  • This expansion continues until a predetermined torque is measured, by a torque detector, between the lapping 4 and the pinion 1 angularly immobilized by the finger 18. The detection of this torque is the sign that the pinion 1 is is perfectly centered on the lap.
  • a fifth step the supply of the second piston 8 is again reversed, by pressurizing its connector 15, so that the piston 8 is brought back to the end of travel in the direction of advance (upwards). and re-clamps against the stop 3 the pinion 1 previously centered by the lapping 4.
  • the actual lapping of the pinion 1 can then be carried out by the lapping 4, the device 5 remaining in the same position.
  • the stroke of the second piston 8 can be very short (of the order of 0.5 mm) since this piston has the sole function of allowing, after clamping the pinion, an unclamping of the pinion with a view to centering the latter by the lapping 4 and then re-clamping the pinion after centering by the lapping 4.
  • the first piston 7 must on the other hand have a sufficient stroke to allow the clamping, against the same fixed stop 3, of all the pinions 1 to be run in, that is to say compensation for the differences in axial thickness that these pinions 1 may have between their two opposite reference surfaces coming into contact one with the fixed stop 3 and the other with the movable support piece 10 of the device 5.
  • the anti-rotation finger 18 is a fixed, uncontrolled part, which is not stressed during the actual running-in, the pinion then being immobilized angularly by its blocking against the stop 3.
  • the hydraulic control 19 of the device 5 comprises three sub-assemblies 20, 21 and 22.
  • the hydraulic control 19 of the device 5 is completed by an electronic control 23 which controls the progress of the sequences as described above, by making use of a measurement of the torque on the lapping 4 (detector element 24) to define the end of the pinion centering cycle 1.
  • This torque measurement can be done, for example, by measuring the current absorbed by the electric motor for driving the lapping, or in any other manner known per se.
