Abstract

An adjustable bed consists of a fixed base (1) supporting a horizontal (3) and at least one movable (2) section which can be set at an angle relative to the horizontal one. The pivoted head section of the bed is raised or lowered by means of at least one bar connected to a drive motor which also moves the horizontal section as the head section's position is altered. The horizontal section of the bed is mounted on a frame which is able to move relative to the fixed base. The adjustable section is operated by two bars linked by a cross-member with rollers. In a variant of the design, the bars can be actuated by two-arm levers connected to power cylinders beneath the fixed base. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to an articulated bed base, at least the torso part of which is capable of pivoting and sliding relative to a fixed frame.

These articulated sections are moved by one or more electric motors that change their orientation via connecting rods and pivoting levers. The most common use of these bed bases is to raise the headboard section, i.e., the head of the bed base, so that the user is in a semi-reclined position, making it easier, for example, to read. However, simply pivoting this headboard section relative to the rest of the bed base, which raises the user, systematically moves them further from the head of the bed, and therefore away from the light, the bedside table, the telephone, etc.

The GB-A-2 124 896 is a known example of a mattress support that is flexible and attached at its head to a vertical, continuous band. The support moves on rollers when the upper section is raised, thus preventing it from moving away from the headboard. However, this system is not suitable for adjustable bed bases with connecting rods and pivoting levers.

The Applicant has therefore developed a different mechanism which allows the entire sleeping section to slide relative to the fixed frame, as the torso section is raised, so that the user's head always remains in the immediate vicinity of the headboard, whether lying down or sitting up.

A principal object of the present invention is therefore an articulated bed base whose sleeping part comprises a horizontal plane and at least one part tiltable articulated on said horizontal plane, operated by at least one motor which modifies its orientation by means of connecting rods and/or pivoting levers, articulated on the fixed frame of the bed base, at least one connecting rod being supported by its opposite end on the tiltable part of the bed constituting the torso part, bed base according to which the entire sleeping part moves in translation on the fixed frame, and is connected to the end of the connecting rod and according to which the motor which controls the pivoting of the connecting rod and the tiltable part of the bed, also controls the movement of the entire sleeping part towards the head of the bed.

According to a first variant embodiment, the end of the connecting rod rests on the tiltable part, substantially in its middle area, and it is articulated with said tiltable part at this point.

According to another embodiment, the horizontal plane of the sleeping area rests on a mobile frame translating on the fixed frame, at least one crossbar connecting the end of each connecting rod to the mobile frame and each end of the connecting rod carrying a roller on which rests the tilting part of the sleeping area.

Advantageously, a hook is fixed to each end of a pivoting control bar extending transversely to the moving frame, and the end of the large arm of the hook pivots on the end of the connecting rod, while on the end of the small arm of the hook, which extends downwards in the opposite direction, is connected the rod of a cylinder mounted on the fixed frame, which constitutes the driving element for the pivoting of the connecting rod.

The specific features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of exemplary embodiments, in which reference will be made to the attached drawings which represent:
  • Figure 1 is a schematic elevation view of the hinged bed frame in a horizontal position.
  • Figures 2 and 3 of the views showing the bed base with the torso part respectively in intermediate position and in maximum inclined position.
  • Figure 4 shows a larger-scale elevation view of another variant of the hinged bed base in a horizontal position, and Figure 5 shows the same view. with the torso part in an inclined position.

Figure 1 is a schematic illustration of a bed base according to the invention, in which the sleeping area consists of a horizontal plane 3 that can move in translation along the fixed frame 1 of the bed and a tilting section 2 hinged to the plane 3. A connecting rod 4, the length of which is proportional to that of the tilting section 2 constituting the headboard, is hinged on one side to the fixed frame 1 at its headboard 6 and on the other side to the tilting section substantially in its midsection, the articulation between the connecting rod and the tilting section being ensured at this point. Alternatively, the connecting rod 4 could be fixed to the pivoting mechanism of the tilting section. A safety bar 5 is located at the foot of the bed, between the horizontal plane 3 and the frame 1, to prevent any accidents, as will be shown later. Figures 2 and 3 clearly show that when the torso part 2 is tilted, due to the connecting rod 4, the horizontal sleeping plane 3 and the torso part move in translation away from the foot of the bed, which has the effect that the upper end of the torso part remains at the same distance from the head of the bed regardless of its degree of inclination.

Figure 4 shows in more detail an articulation mechanism inspired by the one schematically represented in Figure 1. The fixed frame 1 consists of the two longitudinal bed rails, connected by hidden transverse rails. The headboard 6, also fixed, is attached to the frame.

Mounted transversely between its two longitudinal members on this movable chassis is a control bar 8 that can pivot. A handle 9 is fixed to each end of the bar, one long arm 9a of which extends substantially horizontally towards the head. of the bed, while its small arm 9b extends in the opposite direction and downwards, its end 10 protruding under the fixed frame 1. The movable rod 11 of a jack 12 mounted on the movable frame 13 connects to this end 10 of each bracket. The end of the large arm 9a of each bracket supports a roller 14 mounted freely on an axle 15. The end of the connecting rod 4, shown schematically in Figures 1 to 3, pivots on this axle 15. This connecting rod is shaped like a cane, the opposite end of which is articulated on a bracket 16, fixed to the fixed frame 1 in the immediate vicinity of the headboard 6. There are therefore two connecting rods articulated to each of the two pivoting lateral brackets. Figure 4 shows that each connecting rod extends horizontally between the headboard and the movable frame 13 and keeps the latter as far away from the headboard as possible. The horizontal plane 3, corresponding to the sleeping area, which remains horizontal, is fixed to the movable frame 13 at several points on its surface, notably by the joint 17. The tilting section 2 of the bed base is connected to plane 3 by a set of joints 18 and rests on rollers 14 mounted at the ends of the brackets 9. Alternatively, the rollers 14 could be replaced by glides. The entire sleeping section of the bed base, shown in Figure 4, is therefore horizontal, and the end of the tilting section 2 is located in the immediate vicinity of the headboard 6.

Pour cela le châssis mobile roule, grâce à ses galets 7, sur le châssis fixe 1.Figure 5 shows the bed base when the torso section is inclined. To move to this position, the user activates the actuator 12, whose rod 11 acts on the end 10 of the arm 9, pivoting it around its axis, which is the control bar 8. The resulting upward movement of the arms 9a raises the tilting section 2 via the rollers 14. The end of this section pivots relative to the plane 3 thanks to the joints 18. During this pivoting, the connecting rod 4, attached at its end to the arm 9, is also moved upwards by pivoting around the support arm 16 and thus exerts a pulling force. on the handle which has the effect of moving the mobile frame 13 - and the whole sleeping part which it supports - towards the head of the bed 6. For this the mobile frame rolls, thanks to its rollers 7, on the fixed frame 1.

In the position shown, the upper inclined section 2 has moved and its end is now in the immediate vicinity of the headboard 6, as when the bed is in a horizontal position. The user thus remains close to the lights and bedside tables.

Figure 3 shows that in the inclined torso position, the horizontal plane 3 has moved away from the foot of the bed, leaving a gap between the mattress and the base. If any object were placed in this gap, it would obstruct the return of the bed base to the horizontal position. The safety bar 5 mentioned above would then be subjected to pressure exerted by the object being pushed back by the bed, triggering a switch that reverses the direction of action of the actuator or motor. Therefore, there is no risk of damage to the object, the bed, or the mechanism.

Pour revenir à cette position horizontale on effectue la manoeuvre inverse à partir du vérin 12.To return to this horizontal position, the reverse maneuver is performed from cylinder 12.
