Patent ed May :15, 1928.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD C. IAGAN, OI IIDDLETOWIT, CONNEOTIOUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE RUSSELL WAG-DURING COIPANY, OF HIDDIJETOWN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION 01' ELASTIC FABRIC.
Application filed 11 5111 10, 1926. Serial in. 101,195.
This invention relates to a fabric that is designed for attachment to various parts of garments of various sorts, for the urpose of causing the garment to snugly fitt e body among others, is the provision'of a fabric that may be readily attached to a garment in a neat and efiicient'manner and with little trouble and that when so attached will thorou hly effect its purpose. I
ne form of fabric embodying my invention and in the construction and use of which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings,'in which'- Figure 1 is a side View of a garment, as lumberjack, and embodying m invention.
Figure 2 is a face view 0 a piece of a len th of fabric embodying my invention.
igure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, but
with the fabric stretched and in condition for attachment to another piece of fabric.
It has heretofore been common practice to provide certain portions of arments, as the necks, bottoms, and cufis 0% sweaters, lumberjacks, and also otherportions of other garments, with means for causin the garment to quite closely fit or hug t e body or limb, this 'eifect being produced in the weaving of thelfabric, but in garments ada ted for many, uses it is desirable that the Earments shall fit or hug the body or limb closer than is possible with a fabric formed by weaving and composed only of the threads or material making up the body of such fabric. provided with an elastic fabric, that is, a fabric having special means for creating an elasticity therein, as by means of incorporating strips of rubber within the woven-fabric, and it is the purpose of the present invention to produce as an article of manufacture Such garments have, therefore, been and the wrist .of the sleeves being provided with my improved elastic fabric 7.
This fabric may be roduced inovarious ways and it comprises a ody 8 that is elastic an that is intended to be stretched endwise,
" is in its normal condition, as shown in Fig-' ure 2, the border 9 will be gathered and have the ap earance of fullness.
In t e preferred form of construction, and as embodied in the fabric shown herein, the elastic strands are incorporated with the warp, and the weft or fillingrthreads are extendedto the ed e of the border 9, the warp embodied in the order being devoid of classtic strands. In thus producing the fabric the elastic strands are placed under tension during the weaving operation.
This fabric will be found of especial ad vantage in attaching it to another piece of fabric as embodied in a garment or other:
wise, in that the. elastic fabric ,maybe stretched to its fullest extent to remove all of the gathers from the border 9 and thelatter bein then sewed in place a particularly neat an effective operation will be the result, and the elastic being then permitted to assume its normal condition the edge of'the garment or piece of fabric will be in a condition to nicely and snugly fit the part to which it is intended to be applied.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention to ther with the fabric which I now consi or to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have itunderstood that the fabric shown is only illustrative and that the invention may be carried out by other means set out.
I claim- 1. In an elastic garment'band of the character described, a strip of woven fabric and applied to uses other than those above having spaced series of elastic elements extending lengthwise of the strip with one series of elastic elements contiguous with one edge of the strip, and the series of elastic elements adjacent the other ed e of the strip being set inwardly from sai edge to produce an edge rufileon the strip when the elastic elements are contracted, the free edge of said ruffle being adapted for attachment to the garment without materially affecting the form or size of the garment.
2. In an elastic band of the character de scribed adapted for attachment to a cufi or waist port-ion of a garment, a strip of woven fabric having spaced series of elastic ele- RICHARD C. FAGAN.
