4 Claims. (Cl. 63-3) This application relates to the art of jewelry and particularly concerns a novel braid useful in forming bracelets, rings and the like. I
The invention is adapted for use in any ornament requiring a band-like structure. A particular feature of the inventionis the inherent flexibility of the braid Whichpermits any band-like structure in which it is embodied to be bent to conform to the shape and size of portion of thebody upon which it is worn. The braid will preferably be made of gold, platinum or other precious and semi-preciousmetals. Any. desired length of braid canbe woven'according to the invention.
It is therefore a principal object of the invention to provide a jewelry braid inband form having in a preferred form ends tapered in a similar manner.
It is a further object to provide a metal braid which is sufliciently soft and flexible to be shaped to a desired contour and which will retain the configuration to which it is set.
It is a further object to provide a braid which is relatively simple in structure yet highly ornamental in appearance.
It is a further object to provide a braid of wires woven in a pattern in which sections of the wires are disposed obliquely both transversely and longitudinally of the linear extent of the band.
Other and further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description taken together with the drawing wherein:

Figs. 3 through 8 show successive steps in the braiding operation employed in forming a braid according to the invention.
In Fig. l isshown a braided ring according to the invention. The braid is shaped as a substantially closed ring. Its ends A are narrow and tapered. The braid tapers progressively in width from its ends to its center C.
The moldable feature of the braid is illustrated in Fig. 2 where the curvature of the braid transverse to its length is clearly shown while the curvature along the length of the braid is shown in Fig. 1. The curvatures shown in Figs. 1 and 2 are both obtainable by finger pressure after the braid is woven and the several wires are soldered according to the invention.
In order to construct the braid according to the invention an even number of wires are initially required. During the construction of the braid, any number of wires may be used but at least four wires are initially required. In Fig. 3 are shown four jewelry wires 10, 11, 12, 13. Wire 10 is the pilot transverse wire. At the end of wire 10 are attached the other wires. A loop 16 is formed at the end of each of wires 11, 12, 13 where it is drawn tightly around wire 10 at right angles thereto and secured by a soldered joint 15. soldered to wire .12 at point P as shown in Fig. 8. The new wire is then workedinto .thebraid, its two portions 17A and 17B extending from loop 18 being woven as if they were independent wires under andover the outer wires in the pattern established as. shown in Fig. 8. Additional wires may be added to progressively widen the braid. A further wire is shown soldered at point P" to wire 1t and the two sections 19A and 19B are'woven in the established pattern. It will be noted that at all points in-the pattern of the braid an .even
number of wires are being woven.
To narrow the width of the braid one or more pairs of wires must be terminated. Termination of wires'is' done by cutting two adjacent Wires at any desired point and soldering-them on a transverse section of supporting wire; thus wires 17A and 10 are terminated by cutting them and joining their end-s in a soldered joint 20 looped on the transverse section T of wire 19B. Further narrowing of the braid is done by cutting further adjacent wires and looping them in a soldered joint on a supporting transverse section T, until the braid is reduced to four wires which will be terminated 'in the same manner as the braid is begun as shown in Fig. 8.
In this termination the ends of three wires will be looped and soldered on a short transverse section of a supporting fourth wire.
It is possible to terminate the braid at any point by looping all longitudinally extending wires on a final transverse wire section T, soldering the loop to the transverse section and cutting off the remainder of the longitudinal wires. is desired that the braid be fabricated with similarly tapered ends.
. After the braid is fully woven and all joints soldered the braid should be molded into desired shape both transversely and longitudinally. The jewelry wire will necessarily be soft or flexible enough to be bent rather readily but will generally be stiff enough to retain the shape in which it is bent.
The versatility of the braid structure disclosed is quite evident since it is adaptable to bracelets, neck bands, rings, arm bands and similar ornaments as will be obvious to those skilled inthe art.
Regardless of the type of material used in the braid or the shape in which it is molded, it is desired that all variations and modifications be protected by United States Letters Patent which come within the scope of. the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A jewelry braid comprising a plurality of wires interwoven in a pattern in which they alternately intersect each. other diagonally with respect to the longitudinal .axis of the braid and constituting diagonally extending warp and woof components of the braid, one of said wires being a starting wire and extending transversely of the braid at one end of said braid, the other wires being In order to widen the;

3; A jewelry braid in accordance with claim 1, wherein the starting wire loops back upon itself at a selected point intermediate the startingand opposite ends of'the braid and extends diagonally from said point in the direction of the starting end of said braid, being reversely bent upon reaching thev sideedges of said braid, and being once, again looped back upon itself at a selected point between the first mentioned point and the starting end of the braid, and extending diagonally from said second point in the direction of the opposite end of the braid, being reversely bent upon reaching the side edges of said braid, and being interwoven at all intersecting points with itself and with the other wires constituting the braid.
4. A jewelry braid in accordance with claim 1, wherein the braid is tapered from relatively narrow proportions at its starting and opposite ends to relatively wide proportions at its starting and opposite ends to relatively wide proportions intermediate said ends, additional wires being interwoven with said starting and other wires, said additional wires being added to one of the relatively narrow portions of the braid by looping them around at least one of said starting and other wires and then extending said additional wires diagonally across the braid to one side edge thereof and reversely bending said additional wires at said last mentioned side edge and extending them diagonally across the braid to the opposite side edge thereof and reversely bending said additional wires at said opposite side edge and extending them diagonally across 'the braid to the first side edge thereof, this arrangement continuing through the relatively wide portion of the braid to the other relatively narrow portion thereof.
