My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in bandeaux, whereby a bandeau having an elastic peripheral edge surrounding the entire crown portion thereof,

:nay be produced in a quick and facile manner, and at a greatly reduced cost.

y invention further relates to a novel and inexpensive method of making bandeaux, having a crown portion or body porion of open knitted mesh and having an elastic edge extending around the entire lower periphery of the body or crown portion.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying draw- `ng one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found vin practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my `nvention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and /o'rganization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.

Referring to the drawing in which like reference characters indicate like parts, Figure ban eau embodying my invention, shown applied to. the head of the wearer. Figure 2 shows a plan view (broken away in part) of the open mesh knitted fabric with opposed elastic longitudinal edges, representing the first step or stage in the making of the novel bandeau.

Figure 3 represents finished bandeau.

In carr ing out my invention, I knit, upon any suita le at knitting machine, an openmesh fabric of suitable width and of an :.uitable stitch, such as the fabric 4 illustrated in Figure 2. Simultaneously with the knitting of the fabric 4, a pair of elastic bands, such as the rubber bands 5 and 6 are fed into the knitting machine, warp-wise or longitudinally of the fabric, and are interlaced with border row of chain stitches 7, so that the latter form a generally tubular or tulze-like casing about the elastic bands 5 an 6.

In Figure 2, a piece of the fabric is illus- 35 atop plan view of the 1 represents a perspective view of my novel ,head snugly, as illustrated in trated somewhat diagrammatically, with the center portion broken away. This fabric is knitted in continuous manner, with the elastic strands 5 and 6 extending along the corrspondin'g longitudinal edges 8 and 9 thereo At suitable intervals, depending upon the size of bandeau desired, the fabric is gathered or shirred as at 10 and 11, and tied by any suitable fastening means 12 and 13, such as a thin thread wrapped around the shirred portion several times and tied. Other fastening means may be employed too, however, such as metallic clips, clamped onto the shirred or gathered portion.

With this, thel bandeau is formed. The shirring or gathering on the ytwo opposed elastic edges 8 and 9 causes a bulging formation in the center which gives rise to the head-pocket or crown portion of the bandeau, while the two elastic strands 5 and 6, joined by the fastening means 12 and 13, form a generally continuous elastic periphery around the edge of the crown portion. After the bandeaux are thus gathered and tied or fastened, they are cut apart between successive sets of fastening means 12 and 13, and a series of individual bandeaux result,

The bandeau thus produced is not only highly artistic and delicate, but is equally 80 serviceable and durable and fits on to the Figure 1.

By my novel method, hereinabove described, the cost of producing the bandeau is greatly reduced, as compared to the cost of producing other bandeaux of like quality, by other methods.

The particular stitch used in the formation Y of the fabric 4 may be vvaried to suit the particular design desired. Thus too, the fabric may be knitted more loosely or more tightly as may be desired, with large mesh or small mesh. The essential attribute of the present invention is the knitting into the two edges of the open mesh fabric, a pair of elastic strands, in such fashion that they become encased in said edges, and when the fabric is gathered at suitable intervals and cut, a

bandeau results with the rubber or elastic 10 strands forming part of the entire peripheral ed e of the finished bandeau.

am aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof, and I therefore desire the present embodiments to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being had to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the patent.

Having thus described my invention, what I hereby claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

A bandeau comprising a body of open mesh knitted fabric, having a generally tubelike, knitted selvage edge extending around the entire periphery thereof, and a pair of juxtaposed, elastic strands encased within and n extending through the two halves respectively of said tube-like, knitted peripheral selvage edge, having their juxtaposed ends secured to each other, so as to gather thevopen mesh knitted fabric equally, front and back,

I 1nd so as to form a continuous elastic edge throughout the-periphery of the bandeau.

2. A bandeau comprising a body formed of fiat-knitted, open-mesh fabric, having a generally tube-like, knitted selvage edge extendn-g around the entire periphery thereof, and a pair of juxtaposed elastic strands encased within said generally tube-like, knitted peripheral selvage edge durin the original knitting of said open-mesh fa ric in the fiat 85 zondition; said elastic strands extending through the two halves respectively of said generally tube-like, knitted peripheral selvage edge and having their juxtaposed ends secured to each other so as to gather the iiat- 40 lxnitted, open-mash fabric equally at two opposed zones and so as to form a continuous elastic edge throughout the periphery of the finished bandeau.
