Definitions
- the catalysts are chosen from titanium alcoholates, such as tetralkyl titanates, and chelates of Ti, Zr, Fe or Zn with 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds such as acetylacetonates of Ti, Zr, Fe or Zn.
- the present invention therefore relates to the process for the manufacture of a compound of formula (I), as defined above, in the presence of at least one magnesium alcoholate as catalyst.
- magnesium alcoholates Mg (OR) 2 mention may be made of those for which R represents a linear C1-C4 alkyl group, such as methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl. Mention may more particularly be made of the alcoholates for which R represents ethyl or n-propyl.
- magnesium diethylate It is preferred to use magnesium diethylate.
- reagents of formula (II) mention may in particular be made of methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, n-butyl and isobutyl acrylates and methacrylates.
- heterocyclic alcohol of formula (III) mention may be made, in particular, of 1- (2-hydroxyethyl) -imidazolidyl-2-one (HEIO).
- the amount of catalyst used for implementing the process according to the invention is generally between 0.5 and 4% by moles, and preferably between 1 and 2.5% by moles, relative to the heterocyclic alcohol of formula (III).
- the reaction of the process according to the invention can be carried out in the presence of an excess of one or the other of the reactants. It is however recommended that the molar (meth) acrylate of formula (II) / heterocyclic alcohol of formula (III) is between approximately 1.1 and 7.0, preferably between 2.0 and 6.0. By operating with a large molar excess of (meth) acrylate relative to the heterocyclic alcohol, one obtains, at the end of the reaction, a solution of compound of formula (I) in (meth) acrylate which can be used directly for certain applications, such as obtaining paints and coatings or treating leather.
- the reaction of the process according to the invention is preferably carried out in the presence of at least one polymerization inhibitor, used, for example, in an amount of 0.05 to 0.5% by weight based on the weight of the heterocyclic alcohol of formula (III).
- polymerization inhibitors which can be used, mention may in particular be made of phenothiazine, methyl ether of hydroquinone, di-tertiobutylcatechol, hydroquinone, p-anilinophenol, paraphenylene diamine and their mixtures in all proportions.
- the reaction of the process according to the invention is preferably carried out under a pressure not exceeding atmospheric pressure, for example a pressure between 0.3 and 1 bar.
- the reaction is carried out under air bubbling to improve the effectiveness of the stabilizers. It is carried out by mixing the (meth) acrylate of formula (II) and the heterocyclic alcohol of formula (III), and by heating the reaction mixture at reflux, generally at a temperature between 85 and 105 ° C., this temperature being obviously dependent on the exact nature of the alcohol and (meth) acrylate, and on the catalytic system used.
- the duration of the reaction according to the invention obviously depends on reaction conditions, such as temperature, pressure and the amount of catalyst used, but is generally between 3 and 15 hours about. It obviously also depends on the nature of the reagents used.
- the reaction mixture is therefore heated at reflux until the head temperature reaches the distillation temperature of the azeotrope of (meth) acrylate and of the alcohol of formula R2OH formed by the reaction when an azeotrope is formed. .
- any excess (meth) acrylate can then be removed by evaporation, so as to isolate the compound of formula (I) from the reaction medium, generally in the solid state: thus, 1- (2-hydroxyethyl acrylate) ) imidazolidyl-2-one is a white crystalline solid with a melting point of 43 ° C, cold soluble in ketones, alcohols, aromatic hydrocarbons and water, cold insoluble in saturated hydrocarbons and which precipitates at 0 ° C in ethyl acrylate.
- 1- (2-hydroxyethyl) imidazolidyl-2-one methacrylate is a white crystalline solid with a melting temperature of 47 ° C, having the same solubility properties as the previous acrylate.
- the crystalline solid product can also be purified by filtration then washing with petroleum ether, and drying.
- the isolation of the compound (I) can also be carried out by partial evaporation of the (meth) acrylate, then crystallization at a sufficiently low temperature (preferably less than or equal to 0 ° C.) and for a sufficiently long period (possibly reaching up to at 3 p.m.), then filtration followed by the purification steps described above.
- a third method for isolating the compound of formula (I) from the solution containing it consists in carrying out an extraction with water, followed by decantation, a concentration of (meth) acrylate and stages of purifi -cation described above.
- 195 g are introduced into a double-jacketed glass reactor equipped with a temperature measurement probe, a mechanical stirrer with variable speed, an adiabatic column with packing, and topped with a reflux head.
- HEIO methyl methacrylate
- MAM methyl methacrylate
- PTZ phenothiazine
- a column head stabilization is brought into service with a 0.2% solution of hydroquinone methyl ether (EMHQ) in MMA.
- EMHQ hydroquinone methyl ether
- the contents of the reactor are brought to boiling under atmospheric pressure for 1 hour, at a column head temperature of 98-100 ° C and a column bottom temperature of 100 ° C or less, and the water is removed by azeotropic distillation with methyl methacrylate.

Abstract
Description
-
