Definitions

  • the invention relates to a device to be used when applying plaits in a curtain and when fastening a hanger to said curtain, said device comprising a base plate which can be mounted to the table top of a sewing machine in mutually parallel positions, on which base plate means are provided for picking up and temporary holding a hanger.
  • Such a device is known by DE-A-2,302,765.
  • a plait is formed in the curtain and the portions of the curtain which are laid onto each other, are sewn together.
  • a hanger is sewn to the curtain, said hanger being picked up and temporary held by a gripper being positioned completely outside the curtain so that also a part of the hanger will always extend outside the curtain.
  • the invention aims to raise these objections and to that end provides a device which is characterized in that the means for picking up and temporary holding a hanger is formed by a strip comprising plate shaped portions which are movable in respect of each other for clamping a mainly plate shaped hanger between these portions such that the plane of said strip substantially corresponds with that of the hanger, said hanger comprising a hook portion and a lip for being fixedly sewn to the curtain, said strip extending substantially parallel to the table top of the sewing machine, means being present to support said strip in such a way that it can be moved in its plane from a position for picking up a hanger to a place where said hanger is positioned above the curtain, such that a part of said curtain can be folded around the lip of said hanger, said means being executed such that by them said strip can be moved till the lip of said hanger is below the presser foot of the sewing machine and the lip can be sewn to both curtain portions lying under and on top of it.
  • a strip is used the thickness of which is not or hardly larger than the thickness of the hanger itself, said strip together with the hanger can be pressed onto a portion of the curtain and the curtain can be folded over the hanger, after which the hanger can be fixedly sewn to the curtain.
  • the means for moving the strip towards the presser foot of the sewing machine is executed such that the strip is moved in its plane in a direction transverse to the direction of sewing, such that the lip of the hanger present in the formed plait of the curtain is pressed fixedly into said plait.
  • the means supporting the strip serving for picking up a hanger is executed such that said strip is substantially moved in a plane present at such a height above the table top of the sewing machine that a curtain with maximum thickness can be positioned on said table top and that the strip can be pressed towards said table top, after being positioned above the curtain, together with the hanger so that it is engaged with the curtain, said engagement being maintained at least till the hanger taken up by said strip, is brought below the presser foot of the sewing machine.
  • the strip for picking up a hanger comprises an upper and a lower plate being connected to each other, and an intermediate plate being present between said two plates and carrying two gripper jaws extending outside the other plates and being executed in such a way that at least one of said gripper jaws is movable in respect of the other jaw.
  • the intermediate plate comprises two portions, to wit a foremost portion being pivotable in respect of a pin being fixedly connected in the upper and/or lower plate, said foremost portion carrying one of the gripper jaws and being provided with a hook cooperating with a hook of the rear portion of the intermediate plate, said portion being shiftable in longitudinal direction between the upper and the lower plate of the strip, said rear portion also carrying a gripper jaw such that when shifting the rear portion of the intermediate plate both gripper jaws will be moved towards each other or away from each other.
  • the adjustable mounting of the rear portion of the intermediate plate can be obtained because this rear portion is provided with longitudinal extending sleeves in which pins are present fixed in the upper and/or lower plate of the strip.
  • the rear portion of the intermediate plate can be moved forward by means of a cylinder working with pressurized medium, said cylinder being mounted to a support by which also the upper and lower plate of the strip are connected, the intermediate plate being biased towards its rear position by means of a spring.
  • the support carrying said strip can be brought upwards in respect of a guiding base by means of a cylinder working by pressurized medium and can be biased towards its lowest position by means of a spring. As explained above this lowest position is reached when the strip, together with a hanger, is brought above a curtain.
  • an adjustable stop can be present by which the highest position of the support is fixed. So when now thick curtain material has to be handled the adjustable stop will be set in such a way that the support carrying the strip will take nearly its highest position when it, together with a hanger, is moved over the curtain till the hanger is brought in its desired position above the curtain. When thinner material has to be handled the stop can be set in such a way that also then the strip moves closely above the curtain, naturally without coming in contact with the curtain.
  • the guiding base is movable supported by a guiding plate in longitudinal direction of the strip, said guiding plate, in its turn, being supported by a base plate which is fixedly mounted in respect of the sewing machine such that the guiding plate can be moved over the base plate transverse to the strip.
  • the strip is moved from its initial position transverse to its longitudinal direction towards a store room for hangers to take away the lower one of the stacked hangers after which the strip is returning to the related initial position to be moved from this position lengthwise, by means of a pressurized cylinder, till above the curtain sideways of the presser foot.
  • the strip will be biased towards the curtain and thereupon will be moved sideways to the presser foot of the sewing machine, in such a way that the lip of the hanger will be brought below this presser foot.
  • the strip After sewing the hanger in the curtain plait, as a whole or partly, the strip will release the hanger and will be moved away from the presser foot in transverse direction so that it, from the position it has reached, can return again to its initial position.
  • the guiding base is adjustable in longitudinal direction of the strip in respect of the guiding plate and is biased by two single working oppositely directed pressurized medium cylinders which in their pressurized end positions are locking the guiding base at a fixed place of the guiding plate.
  • the guiding base can move in both directions in respect of the guiding plate so that the strip can move together with the moving curtain below the presser foot of the sewing machine.
  • the guiding base is taking a fixed position in respect of the guiding plate so that the pressurized medium cylinder acting upon the guiding plate is locking the strip in its right position as seen in its longitudinal direction.
  • a stop is present against which the upper rim of the curtain can be laid before the strip together with the hanger picked up by it is brought above the curtain.
  • the stop is adjustable to wit in the longitudinal direction of the pick-up strip.
  • the stop preferably will be connected to the guiding base which is guiding the support connected to the strip in downward and upward direction.
  • the invention provides a hanger being suitable for using the device as described above, said hanger comprising a hook portion and a lip connected to it and extending substantially parallel to said hook portion and being executed thinner, said hanger being characterized in that the hook portion and the lip are forming one entirely whole and that in the hanger recesses are provided at two lengthwise spaced positions, in which recesses the gripper jaws of the strip can grip so that the strip and the hanger will be present substantially in the same plane.
  • the recesses are provided in the thickest portion of the hanger but will not extend over the whole thickness of it.
  • the connecting portion between the hook portion and the lip locally is having a thinner portion but nevertheless is continuously running through so that it is prevented that the lip connected to the curtain is torn loose from the hook portion in consequence of the forces exerted onto the lip.
  • the hanger according to the present invention will be executed from plastic so that the hanger can be sewn in the plait of a curtain by means of a standard industrial sewing machine.
  • the free longitudinal rim of the lip is made thicker than the portion of the lip which is directly connected to the hook.
  • the lower end of the slot of the hanger in which a curtain track roller or such like can be present is cut out towards the lip.
  • the device shown in the drawing comprises a base plate 1 which in a not shown way can be mounted to the table top 2 of a sewing machine 3 from which further only the presser foot 4 is shown.
  • the base plate 1 can be connected to the table top 2 in such a way, which is not indicated, that it can be brought in a given position in respect of the table top and in particular in respect of the presser foot 4.
  • guiding rods 7 are fixed by means of supports 5 and bolts 6.
  • supports 8 are shiftable which by means of bolts 9 are connected to a guiding plate 10.
  • On the guiding plate 10 one or more guiding rods 13 are mounted by means of supports 11 over which rods supports 14 are shiftable which are connected to the guiding base 16 by means of bolts 15.
  • the invention also relates to a method for applying the device described above, said method comprising the following steps:
  • the guiding base 16 comprises a foremost portion 17 which is connected to rods 18 which are shiftable received in the rear portion 19 of the guiding base 16.
  • the foremost portion 17 of the guiding base 16 is formed by a substantially U-shaped portion 20.
  • the upper leg 21 is carrying one or more pins 22 on which the support 23 is movable in vertical direction, said support 23 carrying the strip 24.
  • the strip 24 comprises the upper plate 25, the lower plate 26 and the intermediate plate 27.
  • the upper plate 25 is provided with a flanged portion 28 which by means of a stud 29, screwed into the support 23, and a nut 30 is fixed to the support 23.
  • the lower plate 26 is provided with a flanged portion 31 which by means of a not indicated screw also is fixed to the support 23.
  • the intermediate plate 27 comprises a foremost portion 32 and a rear portion 33.
  • the foremost portion 32 is pivotable around the pin 34 which is mounted in the upper plate 25 and/or the lower plate 26 of the strip 24.
  • This foremost portion 32 comprises the gripper jaw 35 and the hook 36, cooperating with a hook 37 of the rear portion 33 which is lengthwise movable between the upper plate 25 and the lower plate 26 by means of pins 38, connected to the upper and/or lower plate and extending through slotted holes in the rear portion 33.
  • This rear portion 33 comprises a gripper jaw 40.
  • Fig. 4 shows that position of the foremost portion 32 and the rear portion 33 in which the gripper jaws 35 and 40 respectively are spaced from each other over the maximum distance.
  • the gripper jaws 35 and 40 will move towards each other by the engaging hooks 36, 37 of the portions 32 and 33 respectively and the parts will take the position as this is indicated in Fig. 4 by dash-lines.
  • the single working air cylinder 45 is used for moving the rear portion 33 of the intermediate plate 25 of the strip 24, said cylinder being connected to the support 23 in a not further indicated way.
  • the support 23 can be moved upward and downward by means of the single working air cylinder 46 which in a way not further shown is connected to the forward portion 17 of the guiding base 16.
  • the distance over which the support 23 can be moved upwardly can be adjusted by means of the disc 47 which excentrically is supported in the point 48 and can be locked in the desired position.
  • the disc 47 In the position of the disc 47 shown in Fig. 3 the disc will make his smallest stroke so that in the highest position of the support 23 the strip 24 connected to this will be present at the smallest distance above the table top 2, see Fig. 2, of the sewing machine 3.
  • the spring 49 serves for pressing the support 23 positively downward, the other end of the spring 49 engaging the upper leg 21 of the foremost portion 17 of the guiding base 16.
  • the foremost portion 17 and the rear portion 19 of the guiding base 16 are fixedly coupled by means of the two single working air cylinders 50, see Fig. 1 and 2.
  • the air cylinders 50 are connected with the rear portion 19 of the guiding base 16 and in their end position are engaging lips 51, which are connected with the foremost portion 17 of the guiding base 16.
  • the guiding base 16 is shiftable along the guiding rods 13 by means of the double working air cylinders 52, see Fig. 2.
  • the guiding plate 10, on which the guiding base 16 is mounted, is shiftable along the rods 7 by means of two air cylinders 53 and 54, each taking care for a given tranverse movement, as afterwards will be explained.
  • the base plate 1 further carries a pin 54′ on which a support 55 is pivotally mounted, said support serving for supporting the store room 56 in which hangers 57 are present, see Fig. 5 and 6.
  • the store room 56 is, by not further indicated means, fixed in the desired position but can be pivoted away in respect of the pin 54′ when this is necessary e.g. for repair or maintenance of the sewing machine 3.
  • the foremost portion 17 of the guiding base 16 is provided with a stop element 58 consisting of the strip 59 and the guiding rod 60, which is shiftable in a not further indicated bore in the U-shaped portion 20 and can be locked in respect of this in the desired position by means of the set screw 61.
  • the rim of a curtain can be laid against the strip 59 so that a hanger 57 which is picked up between the gripper jaws 35 and 40 can come in the right position in respect of the rim of the curtain, so that all hooks are sewed to the curtain at the right distance of the rim of it. This distance can be varied to will by loosening the set screw 61, shifting the rod 60 and against fixing the set screw 61.
  • the hanger 57 comprises a hook 62 and a lip 63.
  • the hook 62 has a greater thickness than the lip 63 because the lip 63 has to be sewn to the curtain 64, shown in Fig. 6 with dash-lines, by means of stitches present at the place of the line 65.
  • the rim of the lip 63 is provided with a thickening 66 which at the one hand takes care that during injection moulding of the hanger the lip 63 will remain its flat shape while at the other hand during sewing a given force is exerted on the thickened edge 66 to press the lip 63 fixedly in the curtain plait.
  • recesses 67 are provided which, however, do not extend over the total thickness of the related portion so that an uninterrupted connection is present between the hook 62 and the lip 63.
  • the lower end 68 of the slot formed by the hook 62 is cut out towards the side of the lip 63 as in particular appears from Fig. 5. Further the hook 62 has a V-shaped portion 70 which is directed towards the recess 68.
  • a roller which is already present in the slot 69 will not easily be removed from the slot 69 because it remains engaged in the lower end 68 of the slot 69 and can only be removed from it when the V-shaped portion 70 of the hook 62 is bent somewhat outwardly.
  • the strip 24 is in the position as shown in Fig. 1.
  • the stop element 58 is clamped in the foremost portion 17 of the guiding base 16 by means of the set screw 61 and in a given position in respect of the strip 24.
  • the rear portion 33 of the intermediate plate 27 of the strip 24 is biased towards the position as this is shown in Fig. 4 with drawn lines so that also the foremost portion 32 will be present in the position as this is shown with drawn lines.
  • the guiding plate 10 is brought to the right so that the gripper jaws 35 and 40 are present sidewards of a hanger 57 positioned on the bottom of the store room 56. So at this place the store room is open in the direction of the hook 62 so that the hanger 57 can be withdrawn from the store room 56 in the direction of the arrow R, see Fig. 1.
  • the support 23 is moved upwardly by means of the air cylinder 46 and against the working of the spring 49 until the disc 47 is contacting the upper leg 21 of the U-shaped portion 17 of the guiding base 16.
  • the strip 24 and the hanger 57 taken up in it are positioned at a sufficient height above the table top 2 of the sewing machine so that they can be moved over the curtain 64 laid down on it, to wit to the position which in Fig. 1 is shown by dashed lines and is indicated with 24′.
  • This movement of the guiding base 16 takes place by means of the air cylinder 52.
  • the cylinders 50 are depressurized so that the foremost portion 17 of the guiding base 16 can move freely in respect of the rear portion 19 of the guiding base 16.
  • the air cylinder 45 is depressurized and the rear portion 33 of the intermediate plate 27 is brought back to its initial position by the spring 41 so that the gripper jaws 35 and 40 release the hanger 57.
  • the strip 24 is brought again to the position 24′, shown in Fig. 1, by means of the air cylinder 54 while at the same time the support 23, carrying the strip 24, is brought upwardly by means of the air cylinder 46 to come free of the curtain.
  • the strip 24 is brought back to the position as this is shown with drawn lines in Fig. 1 by means of the cylinder 52.
  • the air cylinders 50 are pressurized so that the portions 17 and 19 of the guiding base are again fixedly coupled with each other.
  • the strip 24 is again in the initial position as this is shown in Fig. 1 and the whole cycle can be repeated.
  • the succeeding actuations of the various portions can take place along electronic way.
  • a coupling can be present between these actuating means and the sewing machine so that the sewing machine can only work when the strip 24 with a hanger 57 in it is brought near the presser foot 4 of the sewing machine. In this way the fixing of a hanger to a curtain can be further automated and so made easier.
