  • the liquid metal is supplied, according to one of the well-known methods, in the casting space delimited, on the one hand, by the part of the walls of the cylinders situated above the neck and, on the other hand , by the shutter crosses located at the edges of the cylinders and in sealed contact with said edges. It is clear that the closure walls being fixed and the walls of the cylinders movable, a minimum functional clearance must be observed between them to avoid intense friction and the wear which would result therefrom. As a result, the seal cannot be absolute and infiltration of liquid metal may occur. Reducing the risk of infiltration is in particular one of the aims of the present invention.

These surfaces are therefore portions of cylindrical surface having the same curvature as the cylinders, and extend down to the level of the neck 5.
  • the front surface 63 is flat and slightly inclined relative to the vertical to form a draft.
  • the draft allows, during casting, the lateral expansion of the product during solidification which can occur by the rolling effect of the rotating cylinders.
  • the width of the lateral surfaces 64 increases from top to bottom up to the level of the neck.
  • the front surface 63 can also be vertical, the width of the side surfaces 64 being then constant, or even slightly curved.
  • the front surface 63 is the surface of a front part 65 added in a hollow machining performed in the plate 61, this front part being made of a thermally insulating refractory material.
  • the side surfaces 64 are formed by the surfaces of the side parts 66 made of a metallic material and preferably cooled, for example by internal circulation of a cooling fluid.

  • the surfaces of these lateral parts can advantageously be lubricated; for example means may be provided for injecting a lubricating fluid at the joint plane between cylinders and closure walls, which may have the additional advantage of reducing friction, and therefore wear, between these elements.
  • the lateral surfaces 64 may also not be precisely in alignment with the cylindrical surfaces of the cylinders but form with them an angle different from 180 °, such as the obtuse angle ⁇ shown in the diagrams of FIG. 9
  • the trace of said lateral surface in a horizontal plane forms an obtuse angle with the generator, contained in the same plane, of the adjacent movable wall.
  • This angle can be constant over the height of the recess and in this case the cast product will have a thinner edge than the central part of the product.
