(Cl. 132-49) This invention relates to hairnets, and more particularly to a novel net adapted to hold and retain the curls of modern coiffures at the sides and back of the head below the crown, as when the wearer is working or sleeping.
As described in my prior patent, No. 2,142,201, such nets are generally woven on conventional net looms, the hairnet there shown having elongated elastic strands woven into the open meshes of the net at the edge and across the crown thereof. These hairnets have been very successful in use, particularly in connection with the upswept hair styling or massed curles on top of the head. However, changes in hair styling, especially where curls are massed at the sides and back of the head, require protection of a kind not afforded by the hairnet of my prior patent.
A primary object of the present invention is to devise a hairnet particularly adapted to retain and compress curls massed at the sides and back of the wearers head, said net comprising a non-resilient crown portion entirely free from elastic strands, to accommodate positioning of the net on the head.
A more specific object of the invention is to provide an elastic band portion characterized by a plurality of closely spaced elastic strands extending lengthwise of the net and woven into the meshes thereof along an area below the elastic-free crown portion of the net.
Another object of the invention is to devise a hairnet which is more comfortable to wear due to the provision of a cnshionlike border in the form of a strip of closelywoven, closed mesh having a single elastic strand woven into said mesh at the edge of said strip remote from the elastic-free crown portion.
Yet another object of the invention is to weave a net such as above described with the elastic strands under tension and the border substantially straight and flat, whereupon when the net is cut into segments, the ends of which are bunched and tied to form individual hairnets, the border is knurled or wrinkled in the contracted state of the net when the latter is off the wearers head. Thus, when the net is applied to the head, tension is restored to the elastic strands which hold the net snugly in position, and under these conditions, the border is fiat and smooth, to afford comfortable contact with the wearers head.
A further object of the invention is to devise a hairnet wherein the crown portion thereof is woven in the form of large open meshes and wherein the border is woven continuously with said meshes and is woven in the form of small closed meshes to afford a sturdy, durable border which affords increased life in service and is comfortable to wear and adjust on the forehead, the elastic band portion of the net being defined by an area of the open mesh below the crown portion of the net, and said band portion comprising a plurality of elastic strands woven into the mesh in said area.
The foregoing and other advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following specification and the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is'a perspective view of the novel net on a wearers head;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan view of a segment of the novel net in contracted position;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the net in fully expanded position, as in Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 shows the net in expanded position off the head of the wearer.
Describing the invention in detail, the novel hairnet is woven on a conventional loom to form a continuous strip of netting such as that generally designated 2 in Figs. 2 and 3. The strip is then cut into segments, and the ends of each segment are bunched and tied as at 4 to define a hairnet, as disclosed in my prior patent.
According to the invention, the novel hairnet comprises three segments or portions, namely, a crown portion 6, an elastic band or resilient portion 8, and a border 10.
The crown portion 6 is woven in the form of relatively large open meshes which are entirely free of elastic strands, to accommodate straight hair on the top of the wearers head, as is common in modern hair styles. Thus the crown portion 6 is entirely non-resilient, which facilitates positioning of the net on the wearers head and facilitates adjustment of the net by moving the border 10' and band portion 8 upwardly and downwardly on the forehead.
The elastic band portion 8 is defined by a plurality of closely spaced resilient strands 12 woven into the large open meshes of the hairnet and defining the lower edge portion of the crown portion 6 thereof. These strands 12 extend lengthwise of the net and are tied at the ends thereof as above-mentioned, at 4. Thus it will be understood that the band portion 8 is particularly adapted to retain and compress curls massed at the sides and back of the wearers head below the crown thereof as in modern coiffures wherein the hair is frequently so arranged. The elastic-free crown portion 6, in combination with the band portion 8 facilitates adjustment of the net upwardly and downwardly on the head to accommodate the net to the location of the curls in the particular coilfure. Furthermore, the elastic-free crown portion 6 insures that the net will not be pulled by its own elasticity from the adjusted position selected by the wearer.
The border 10, as best seen in Figs. 2 and 3, is woven in the form of substantially closed meshes which are much smaller than those of the crown portion 6 and band portion 8; and, according to the invention, it has been discovered that the closed meshes of the border 10 afford a compact, soft strip of cushionlike material which is more comfortable on the wearers head than prior art nets.
The lower edge of the border, or, in other words, the edge thereof remote from the crown portion 6 of the net, is afforded resiliency, preferably by a single strand 14 of resilient material woven into the border meshes, as best seen in Figs. 2 and 3. As shown in Fig. 3, the netting is stretched to place the strands 12 and 14 under tension, with the border 10 fiat and smooth when the netting is woven and cut into segments, as above described. Each segment is then bunched and tied at 4, with the segment contracted and the border 10 wrinkled or knurled, as seen in Fig. 2. Thus, when the completed hairnet is applied to the wearers head, with the strands 12 and 14 under tension, the border 10 is again smooth and unwrinkled, as shown in Fig. l, to afford a cushioned, comfortable fit on the head.
It will be understood that the novel hairnet not only affords an attractive appearance but is stronger and more vision of the border 10. The novel hairnet also accom modates adjustment to the position of hair massed below the crown portion 6 because of its elastic-free construction, and the band portion 8 retains and compresses such massed hair as the wearer works or sleeps, Without any tendency for the band portion to be pulled from its adjusted position on the head, as might occur with such a coiffure if the crown portion 6 or any part thereof were resilient.
While the present invention has been explained and described with reference to specific embodiments of structure, it will be understood, nevertheless, that numerous modifications and variations are susceptible of being incorporated without departure from the essential spirit or scope thereof. Accordingly, it is not intended for an understanding of this invention to be limited by the foregoing description nor by the illustrations in the annexed drawings, except as indicated in the hereinafter appended claims.
What is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
1. A hair net comprising a segment of woven netting, said segment being bunched at its ends to define a headshaped structure comprising a unitary one piece structure formed with a crown portion having relatively large open meshes and being substantially non-resilient, an elastic band portion connected to said crown portion and comprising a plurality of elastic threads extending through said open meshes lengthwise of said net, a border connected to the edge of said band portion remote from said crown portion, said border comprising relatively small finer meshes woven continuously with said open meshes and defining a cushionlike strip of material around the open side of the net, and resilient means at the edge of said border remote from said band, said resilient means comprising an elastic thread woven into said relatively finer meshes.
2. A hair net comprising a single segment of woven netting bunched at its ends and comprising an open mesh, substantially non-resilient crown portion, a finer mesh, cushionlike border, a plurality of closely spaced elastic threads woven into the open mesh to define an elastic band portion between the crown portion and border, and
4 an elastic thread woven into the finer mesh at the edge of said border remote from said crown portion.
3. A hair net comprising an open mesh, elastic-free crown portion, a plurality of substantially parallel elastic threads woven into an area of said open mesh defining the lower edge portion of said crown portion, said threads providing an elastic band portion, and a finer mesh border woven continuously with said open mesh at the lower edge thereof.
4. A hair net comprising a single segment of netting bunched and tied at the ends of said segment, said net comprising ,a substantially elastic-free crown portion formed of relatively open mesh, a border formed of finer mesh, a plurality of substantially parallel elastic threads woven into the open mesh at an area thereof adjoining the closed mesh to define an elastic band portion between the crown portion and border, and at least one elastic thread woven into the closed mesh at the edge of said border remote from the band portion, said border being knurled by contraction of said last-mentioned thread when the net is oil a wearers head.
5. A method of making hair nets comprising weaving a netting having open mesh and a closed mesh border with a plurality of substantially parallel, closely-spaced elastic strands woven under tension into the open mesh adjoining said border and at least one elastic strand woven under tension into the closed mesh at the edge of the border remote from the open mesh, said border being substantially fiat and smooth, then, cutting said netting into segments and releasing the tension on said strands, and then bunching the ends of each segment and tying said ends to form a hair net, with the tension on said strands released so that said border is knurled, whereby when said hair net is applied to a wearers head with the strands under tension therearound said border,
fits smoothly, without wrinkles, around the head.
