The present invention relates to a tape or band for forming seams between two fabric sections in a garment or the like, and, more particularly, to a tape or band for forming resilient or elastic seams, and to the method for forming such seams.
Garments, particularly undergarments, and..
especially ladies undergarments and lingerie, which are made of thin, delicate fabrics, frequently tear at or near the seams by the tearing or pulling out of the fabric threads, particularly at points of greater stress during wear. Such garments or articles, because they are generally snug fitting and made of clinging material, also become displaced and disarranged on the body of by the movement of the body and do not return to their original, proper position, to the discomfort of the wearer and to the detriment of the wearers appearance and of the durability of the garment or like article.
It is an object, therefore, of the present invention to provide means for elastically connecting the edges of adjacent fabric sections of a garment or the like, to thereby eliminate the ltendency of the fabric to tear or pull out.
It is also an object of the present invention to provide means for elastically connecting adjacent fabric sections of a garment or similar article, to thereby reduce the tendency of the garment to shift on the body with the movement of the body, thereby enhancing the neatness of the wearer and the strength and durability of the garment or article.
t is another object of the present invention 'to provide elastic seam forming means which are neat and compact and will not materially add to the bulk of the garment or the like.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide elastic seam forming means which are simple and easy to use and to attach to the fabric.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide elastic seam forming means which are durable and are economical to produce as well as economical to use and will not materially add to the cost of the garment or similar article.
The foregoing and other advantages and superiorities of the elastic seam forming means of the present invention will become more readily apparent from the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing. It is to be understood, however, that such embodiment is shown by way of illustration only, to make the principles and practice of the invention more i readily comprehensible to those skilled in the art, and without any intent of limiting the invention to the specific details therein shown.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged, plan view of an elastic seam forming 'band of the present invention. shown in normal state;
Fig. 2 isa similar View of the same, shown in stretched or extended position; y
Fig. 3 is a magnified, fragmentary view of the band shown in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view, in perspective, of a garment having elastic seams formed with the seam band of the present invention.
Referring more specifically to the accompanying drawings, the seam band of the invention, generally designated as I0, comprises a pair of preferably flat fabric strips or tapes, Il, arranged closely, edge to edge, parallel to one an other.
The tapes Ii may be woven, braided or knitted of thin threads of any desired and suitable natural or artificial yarn or threads, suiliciently loosely to be slightly elastic longitudinally and yet sufliciently closely and tightly to be suitable for receiving and holding a line of stitching.
The tapes Il have their juxtaposed longitudinal edges elastically connected to one another by elastic elements so arranged as to exert a substantially lateral elasticity. Such elastic elements may comprise a pair of elastic threads or yarns i2, each of which may consist of a rubber or latex core i3 and a cotton or similar thread winding I4, as conventionally prevails in the art.
Each of the elastic threads i2 is intermittently interwoven or interbraided into the edges of opposed tapes li, alternately from one tape to the other; lthe interengaged portions of the two elastic yarns i2 facing one another and their exposed, connecting portions i5 crossing one another, preferably, at a slight angle to the horizontal axis of the band ill.
It will be readily apparent that the band I 0 thus formed is transversely elastic so that the tapes il of which it is composed, may be elastically separated from one another and will return to their original position when released.
The use of the band l0 for the formation of seams, each tape il, thereof, may be separately and individually secured, as by a line of stitching i8, to the edge il of one of a pair of juxtaposed fabric sections lB. Preferably, such edges il may be folded or doubled over before being sewn to the tape li, in the conventional manner.
This completes the description of the seam ot the invention herein set forth, and without theuse ot any inventive ingenuity. 4. A seam band of the character described, consisting oi a unitary band comprising spaced, continuous, relatively inelastic fabric side sections and an elastic center section, said center n section consisting oi.' a pair of elastic threads,
each of said threads having intermittent portions interengaged alternately in each of the facing edges of the said two side sections and intermediate portions arranged at an angle to said edges to provide lateral and longitudinal elasticity between said side sections, the interengaged portions of said elastic threads being opposed to one another and their connecting portions crossing one another.
