Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for treating the surface of a sheet. of alloy-coated steel comprising essentially zinc and iron and the sheet which can be obtained by this process.
- Such a coated sheet is generally obtained by dipping a strip of bare steel in a bath of molten zinc followed by alloy annealing in suitable thermal conditions so that the zinc coating layer combines with the steel substrate.
- the galvanized steel sheets alloyed or not, have generally a roughness greater than steel sheets coated with zinc by electrodeposition; the surface of the galvanized alloy steel sheets present in particular many emerging crystals.
- such sheets are generally subjected to a work hardening operation between two cylinders of rolling in order, in particular, to print on their surface a roughness suitable for subsequent processing steps, such as stamping and / or setting painting.
- the roughness of a surface is commonly evaluated in the following conventional manner according to German standards DIN 4768 or 4777: several profilometric (or "profile") surveys of the surface are carried out, each profile being filtered during recording, by means of a high-pass electronic filter reducing the amplitude of the ripples exceeding a predetermined filtering threshold (here: threshold fixed at 2.5 mm, percentage of filtering at the threshold value: 50%); the vertical spread of this profile is then represented, that is to say the distribution of the depth recorded with respect to a given reference line (Ox); this reference line (Ox) is the straight line running parallel to the general direction of the profile and passing through its upper points; on the ordinate axis (Oz), drawn perpendicularly to Ox, the depths of the profile are plotted; the deviation of the roughness profile from the reference line Ox can be considered as a random variable and all the deviations or depths then form a statistical distribution from which the position of the mean line of the profile is calculated and l 'arithmetic mean deviation of the depth from the mean
- the arithmetic mean roughness R a of the sheets obtained is generally between 0.8 and 1.2 ⁇ m.
- Alloyed galvanized steel sheets generally have a excellent weldability, especially resistance welding, example spot welding or seam welding.
- the current supply and pressure maintenance organs for the spot welding are usually formed by welding electrodes per point.
- the electrodes generally used are made of high-grade cupro-alloy copper such as cupro-chrome with 1% chromium or cupro-chrome-zirconium with 1% chromium and 0.1% maximum zirconium.
- the document FR 93 09304 describes a process in which, before painting, vacuum deposit on the zinc-coated side to be painted, a thin film of chromium or chromium alloy, of thickness at most equal to 1 ⁇ m about.
- the film thickness must be greater than 0.01 ⁇ m.
- the object of the invention is to provide galvanized alloy steel sheets suitable for both resistance welding and electrophoresis painting.
- Document JP 08 060326 A (KOBE STEEL LTD) describes steel sheets dip coated with a layer of zinc, aluminum or their alloys and with a thin surface metallic film of Cr, Si, Cu, Ni, Co, Sn or Ag, or their alloys; the examples given in the description relate only zinc, zinc-nickel or aluminum-silicon coatings (see the second column of the tables) and metallic copper films, silicon or nickel (see the fourth column of the tables).
- these sheets are generally covered with a thin organic coating and are used in fields household appliances and building.
- these sheets generally have appearance defects of surface bound to the mattes present in the dip coating baths and flowering ("spangle" in English) caused by solidification of the coating.
- cylinders are used whose glossy surface has a roughness Ra ⁇ 0.1 ⁇ m; in practice, the roughness (R a ) of the sheets obtained remains greater than or equal to 0.05 ⁇ m.
- the shine that is obtained no longer depends the nature of the dip coating or the metallic film superficial.
- the work hardening operation can be carried out either before, after, or before and after the deposition of the metallic film (see in particular in examples, sixth column of the tables).
- the invention aims to obtain galvanized sheets both without crater defects and easily weldable and, knowing that, for craterization, only the alloyed galvanized sheets are and that, for weldability, it is chromium which is mainly cause, the invention relates here only to the much more specific field sheets coated with a layer of zinc and iron alloy, provided with a film thin metal of chromium or chromium-based alloy; none of Examples of document JP 08 060326 A do not relate to this specific field.
- the document JP 08 060326 A is only a generic disclosure which does not include any particular disclosure relating to the field of the invention; this generic disclosure relates to sheets with a shiny appearance and low roughness (R a ⁇ 0.2 ⁇ m) whereas the field of the invention is that of alloyed galvanized sheets which generally have, as indicated above, a higher roughness ( generally R a > 0.8 ⁇ m).
- the function of hardening has the function of making disappear the chromium from the reliefs or roughness plates of the surface, especially in places where the surface to be treated is brought into direct contact under pressure with the work hardening cylinder.
- the alloyed galvanized sheet obtained is weldable by resistance without the aforementioned drawbacks; it is very likely that, the electrical contact between the welding electrode and the sheet being established at the level of the reliefs or plates roughness devoid of chromium according to the invention, the risks are limited between the electrode and the sheet and we find good weldability.
- the quantity of chromium or chromium alloy on the surface of said relief patterns must remain less than 90% of the quantity total and overall chromium or chromium alloy of said thin film.
- the invention may also present one or more of the characteristics subject of claims 2 to 4.
- the invention also relates to a resistance welding process of a steel sheet coated with an alloy dip essentially comprising zinc and iron characterized in that before the actual welding operation speak, we proceed to a surface treatment according to the invention.
- the invention also relates to a method of painting by electrophoresis of a steel sheet coated with an alloy quench comprising essentially zinc and iron characterized in that, before application to strictly speaking of electrophoresis painting, we proceed to a surface treatment according to the invention.
- the surface treatment according to the invention therefore applies to sheets of alloyed galvanized steel, obtained in a conventional manner by immersion of a bare steel sheet in a bath consisting essentially of liquid zinc and by heat treatment of the sheet thus coated.
- This sheet can be coated on one side or on both sides.
- part of the iron in the substrate diffuses into the surface layer of zinc so that a coating of Zn-Fe alloy with an average iron content of the order of 10%.
- the thickness of the coating of Zn-Fe alloy is generally between 5 and 10 ⁇ m; the numerous crystals emerging at the surface give the sheet a high roughness, corresponding to R a values much greater than 1 ⁇ m; these crystals generally correspond to so-called ⁇ and ⁇ phases.
- a thin film of chromium or of alloy of chromium with an average thickness of between 0.01 and 1 ⁇ m, for example equal to 0.5 ⁇ m.
- This thin film can be deposited chemically and / or electrochemically in a manner known per se by dipping under possible polarization in a chromium plating bath.
- this thin film is deposited under vacuum as described in the document FR 93 09304, for example by evaporation, by ion spraying or by magnetron sputtering.
- This hardening operation is of a conventional type, known in itself, usually performed after cold rolling of steel sheets, in particular to print on the sheet a roughness adapted to the transformations or to subsequent uses of the sheet, obviously lower than that of the surface before work hardening.
- the roughness R a of the sheets obtained is generally between 0.8 and 1.2 ⁇ m.
- this operation can be carried out with watering by a work hardening solution.
- this sheet treated according to the invention is painted by cataphoresis, we get as few crater-like defects as when we put in painting the same sheet treated by the process described in document FR 93 09304, i.e. also with a chrome film but without posterior work hardening.
- the chromium film is no longer homogeneous and continuous as previously; it is a discontinuous film distributed mainly in the hollows roughness of the surface.
- the method according to the invention therefore makes it possible to prepare a steel sheet. galvanized alloy with a discontinuous film of chromium or alloy based on chromium, mainly distributed in the roughness hollows of the sheet.
- chromium or the chromium alloy disappear from the relief patterns or trays from the surface
- the purpose of this example is to illustrate the improvement in the weldability of sheets galvanized alloy steel that is obtained when treated on the surface the invention.
- This example is also intended to illustrate the improvement of the ability to the cataphoretic painting of galvanized alloy steel sheets that obtained when treated on the surface according to the invention, in particular in terms of resistance to craterization.
- V max the maximum electrophoretic voltage V max is measured . in the paint bath beyond which crater-like defects appear on the layer of paint applied to the coated face of the sheet.
- the paint bath used is a used conventional cataphoretic bath referenced PPG 718960 from the PPG Company.
- used bath is meant a bath that has already been used for operations of painting to the point that it is particularly likely to generate defects in the form of craters on alloyed galvanized sheets.
- the purpose of this example is to illustrate the improvement in the weldability of sheets galvanized alloy steel that is obtained when treated on the surface the invention, even when the chromium film has an average thickness very weak, in particular less than or equal to 0.2 ⁇ m.
