- Curve rails are subject to increased wear and tear and fatigue damage, such as "shelling” (edge breakouts) and “headchecking” (contact fatigue cracks). Both types of damage adversely affect the driving behavior of the trains and the durability of the superstructure. They lead to premature failure and expansion of the rails and can even develop into cross breaks. With the introduction and improvement of wheel flange lubrication, rail wear has decreased and susceptibility to fatigue damage has increased.
