    Claims (15)

    1. Process for connecting material webs made of packaging material or the like, namely a new, initial portion (59) of a new web (34) to a run-off end (58) of a run-off web (29), by adhesive bonding or by a tape (60), it being the case that the run-off web (29) and the new web (34) are each gripped separately by clamping elements (49, 50; 51, 52) and severed by a severing cutter (56) to form web ends which are adjacent to one another in the same plane and which are connected to each other, with the following features:
      a) the new portion (59) of the new web (34) is gripped by a web pickup (44) at the new reel (30), drawn off said new reel (30) and held ready in a plane offset to the plane of the run-off web (29),
      b) the clamping elements, namely clamping parts (51, 52) for gripping the new, initial portion (59) of the new web (34) by a clamping action, are arranged in a plane offset to the run-off web (29) in such a manner that the new, initial part (59) of the new web (34) can be conveyed by the web pickup (24) between the clamping parts (51, 52) that have been moved apart from each other,
      c) the run-off web (29) is conveyed between the clamping parts (49, 50) that are arranged at a distance from one another and positioned offset to the new, initial part (59) of the new web (34),
      d) the run-off web (29) and the new web (34) are gripped by the clamping action of the assigned clamping parts (49, 50 and 51, 52, respectively),
      e) the clamping parts (49, 50; 51, 52) are then moved with the clamped run-off web (58) and new web (34) into a common plane, with the run-off web (58) and new web (34) being severed and the resulting, facing web ends connected to each other.
    2. Process according to Claim 1, characterized in that, for the purpose of forming the initial part (35) of the new web (34), a continuous outer covering of a new reel (30) or a continuous outer layer of the new web (34) is severed in the axial direction such that at least one free leg (38, 39) of the new web (34) hangs freely as a result of its own weight, and that the web leg (38, 39) is gripped on or at the new reel (30) and an initial part (35) is drawn off the new reel (30).
    3. Process according to Claim 1 or 2, characterized in that an end part (36), which has been severed from the run-off web (29) and is connected to a run-off reel, is wound up on the run-off reel (28) by rotary movement in the opposite direction.
    4. Process according to Claim 2 or 3, characterized in that the end part (36) of the run-off web (29), said end part being collected by being wound up on the run-off reel (28), and/or the initial part (35), which has been severed from the new web (34), is/are conveyed into a container (57), the end part (36) of the run-off web (29) being drawn off the run-off reel (28).
    5. Process according to Claim 2 to 4, characterized in that a reel core (11) remaining on the operating stub (26) of the run-off reel (28) is drawn off the operating stub (26) in the axial direction and is conveyed into a collecting container (62), preferably after the end part (36) of the run-off web (29) has been removed.
    6. Apparatus for connecting material webs made of packaging material or the like by adhesive bonding or by a tape (60) for the purpose of implementing the process according to one or more of the Claims 1 to 5, comprising a connecting assembly (40) with two pairs of clamping parts (49, 50; 51, 52), namely clamping parts (51, 52) for gripping the new web (34) and clamping parts (49, 50) for gripping the run-off web (29), and with a web pickup (44) that can be moved back and forth and by means of which the new, initial portion (59) of a new web (34) can be gripped in the region of the new reel (30), drawn off the latter and moved between the clamping parts (51, 52), which have been moved apart, to attain a final position of the web pickup (44), characterized in that the respective pairs (49, 50; 51, 52) for gripping the new web (34) and the run-off web (29) can be arranged in planes offset to one another, it being possible to move the clamping parts (51, 52) for the new web (34) in a transverse direction to achieve alignment with the clamping parts (49, 50) for the run-off web (29) and with a severing cutter (56) for severing the new, initial portion (59) of the new web (34) and the run-off end (58) of the run-off web (29).
    7. Apparatus according to Claim 6, characterized in that the initial part (35) of the new web (34), said initial part being drawn off by the web pickup (44), can be transferred to a web conveyor, in particular to a conveying roller (53) with mating roller (54) which can be pressed against it, by means of which a further portion of the new web (34) can be drawn off the new reel (30).
    8. Apparatus according to Claim 6 or 7, characterized in that, for the purpose of forming a free initial part (35) of the new web (34), a continuous covering or outer layer of the new reel (30) can be severed in the axial direction so as to form at least one web leg (38, 39), the pickup (44) gripping one of the web legs (38, 39) and drawing it off the new web (34).
    9. Apparatus according to Claim 6 or one of the further Claims 7 or 8, characterized in that the run-off reel (28) and the new reel (30) are each arranged on a carrying stub, namely on an operating stub (26) and a supply stub (27), respectively, it being the case that the operating stubs (26, 27) with run-off reel (28) and new reel (30) are arranged on a common, two-armed reel arm (23, 24) which can be rotated about a central rotary bearing (25), and it being the case that, in a processing position of the run-off reel (28) or new reel (30), the reel arm (23, 24) is arranged in an obliquely directed position and the reel which is to be processed in each case is oriented downwards.
    10. Apparatus according to Claim 6 or one of the further Claims 7 to 9, characterized in that mutually associated clamping parts (49, 50), on the one hand, and (51, 52), on the other hand, are in operational connection with one another, such that top clamping parts (49, 51) are arranged in a fixed starting position and bottom clamping parts (50, 52) can be moved in the direction of the fixed clamping parts (49, 51 ), preferably by means of a common crank mechanism (95).
    11. Apparatus according to Claim 6 or one of the further Claims 7 to 10, characterized in that in each case at least one clamping part (49, 51) of the paired and opposite clamping parts is mounted elastically, preferably by virtue of connection to tension springs (87) and (104), respectively, it being the case that the clamping parts (50, 52), which can each be moved by a drive, can be moved into abutment against the elastically mounted clamping parts (49, 51) for the purpose of clamping the run-off web (29) and the new web (34), and can be moved beyond this point counter to the elastic force.
    12. Apparatus according to Claim 10 or 11, characterized in that the crank mechanism (95) is connected to a carrier which can be moved up and down, in particular to a carriage (92), on which a pressure-exerting part (52) is attached directly and which acts, via compression springs (94), on another movable clamping part (52).
    13. Apparatus according to Claim 6 or one of the further Claims 7 to 12, characterized in that the severing cutter (56), for the purpose of severing the webs - run-off web (29) and new web (34) - by being moved upwards from a bottom position, severs first of all the new web (34) and then the run-off web (29), it being the case that preferably the severing cutter is arranged on a pressure-exerting part (52), such that it can be moved counter to elastic pressure, and can be moved upwards, for the purpose of carrying out a severing cut, by a separate drive, in particular by a pressure-exerting lever (99) which, during the upwards movement of the pressure-exerting part (52), can have a fixed protrusion (101) acting on it.
    14. Apparatus according to Claim 6 or one of the further Claims 7 to 13, characterized in that at least one pressure-exerting part (51), for the purpose of gripping one web - new web (34) - in a clamping position, is positioned beneath the movement plane of the other web - run-off web (29) - and, once the severing cut has been carried out, can be moved into a position above the run-off web (29) and new web (34) and, for returning to the (bottom) starting position, can be moved sideways and then to the starting position.
    15. Apparatus according to Claim 6 or one of the further Claims 7 to 14, characterized in that the tape (60) can be advanced up to the webs - run-off web (29), new web (34) - by a movable tape holder (61), it being the case that the tape holder (61) has a retaining head (108) on which the tape (60) is retained by suction air, and it being the case that the tape holder (61), which is preferably of angled design, can be pivoted out of a position in which the retaining head (108) is oriented upwards into a position in which the retaining head (108) is oriented downwards.
