- the object of the present invention is to produce a new machine of a simplified construction, capable of ensuring the intaglio printing, and in a single pass, of valuable paper having a finely engraved multicolored security background, and a deeply engraved main drawing; in this machine, the adjustment of the register between the elements inking the safety background and the main design is greatly simplified.
- the same areas inked on the collector-inking cylinder always come into contact exactly with the same areas of the same engraved plate; on the other hand, the diameter of the plate cylinder and the collector-inking cylinder are relatively large since the plate cylinder must generally carry at least two engraved printing plates, preferably three or four engraved plates. For a plate cylinder carrying three plates, the diameter is for example 840 mm. Thanks to the large diameter of these two cylinders, the contact strip for good inking can be obtained with a lower compression force than with a smaller diameter collector-inking cylinder, and moreover, separation of the contact areas immediately after ink transfer is not as abrupt as with a collector cylinder - smaller ink pad.
- the collector-inking cylinder allows not only to correctly and completely fill the fine sizes, representing the safety background, but also the deeper sizes representing the main design, and even, as we have seen, deep sizes up to 'at 250 to 300 ⁇ , this representing a depth almost twice greater than that generally used so far during the direct inking of the main drawings. It seems that this surprising advantage is due to the fact that during the operation, a sort of ink relief is formed on the periphery of the collector-inking cylinder which is sufficient to fill the deepest sizes and which is always renewed by inking with the color selector cylinders. We had always been convinced until now that, to obtain a correct filling of the deep sizes, it was absolutely necessary to have an ink roller which directly touches the plate with a considerable pressure. This prejudice could be overcome by the invention.
- the machine shown comprises a printing cylinder 3, a plate cylinder 4 which cooperates with it and which has the same diameter as it, and a collector-inking cylinder 5 in contact with the plate cylinder 4.
- the plate cylinder 4 is provided with several engraved printing plates, regularly distributed. In the case considered, it carries three plates and has a diameter of 840 mm.
- the collector-inking cylinder 5, which has an elastic surface, has the same diameter as the plate cylinder 4 and is, in the example under consideration, fitted like the printing cylinder 3, with three blankets.
- the collector-inking cylinder 5 and in contact therewith are mounted color selector cylinders 7, each being inked by its own inking device 8.

On this collector-inking cylinder 5 are transferred all the different colors for the complete inking of the engraved plates. This is why it cooperates with as many color selector cylinders 7 as there are different colors.
- the collector-inking cylinder 5 cooperates with four color selector cylinders 7 the surface of which is made of hard material, for example plastic, metal or hard rubber, each selector cylinder being sectioned so to present areas in relief whose contours correspond exactly to those of the surfaces to be printed in the respective color. These raised areas are obtained by any known means, for example by laser cutting.
- the surface of the color selector cylinders is hard, there is no limit as to the fineness of the design that one wants to obtain. It is even possible to create a safety background with not only very fine lines, but also dots, which was previously impracticable.
- Each color selector cylinder 7 is associated with an inking device 8 comprising the inkwell proper and the color transfer rollers.
- the lower inking device in order to make it more convenient for the user, further comprises two intermediate transfer rollers 8b and 8c between the inkwell cylinder 8a and the rollers 8d. All the inking devices 8 with the rollers are installed in a mobile inking carriage 9 which can be separated from the main frame 6, this withdrawal position is indicated in phantom in the figure.
- the collector-inking cylinder 5 and the color selector cylinders are installed in a separate mobile carriage, the mobile inking carriage 9 can of course be separated from the latter.
- the ratio between the diameters of the color selector cylinders 7 and the collector-inking cylinder 5 is 1: 3.
- the sheet-shaped paper is brought to the machine by a sheet feeder 1 and a transfer cylinder 2 which gives the sheets to the printing cylinder 3.
- the paper held on this cylinder by clamps, passes between this cylinder and the plate cylinder 4 where it receives the impression, and it is then transported by another transfer cylinder 12 on a transport device 13.
- the procedure is as follows: one of the selector cylinders 7 not yet sectioned is mounted on the machine; then the printing plate is mounted on the plate cylinder 4 and ink and wiped; its image is then transferred, via the collector-inking cylinder 5, to the selector cylinder 7, so that the image of the plate remains printed on this cylinder which has not yet been cut.
- the selector cylinder 7 is then removed from the machine and the image of the plate is used to cut the surface by any suitable means.
- the image of the plate serves as a basis for coordinates to be introduced into the laser machine so that the cut perfectly follows the design in register with the plate.
- the same operation is naturally repeated for the other selector cylinders 7 representing the other colors. Under these conditions, we arrive at an automatic register of the inking of the security background and the main design.
- the arrangement of the machine is preferably such that the line connecting the axes of the printing cylinder 3 and the plate cylinder 4 is perpendicular to the line connecting the axes of the plate cylinder 4 and collec cylinder teur-inker 5 and that the printing cylinder 3 is located at least approximately vertically above the plate cylinder 4. Under these conditions, even if the plate cylinder were to yield to the bending of a few fractions of millimeters, due at the great pressure necessary for intaglio printing, this would in no way interfere with the collector-inking cylinder 5.
- collector-inking cylinder 5 instead of having individual blankets, is provided with a flexible, continuous and smooth surface, especially if it is a spool printing machine.
- the diameter of the collector-inking cylinder 5 has a diameter equal to twice, even three times, the diameter of the plate cylinder 4, if a reduced dimension of the latter allows, for practical reasons, a such size of the collector-inking cylinder 5. This would give even more room to install a greater number of color-selecting cylinders, with their inking device.
- the number of blankets on the collector-inking cylinder 5 is twice, respectively three times, the number of plates on the plate cylinder 4.
- the invention is not limited to the embodiment which has just been written, but also covers different embodiments in particular as regards the number of printing plates and the number of colors printed.
