- flares To ward off guided missiles with infrared search heads, aircraft use, among other things, pyrotechnic infrared emitters, so-called flares. These flare ammunitions generally consist of a cartridge case with an electrical igniter and the pyrotechnic active mass. Cartridges for mock ammunition are available in many calibers. There are cylindrical ammunitions in calibers 26.5, 36, 38, 40 and 55 mm. There are also ammunitions with a rectangular cross-section in calibers 25x25, 25x52 and 52x65 mm. Sets of active substances based on magnesium / Teflon / Viton or on the basis of red phosphorus are frequently used as active compounds, and pyrophoric and hypergolic active compounds are also known.
