ORNAVIENTAL ROPE.
Application filed January 27, 15122. Serial No. 532,224.
To all whom t may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, SAHATIEL G. MAN- DALniN, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Ornamental Rope, of which the following is a specification;
My invention relates to a rope adapted for use in bracelets, necklaces, handles for bags, and other useful structures wherein a rope forms constituent part or is employed as a bindingl agent, or otherwise.
The essential objects of my invention are to insure a maximum of strength and durability combined with fleibility, pliability, lightness, and softness; imperviousness to wear or injury; and capacity for ornamental effects. Other objects and advantages will be disclosed by an inspection of the following speoilication.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying dra-wings which forni a part of this specification, y
Figure 1 isa side elevation of a length of rope embodying my invention,
Figure 2,'a central longitudinal section of the same showing the interior in side elevation,
Figure 3, 'an end elevation of the same,
Figures 4; and 5, an enlarged fragmentary side elevation and vertical ,section respectively of one form of mesh sheath construction,
Figures 6 and 7, side elevations of other forms of mesh sheath construction, and
Figure 8, an end elevation of a modified form of my novel rope.
Like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the views.
My rope comprises a flexible metallic sheath or armor 10 capable of resisting eX- ternal blows, and of imparting great resistance to longitudinal or other tensile strain. The sheath consists of a iiexible metal fabric having interstices 11 which permit visibility, to a limited extent, of the color or the material enclosed by the sheath.
The preferred form of mesh fabric, which is shown in Figures 1 and 5, is a scale mesh, formed by parallel rows of rings 13, each four adjacent rings being interlocked with a flat link or plate 151 of cruciform shape by four corner prongs 15 converging in the rear of the plate.
A metallic fabric of ring mesh which may constitute the sheath comprises parallel rows of ring links 17, each group of four rings being engaged by a ring 18, as shown in Figure 6.
In Figure 7 is shown another alternative sheath st ucture consisting of a lock link mesh fabric. Herein the links are arranged in rows, and each vU shaped folded link 19 has terminal loops E20 through which pass the links of an adjacent row.
ln all three forms of link mesh -it will be observed that the links are loosely interengaged.
lsithin the sheath 10 is a core 22 or body of relatively soft pliable material such as thread or yarn united in strands and longitudinally twisted or braided. The form of core herein shown consists of soft threads 23 loosely twisted to form strands 9A: which in turn are loosely twisted to form the core. The core thoroughly iills the sheath and frictionallyV engages the same and the core combined with the sheath constitutes the rope.
In Figure 8 is shown a modilication of my invention wherein the mesh sheath 10 is elliptical in cross section, and the core consists of a length of tubular woven fabric or webbing 26. As described the mesh sheath of thin metal parts affords, because of its interstices a visibility of the color of the core which may be any shade desired.
rlhe flexible character of the mesh admits bending and twisting of the rope. lts metallic character insures not only strength and durability but also enables the rope to sustain great strain. The soft core contributes to the flexibility of the chain as well as the pliability thereof. The rope because of its structure is exceedingly light as well as strong, and combines increased utility with beauty of appearance.
l claim 1. An ornamental rope comprising a pliable core, and a metallic link mesh sheath surrounding and engaging the core.
2. An ornamental rope comprising a soft pliable core and loosely interlocking links embracing and surrounding the core.
In testimony whereof I have aiiiXed my signature.
SAHATIEL Gr. MANDALIAN.
