Managt E Q i Parar PLAITED DRAPERY.
Application rueaauiie 1o, 192e. sei-iai No. 115,035.
My object, generally stated, is to simplify, i and greatly reduce the cost of, thev making of plaited draperies, especially in the matter of providing on' the draperies the necessary means whereby the draperies may be suspended, in the desired position, from the supporting rods therefor. i
Referring to the accompanying drawings:- l
Figure 1 is a broken view of one end of a. pole for supporting a drapery, the pole being shown as equipped with a draperyhanger, which in practice wo-uld be provided of a number correspondingwith the number` of plaits provided on the drapery. Figure 2 is a broken perspective view of the upper edge portion of a plaited drapery constructed in accordance with my invention. Figure 3 is a similar view showing the drapery in the course of producing one of the similar plaits; and Figure 4. a broken perspective view o-f a modification of my invention, the pole being shown by dott-ed lines. Y l
Referring first to Figure 1, which shows,
merely by way of example, one of the many forms of hanger devices in connection with which a drapery constructed 1n-v accordance with my invention may be used, the draperysupporting pole is represented at 5 and would be secured in any desirable way, across the window, or other opening, or area, at which the draperies are to extend. Mounted on the pole 5 are a series of drapery hangers, one only of which is shown, these hangers being provided of a number corresponding with the number of points at which the drapery is to be supported. The form of hanger shown comprises a pair of bars 6 connected together by a shaft 7 carrying rollers 8, at which the hanger rests upon the pole 5, the lower ends of the bars 6 being deected inwardly toward the center of the pole 5 and thence upwardly and outwardly as shown, at which portions the upwardly opening notches 9 are provided at opposite sides of the pole, the upper extremities of theV bars 6 containing upwardly opening notches 10. The notches 9 and 10 are provided for receiving the drapery-supporting devices carried by the draperies, and provided, as for example, of button form, to hold ythe draperies located at opposite sides of the pole, in the desired position in which the upper edges of the draperies extend above, and cover, the drapery hangers.
-pery would be supported on the pole, repreln the plaiting of the drapery, in accordance with the preferred'embodiment of my invention, the material from which the drapery is to be formed, is folded upon itself at intervals, corresponding' with the number of plaits to be formed, and pieces of tape, one Y of which is represented at 11, are inserted between the opposing portions of the folds,
yas forl example to the position shown in Fig.
3, and the folded portions of the drapery then stitched, as for example along the lines represented at 12, this stitching Vextending through the folded portions ofthe drapery and through the tape 11. `The stitching 12 70 is located remotely from thefolded edge portions 13 of the drapery, and serves not only to define the plait-forming portions of the' drapery andhold the plaitedportions in position, but also to hold the tape in place, the latter extending rearwardly beyond the plaits, shown. After; stitching the drapery as described, the folded portions bee yond the stitching are pressed down to the position shown in Fig. 2, to'form the plaits 80 as represented by the plait 11i in this figure.
It is intended that the drapery be supportedfrom the tape 11, and inaccordance with the showing in Figure l at two points thereon, as for example by the buttonsl S5 and 16 provided on the tape and adapted to hook into t-he notches 9. and 10 respectively in the hanger. The drapery may be supported from the tape in any other desirable way however. l
In practice it is preferred `that the tape be preliminarily prepared, as for example by securing the buttons 15 and 16 thereto, before assembly with the main portion of the drapery, as this malres for great economy and facilitates the production of the finished article. If desired the tape, with the buttons thereon, or otherwise preliminarily provided with supporting means, may be supplied to the manufacturers of draperies and in the manufacture of the draperies the tape be cut into the desired lengths for use.
Referring to the construction shown in Fig. 4, the tape 11, 'instead of being equipped withbuttons for co-operating with a hanger like that shown in Fig. 1, is provided with a ring, represented at 17, and-sewed bythe thread represented at18 to the free edge yof the tape 11. In this construction the drasented at 5, direct from the ring 17 at each plait 14, these rings, if desired., being secured to the tape 1l, preferably provided in long lengths, to be cut into pieces, before being sewed into the plait-forming portions.
It will be manifest from the foregoing that particularly by securing the tape 1l in place by the same stitching which defines the plaited portions, the labor involved in the producing of the plaited drapery, ready for hanging, is reduced to the minimum, and thus tlieecost of producingsuch draperies is greatly minimized.
While I have illustrated and described a particular construction embodying my iiiventioii, and have described a particular way of producing a plaited drapery in accordance with my invention, I do not wish to be understood as intending toV limit it hereto as the structure may be variously modiiied and altered and the manner of constructing it variously modified without departing from thespirit of my invention. j
What I claiin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A drape-ry havingV portions thereoi- 1 wise of said plait-forming portions and 'into the space betweenthe inner portions thereof, and means common to said plait-forming portions and to said tape for holding said plait-forming portions in position and said if tape in place.
`forming portions in the drapery wise of, and adjacent to, said plaited portion, and stitching extending through said plait-forming portions and saidV tape for holding said plait-forming portions in position and said tape in place.
4. A drapery having portions thereof folded to :form a plait, tape extending lengthwise ofsaid plait and into the space between the inner portions thereof, and stitching extending through said plait-forming portions and said tape for holding said plait- .forming portions and to said tape for holding' said plait-forming portions in position and said tape in place.
ed to form a. plait, tape provided with a suspending device and extei'iding lengthwise of, and adjacent to, said plaited portion, and means common to said plait-forming plait-forming portions 7. A drapery having portions thereof folded to forni a plait, tape provided with 'a tionv and extending lengthwise of said plaited portion, and means securing said tape to ERNEST ii. rALxiiN-Biiiie.
position and said tape 6. A drapery having portions thereof oldportions and to said tape for holding said in position and` said :tape in place. v
