Definitions
- the subject of the present invention is articles of jewelry and methods of manufacturing them.
- the technical sector of the invention is that of the manufacture of certain articles of jewelry such as for example pens, lighters, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, pendants and ...
- Metallic tubular braids are known which are made up of interlaced metallic wires or ribbons, and machines are also known for industrially manufacturing such tubular braids. Such braids are used in particular to sheath flexible tubes, in order to increase their resistance to pressure and to protect them mechanically (EP-A-0 069 957).
- the present invention provides a new application for tubular metal braids.
- An object of the present invention is to provide articles of jewelry or goldsmithery, that is to say articles composed of precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum, or stainless metals which have an ornamental and original exterior appearance which can be manufactured industrially using a relatively low weight of precious metal.
- the articles of jewelry and goldsmithery according to the invention comprise a braid composed of crisscrossed ribbons, in which each ribbon is made up of several precious or stainless metal wires, identical and juxtaposed.
- the jewelry articles according to the invention comprise a tubular braid which is composed of threads or ribbons intertwined in several colors.
- the tubular braid is fixed to said rigid body by its two ends while being held in tension, so that it is pressed against said rigid body and so that said intertwined ribbons provide free spaces between them which said rigid body is apparent.
- the invention results in new jewelry articles, in particular pens, lighters or other articles comprising a rigid cylindrical body, of circular or oval section, which body is wrapped in a sheath constituted by a tubular braid formed of ribbons. or of crisscrossed wires of precious or stainless metals and, preferably, of several alternating colors, which gives these articles an original and ornamental external appearance.
- machines are known capable of industrially making a metal braid on a cable or on a tube and it is therefore easy to industrially make tubular braids composed of wires or ribbons of precious or stainless metals.
- metal braids have the property of being easily deformable.
- They can in particular be stretched, which makes it possible to reduce their diameter or their transverse dimension.
- This method of mounting a tubular braid on a rigid body also has the advantage that the extension of the tubular braid results in the appearance of diamond-shaped openings between the ribbons or the wires which move apart. from each other and the rigid body is visible through these openings, which contributes to giving the article of jewelry an original exterior appearance.
- the jewelry articles according to the invention can also be jewelry such as bracelets, necklaces, pendants or earrings, part of which consists of a tubular braid composed of threads or ribbons intertwined with precious metal.
- Figure 1 shows an axial half-section and an external half-view of a pen body according to the invention.
- Figure 2 is a cross section along II-II of Figure 1.
- FIG. 3 represents an axial half-section and an external half-view of a lighter according to the invention.
- FIG. 4 is a cross section along IV-IV of FIG. 3.
- Figure 5 shows an axial section of an article being made.
- Figures 1 and 2 show a pen which has a rigid cylindrical body 1 having a circular section. It is a pen sold in jewelry or jewelry and the body 1 is made of precious metal or metal plated with gold.
- the body 1 contains the ink tank and an internal mechanism which are not shown.
- the cylindrical body 1 is wrapped over its entire length by a sheath 2 which is a tubular braid composed of wires or ribbons of precious or stainless metal, which are arranged in several directions and which are interlaced or intertwined.
- a sheath 2 which is a tubular braid composed of wires or ribbons of precious or stainless metal, which are arranged in several directions and which are interlaced or intertwined.
- FIG. 1 represents a preferred embodiment comprising ribbons 3 parallel to one direction and ribbons 4 parallel to another direction, each ribbon being made up of several identical small wires juxtaposed, having a very small diameter, for example a diameter of 0.2 mm, so the weight of precious or stainless metal per unit length of the braid is relatively small, of the order of 5 to 10 g for the entire braid fitted to a pen.
- the ribbons having the same direction are alternately of two different colors.
- the ribbons 3 comprise ribbons 3a of golden color which alternate with ribbons 3b of silver color.
- the ribbons 4 alternately comprise ribbons 4a of one color and ribbons 4b of another color and these colors can be respectively identical to the colors of the ribbons 3a and 3b or different from these colors.
- the two ends of the tubular braid 2 are fixed to the ends of the rigid body 1, for example by welding.
- a ring 5 which surrounds each end of the body 1 and which is welded to the body and / or to the braid.
- FIGS 3 and 4 show a lighter which comprises a rigid cylindrical body 6 having an oval cross section which contains the fuel tank and the lighter mechanism not shown.
- This lighter further comprises a cover 7 also having a rigid cylindrical body which fits onto the body 6.
- the body 6 and the cover 7 are each wrapped in a sheath 8, 9 which is a tubular braid composed of ribbons or threads intertwined with precious or stainless metal.
- the braids 8, 9 have a composition identical to that of the braid 2. They differ from it only in the oval shape of the cross section which is obtained by making the braids 8 and 9 on an oval-shaped mandrel.
- the two ends of each braid 8, 9 are fixed to the rigid body which is enveloped by the braid and are covered with a ring 10.
- the upper ring 10 of the lighter body 6 is slightly set back from the upper end of the body to allow the fitting of the cover 7 on the body 6.
- a method of manufacturing a pen according to FIGS. 1 and 2 comprises the following operations.
- a tubular sheath is made up of precious metal or stainless steel wires having a diameter of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 mm, which are braided. This operation is carried out on a machine of the type used to make braided sleeves around the electric cables or around the flexible tubes.
- the tubular sheath is composed for example of crisscrossed ribbons, each ribbon being composed of several identical wires juxtaposed.
- the ribbons are arranged for example in two directions.
- the braid comprises ribbons 3 which are wound in parallel helices which rotate in one direction and ribbons 4 which are wound in parallel helices, of the same pitch and in opposite directions to the direction of the helices 3.
- each ribbon 3 successively intersects the ribbons 4 and it passes alternately above and below the successive ribbons 4, which is expressed by saying that the ribbons are intertwined and interlaced.
- the tubular braid is made by winding the ribbons around a cylindrical mandrel whose diameter is slightly greater than the diameter of the rigid body 1 of the pens.
- Successive ribbons having the same direction can be juxtaposed or slightly spaced from each other and, in this case, the braid has diamond-shaped openings which are delimited by four crisscrossed ribbons.
- FIG. 5 shows the next step.
- the pen bodies 1 generally have a female thread 2a, 2b at each of their ends.
- a small threaded end 11 having a male thread which is screwed into the female thread of the body.
- These tips are made of a material that resists the temperature of the soldering furnace.
- threaded ends made of graphite or ceramic are used. These tips have for example a length of the order of a centimeter and they protrude on each side of the body 1.
- each braid section 2 previously cut to the length of the pen body, a pen body 1 fitted at its two ends with a tip 11.
- tubular braid has an internal diameter which corresponds to that of the mandrel on which it was manufactured and which is greater than that of the pen body.
- the tubular braid 2 is then stretched longitudinally so that it stretches by covering the end pieces 11 and that its internal diameter decreases.
- solder paste is applied to the braid, around the two ends of the body 1, which corresponds to the nature of the metals composing the braid and the body 1, for example paste gold in the case where the body 1 is made of gold or gold plated and the braid 2 is made of gold thread.
- the bodies 1 carrying the braids coated with solder paste are then introduced into a soldering oven, which has the effect of welding the braid at the ends of the body 1.
- the action of heat on the braid also has the effect of annealing the braid and therefore reducing the internal tensions in the braid which tended to bring the braid back to its initial state.
- the body 1 carrying the braid welded to the body is removed from the oven, the fixing collars 12 and the end pieces 11 are removed and the extra lengths of the braid are cut, that is to say the parts located beyond the ends of the body 1.
- a ring 5 which has been coated internally with solder paste is then threaded on each end of the braid and it is again introduced into an oven to weld the rings on the ends of the braid.
- the duration of the second stay in the oven is shorter than the duration of the first stay in order to avoid melting the welding of the braid on the body 1.
- the manufacture of a lighter according to FIGS. 3 and 4 comprises the same sequence of operations, but this sequence is repeated for the body 6 and for the cover 7.
- the only difference resides in the fact that the tubular braid is made on a chuck having a section homothetic oval of the lighter section.
- Figures 1 to 4 show jewelry items having a rigid cylindrical body having a solid wall. It is specified that in the case of jewelry such as bracelets or necklaces, the rigid body can be in the form of a cage or is made up of longitudinal rods which keep the braid stretched.
