Definitions

  • coils made of a strip of paper of standard width rolled in successive turns are used. These coils must be installed one after the other in a specific location on the machine, so as to run smoothly during production. They are delivered in the form of closed coils, that is to say that the end of the strip is glued to the previous turn.
  • the periphery of the reel is generally encircled by a more or less thick cardboard ring preventing the unwanted unwinding of the strip.
  • the inner end of the strip is generally supported on a ring of predetermined diameter, itself in Bristol or plastic. When the coil is put in place, this ring is engaged on a support mandrel that is part of the machine and driven by a motor.
  • the aim of the present invention is to mechanize the operations to be carried out on each reel from the placement on the mandrel until the moment when the front end of the strip is gripped by a conveyor which then ensures its engagement in the machine, and this by avoiding the faults of the devices already known. Note that the engagement of the strip in the machine is not part of the invention.
  • This operation can take place according to the methods described in patent applications EP-A- 0 318 427 (published on 31.05.89 with priority of 12.11.87, CH 4413/87, EP 888 107 48.9), USSN 268975 or according to d '' other modalities.
  • the main components of the device are visible in fig. 1. They firstly comprise a mandrel support 1 on which is mounted a mandrel 2 carrying a closed coil 3 previously put in place. A drive roller 4 and a knife 5 are mounted on a carriage 6 movable on a slide 7, so that the roller 4 can bear against the coil 3 and rotate it around the axis of the mandrel 2. A suction and evacuation device 8 is arranged in the vicinity of the slide 7 so as to be able to evacuate the segments of band and of links cut from the coil and spread out the front end of the band. Thus, the latter may be caused to spread over a presentation member 9. The latter is itself mobile, as will be seen below and ensures the attachment of a surface portion of the strip to a receiving member 10 forming part of a transporter.
  • the conveyor cooperates with a connection device 11 which is shown on a reduced scale in FIG. 1 and which is of the type described in, the patent application EP-A-318427 cited above.
  • the mandrel 2 is mounted on the support 1, so that it can be moved, once the connection has been made and come to take the place of the mandrel 2a.
  • the different stages of the process take place as follows (see figs 2,3 and 4).
  • the roller 4 and the knife 5 are in positions remote from the mandrel 2.
  • the closed coil 3 is engaged on the mandrel.
  • a support blade 12 of arcuate shape, controlled by a jack 13 rests on it and the roller 4 is brought into contact with the peripheral surface of the coil.
  • the knife 5 is then moved in a direction parallel to the axis of the spool so that the cutting edge 14a of the blade 14, placed radially, cuts the closure strip 3a of the spool 3, in cardboard, and some one of the outer turns of the strip of paper 3c wound in successive turns to form the coil 3. This done, the knife 5 is returned to its initial retracted position.
  • the latter is then driven in rotation while the support blade 12 slightly deviates, and the coil 3 starts to rotate slowly in the direction of arrow 3d.
  • the suction device 8 is turned on. Its inlet 15 is located in the immediate vicinity of the roller 4 at the location that the cutting edge 14a has just left, so that the end of the scraps 3b is sucked into the conduit 16, 17, formed by a bent tube 16 pivotally mounted on a fitting 18 coaxial with the elbow, and of a telescopic extension 17 whose free end constitutes the inlet 15.
  • the fitting 18 is connected to a discharge and to a suction blower, so that the falls are immediately evacuated.
  • the anterior end 3c (fig. 4) of the last undivided turn of the strip forming the coil 3 also engages, under the effect of the suction current in the inlet 15 of the device 8 and when the falls 3b have been evacuated, it has penetrated a few decimeters into the extension 17. Thus, the end 3c of the strip is spread out so that it can be grasped with precision.
  • the following operation consists in depositing the strip on a presentation member 9 which is then in the retracted position as will be seen more far.
  • the telescopic extension 17 is moved inside the tube 16 by means of the jack 20, which frees the location of the member 9.
  • the latter advances in the active position while the tube 16 is driven so as to pivot in the connector 18 under the action of another cylinder 21, the cylinder of which is articulated on the general frame of the device. This has the effect of pressing the strip segment 3c on the member 9 which has reached its advanced position.
  • the squeegee 10 integral with the conveyor can be placed immediately above the flat upper surface of the presentation member 9 (fig. 1).
  • the squeegee 10 has a notch 22 which is located opposite a slot of the member 9 in which is embedded a cutter blade 23, controlled by a jack 24.
  • the last operation of the method therefore consists in actuating the jack 24.
  • the blade 23 cuts the strip 3c in such a way that its end is, with sufficient precision, opposite the notch 22; this also has the effect of freeing the end of the segment 3c already previously introduced by suction into the duct 16, 17 of the suction device 8.
  • the squeegee 10 rises from the flat upper surface of the presentation member 9, to allow the presentation member 9 to return to its initial position.
  • the suction is then cut off.
  • the suction device 8 is returned to the position of FIG. 1.
  • the carrier can therefore be controlled and bring the front edge of the strip 3c exactly to the desired location for its connection to the rear end of a strip already engaged in the machine for manufacturing cigarettes or filters.
  • Figs. 5 to 9 show in more detail the different elements of the device and explain the process.
  • the mandrels 2, 2a, etc., intended to support the coils 3 are mounted on a horizontal slide 1. These elements are visible in FIG. 1 and will not be described in more detail here.
  • Figs. 5 and 6 show the slide 7 carrying the carriage 6 on which are mounted, on the one hand, the roller 4 and, on the other hand, the knife 5.
  • the slide 7 is fixed against a vertical wall 30 supporting the whole of the device.
  • the slide 7 comprises a guide rail 25 which extends obliquely upwards and on which the base 26 of the carriage 6 is mounted.
  • This base has in particular an axis 27 supporting the roller 4, which is coupled to a shaft drive unit itself attached to the motor rotor 28.
  • the device described comprises a jack 60 (fig. 5), the cylinder of which is fixed to a console 29, fixed itself to the vertical wall 30 carrying the slide 7.
  • the movable part of the jack 60 comprises a rod 31 which is rigidly connected to the base 26.
  • the jack being oriented parallel to the slide 7, its control, in one direction or in the other, moves the carriage 6 away from or closer to the periphery of a coil 3 mounted on the mandrel 2.
  • the roller 4 has a cylindrical shape and its axial length is 10 mm greater than the width of the paper strips 3c constituting the coils 3.
  • the desired detector elements are pr seen on the carriage 6 for controlling operation of the actuator 60. When it receives a command commanding a movement of the carriage 6 from a position remote from a reel towards this coil, movement is interrupted when the roller 4 presses against the periphery of the coil with the required pressure. As we have seen previously, the coil is then still filled with its closing surround.
  • the knife 5 is mounted on the base 26.
  • the latter has a console-shaped end 26a (FIGS. 6 and 7) to which the cylinder of a jack 32 is fixed, oriented perpendicular to the slide 7
  • the rod 33 of this jack carries a cutting block 34 consisting of a part in the shape of a parallelepiped provided with a groove in which are mounted two coaxial ball bearing rollers 35 and 36 and, between these rollers, the blade 14 already mentioned.
  • This blade is octagonal in shape.
  • These elements are fixed in the block 34 by means of a screw 38 and means are provided for adjusting the position of the blade 14, so that one of its rectilinear edges 14a (fig. 7) is oriented parallel to the axis of the coil 3 and extends in projection from a predetermined distance beyond the periphery of the rollers 35 and 36.
  • the block 34 has a bore 40 in which is forcefully engaged a guide rod 41 which slides in a sleeve-shaped part 42 secured to the console 26a .
  • the blade 14 will be adjusted so that during this movement, the peripheral belt which closes the coil 3 in the state of presentation is cut over its entire thickness and that in addition a certain number of turns of the paper strip are cut.
  • the position of the blade 14 can be adjusted to within a few tenths of a millimeter, so that the number of turns cut can be determined with fairly great precision and in fact comprises around five to six turns.
  • the exact position of the blade 14, at the time of the cutting movement, is also visible in FIG. 5 where it can be seen that the periphery of the coil 3 is cut radially, the block 34 being guided by the sleeve 42.
  • the suction device 8 includes the outer end of the tubular extension 17 and the suction tube 16 in which this tubular extension is engaged.
  • the tube 16 has, in the vicinity of its end, a slot 43 into which the lateral finger 44 which can be engaged fixed on the side of the tubular extension 17 can engage.
  • This lateral finger is integral with a rod 45 which is itself connected to the piston of the jack 20 fixed laterally against the tubular element 16.
  • the suction device 8 can move between two extreme positions by rotation about the axis of the connector 18 and these two positions are visible in FIG. . 5. The angle they determine between them is a few degrees.
  • the axis of the tubular segment 16 is parallel to the slide 7 and, by actuation of the jack 20, the opening 15 of the tubular extension 17 can be brought into immediate proximity to the periphery of the coil 3.
  • the block 34 is withdrawn in the initial position shown in FIG. 7, after which the opening of the tubular extension 17 is brought into a position which is immediately below the roller 4. This is when the suction is started and the roller 4 is driven by the excitation of its motor 28. It is understood that all the cut segments move in the direction from left to right in FIG. 5 and that their end sucked by the device 8 enters the inlet 15 where these segments are discharged to a discharge.
  • FIGS. 5, 8 and 9. we see in particular a part of the wall 30 which has a circular opening 47 in which is fixed the disc 48 for supporting the assembly of the member 9.
  • This disc itself has a central opening in which is mounted a sleeve 49 supporting, on the one hand, a cylinder 50 and, on the other hand, two guide rods 51 and 52 which are mounted in positions parallel to the axis of the cylinder 50.
  • the rod 53 of the cylinder 50 is fixed to the presentation block 54 which is in turn fixed on the rods 51 and 52 which they slide in the sleeve 49.
  • the presentation block 54 has a central slot 55.
  • a small jack whose rod (fig. 9) carries a cutter blade .
  • This is the jack 24 mentioned above, the rod 57 of which carries and controls the cutter blade 23.
  • This blade has an oblique edge and is capable of sliding in the slot 55 when the jack 24 is actuated.
  • the presentation block 54 has an upper face 59 which is planar and which extends horizontally (FIG. 5).
  • this flat face 59 is extended in the direction of the coil 3 by an angle iron 37, folded at right angles and fixed on the side of the block 54 facing the coil 3 (fig. 5).
  • the space located above the presentation member 9 is free and the squeegee 10 of the transport member can be placed immediately above the block 54, so that the notch 22 is in the extension of the slot 55.
  • the jack 24 is controlled and the blade 23 cuts the strip 3c so that its front end is exactly at the edge of the slot 22 relative to the nozzle 10 In this way, there is a completely precise positioning of the end of the strip 3 with respect to the transport means which will ensure the connection of this strip with the preceding strip and its introduction into the cigarette-making machine.
  • the suction device is raised by control of the jack 21.
  • the presentation member 9 When the transport member has moved, the presentation member 9 is returned to its initial position. At the time of movement of the transport member 10, the roller 4 is returned to function, so as to rotate the reel 3 about its axis and to cut the tape at the desired rate.
  • the speed of rotation of this roller is regulated by the motor control 28. It can be controlled by the desired detector and regulating devices.
  • the carriage 6 can move along the slide 7 as the strip unwinds, so that the roller 4 continues to press on the periphery of the reel with the required pressure. However, during the unwinding of the reel, the function of the roller 4 becomes unnecessary and the unwinding of the strip can be adjusted simply by a brake acting on the mandrel 2. At this time, the carriage 6 can be withdrawn in its upper position. (fig.
  • the mandrel 2 can even be moved along the rail 1 to reach, for example, the position of the mandrel 2a, as shown in fig. 1. As a result, a new mandrel 2 can be brought to the location visible in FIG. 1. The device is then ready for the opening and introduction of a new reel, all these operations being able to take place automatically and mechanically.
  • all of the movable members which, apart from the roller 4, are driven by jacks, are provided with position or force detectors so that the automatic control device can control whether all the movements are executed regularly at the desired time, which ensures the sequences of the various operations as described above and the triggering of alarms or alarm signals in the event of malfunction.
