet soft serves as a substrate 2 for two electroluminescent devices identical on each of its faces.
- the faces of the substrate were activated at the surface by plasma under empty, then deposited on each of them, for example by evaporation or cathode sputtering under vacuum, an aluminum layer 12.
