Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a method for producing and repairing paintwork on objects, preferably vehicle bodies.
  • a base coat layer is produced on a substrate surface using a paint containing at least one effect substance
  • the basecoat is overcoated with a transparent lacquer
  • lacquers containing aluminum flakes are used as the lacquers containing effect substances for producing the base lacquer layer, then for example the widely used metallic effect lacquers are obtained.
  • Both the basecoat layer can be touched up with a transparent lacquer prior to overpainting, or the burned-in multi-layer lacquer coating with a lacquer containing at least one platelet-like pigment, in the latter case being overpainted again with a transparent lacquer and then baked again. It is very important that the repaired areas on the finished paintwork are not recognizable by differences in color and brightness.
  • at least the last spraying step for the production of the basecoat layer is carried out with the aid of a pneumatic application process in the case of automotive serial painting. These are usually so-called HVLP (high volume, low pressure) processes.
  • Pneumatic application methods are, however, disadvantageously characterized in that a relatively large part of the sprayed paint does not reach the substrate, with the result that the circulating air in the spray booth must have high speeds so that the relatively large amounts of overspray can be separated and disposed of .
  • EP 0 773 840 tries to avoid this problem by carrying out a very special painting process with precisely prescribed parameters. The process includes that the basecoat is applied electrostatically, and that the repair is carried out with the aid of pneumatic application under special conditions with regard to the droplet size and speed of the sprayed paint. Although this method can reduce the amount of overspray, it has been found that the touch-up is not sufficiently reproducible and there are undesirable color deviations between the base coat and the touched-up areas.
  • the present invention has set itself the task of avoiding the disadvantages of the prior art and to provide a method for producing and repairing coatings of objects which is simple and reproducible and in which no noticeable color deviations occur.
  • the process is said to be suitable for the production of multi-layer metallic effect coatings, with only small amounts of overspray being to be obtained.
  • This object is achieved by a process for touching up paintwork, in which new paint is applied to the damaged areas using a pneumatic spraying device, and which is characterized in that an electrical voltage is applied between the spraying device and the object to be touched up during the spraying process.
  • the electrical voltage causes an electrostatic attraction to pull the sprayed paint droplets toward the object to be painted.
  • the amount of overspray lost is therefore considerably smaller than without tension.
  • This influence of the application process on the color tone was surprising and may be due to the fact that the electrostatic field has an influence on the orientation of the metal particles in the effect lacquer.
  • the parameters of the electrostatic spray application according to the invention during the repair can essentially be selected as for the production of the basecoat.
  • the method according to the invention can be used in particular in the case of paint which contains effect metal particles, e.g. Aluminum plates included.
  • This can be water-based paint or conventional paints with organic solvents.
  • the electrostatic forces apparently have a positive effect on the orientation of the metal particles and thus on the color tone.
  • a waterborne basecoat is preferably processed with the method according to the invention. These are advantageous types of lacquer that are increasingly used.
  • the tension between the object to be repaired, e.g. a vehicle body, and the spray device can typically be 50 to 100 kV, the object being at a higher potential than the spray device.
  • the voltage is preferably selected in the same order of magnitude as when applying the base coating.
  • the invention further relates to a method for producing a coating, preferably a multi-layer effect coating, wherein
  • a basecoat film is produced on a substrate surface, - if necessary, the basecoat is overcoated with a transparent lacquer,
  • the basecoat film is preferably produced in an electrostatic application process.
  • the process according to the invention has the advantage that a uniform lacquer layer is obtained, in which repair areas are not recognizable.
  • the aim of the following example is to ensure a flawless painting process when first painting automobiles with metallic water-based paints (WBL) with the electrostatic gun REA III (ITW Ransburg endurentechnik GmbH, Dietzenbach, Germany).
  • the gun tip After switching on the high voltage, the gun tip must be held in the direction of the earthed part to be painted.
  • the high voltage is activated by pulling the gun lever.

  • humidifiable booths When processing water-thinnable basecoats (which also include the waterborne basecoat from series production), humidifiable booths must be used so that the color deviations in the assembly and spot paint repairs to be carried out during assembly differ by a maximum of 3-4 notes from the original painting (assessment according to DIN 53230 ).
