Definitions
- the invention relates to a method for operating an Otto engine with an unleaded liquid fuel containing an addition of 1 to 100, preferably 5 to 20, ppm by weight of ferrocene.
- Liquid hydrocarbon mixtures consisting essentially of gasoline and an organometallic compound from the group of dicyclopentadienyl iron (ferrocene) and gasoline-soluble derivatives, for reducing fuel consumption and exhaust gas pollution and for removing or reducing carbon deposits have been proposed, such mixtures also being the usual ones could contain additives of an anti-knock agent (see. DE-OS 25 02 307).
- the object of the present invention is to contribute to a reduction in fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions in a method of the type specified at the outset.
- the positive effects of adding ferrocene are achieved by adding ferrocene to the fuel in amounts of 1 to 100, preferably 5 to 20, ppm by weight of ferrocene. Ferrocene is given to the fuel in the amounts required according to the recommended concentration due to its good Solubility added with mixing directly. It is expedient to prepare a concentrate of ferrocene dissolved in liquid fuel (petrol), an alcohol, an ether, an aromatic solvent or mixtures thereof or the like and then to mix the required volume with the fuel to adjust the desired ferrocene concentration.
- liquid fuel petrol
- an alcohol an alcohol
- an ether an aromatic solvent or mixtures thereof or the like
- liquid fuel additized with ferrocene surprisingly gave the advantages described in more detail below when operating an Otto engine equipped with a regulated catalyst system under operating conditions in the field test.
- the standard vehicles used for the field tests were equipped with a regulated catalyst system, built on a monolithic carrier with a coating of catalytically active metals.
- a test program on a pressure-indicated 1-cylinder engine showed a reduction in the so-called cycle variations when operating with ferrocene-additive fuel. In terms of the operating behavior of full engines, it can be concluded that the engine runs more smoothly and better, as well as better options for an optimized combustion process.

Abstract
