Definitions
- a metal halide high-pressure discharge lamp is known (US Pat. No. 3,519,872) in which a fine tungsten heating coil is arranged in series with the main electrode, the free ends of the electrode and the heating coil in each case being connected to a power supply which is electrically insulated from one another are led through a crushing or melting of a discharge vessel.
- a fine tungsten heating coil is arranged in series with the main electrode, the free ends of the electrode and the heating coil in each case being connected to a power supply which is electrically insulated from one another are led through a crushing or melting of a discharge vessel.
- the object of the present application is to significantly shorten the start-up time of high-pressure metal halide discharge lamps, in particular with small outputs, until the useful luminous flux is reached.
- Metal halide high pressure discharge lamps have recently been used increasingly for general lighting purposes. Furthermore, such lamps have also been proposed for the headlights of motor vehicles. Small power levels of less than 100 W, in particular also below 50 W, are used for both applications. In addition, there is an increased need for high lighting comfort with regard to the color properties and the rapid start-up of such lamps for both applications. Since the discharge vessel of these low-watt lamps only has an extremely small volume of approx. 0.03 cm3, no heating coil can be accommodated there, as is carried out for lamps with high power consumption. However, this is possible with a design of the electrode according to the invention. The use of a hairpin-shaped and uncoiled wire made of tungsten requires little more space than a conventional electrode for this type of lamp.
- the meltdown is large enough to accommodate two power supplies isolated from each other, the heating current flowing through the power supplies connected in series with the electrode during preheating, and after the lamp is ignited, both power supplies are connected in parallel and transmit the operating current.
- a metal halide high-pressure discharge lamp preheated in this way, the 30% luminous flux is achieved approximately 5 times, the 50% luminous flux approximately 4 times and the 90% luminous flux approximately 2.5 times faster than with a cold-ignited lamp.
- both electrodes of the high-pressure discharge lamp are designed as heating electrodes according to the invention, start-up can be carried out even faster realize values.
- a discharge vessel with a larger mass and thus a correspondingly greater electrical power can also be used.
- the metal halide high-pressure discharge lamp 1 in FIG. 1 has an elongated discharge vessel 2 made of quartz, on the opposite sides of which the bruises 3 and 4 extend.
- a sealing film 5 made of molybdenum is arranged, which is connected to an outer power supply 6 and an inner storm supply 7 made of tungsten.
- the inner power supply 7 protrudes into the discharge space 8 and carries a spherical electrode 9 at its end.
- two smaller sealing foils 10 and 11, likewise made of molybdenum are electrically insulated from one another and in parallel embedded to each other, an outer power supply line 12 and 13 being attached to the ends of these sealing foils 10 and 11 facing away from the discharge vessel 2.
- the legs 14 and 15 of the heating electrode 16 bent in the shape of a hairpin are welded to the ends of the sealing foils 10 and 11 facing the discharge vessel 2.
- the discharge space 8 has a volume of approximately 0.03 cm3.
- the arch of the hairpin-shaped heating electrodes 16 protrudes approximately 2.5 mm into the discharge space 8.
- the heating electrode 16 itself consists of an uncoiled wire made of tungsten with a diameter of approximately 150 ⁇ m.
- the distance between the electrodes 9 and 16 is approximately 4.5 mm.
- the discharge vessel 2 contains about 1 mg of mercury and the halides of sodium, thallium and tin with a total amount of about 0.3 mg.
- Argon is introduced as the starting gas.
- the operating pressure of the lamp is approx. 40 bar.
- the heating electrode 16 is heated via the power supply lines 12 and 13 at a voltage of approximately 2.8 V and a current of approximately 5.5 A in the non-burning state of the lamp, so that the discharge vessel 2 is constantly kept at temperature and the Filling components have evaporated.
- approximately 16 kV are required, which are supplied to the spherical electrode 9 via the power supply 6.
- the heating circuit for the hairpin-shaped electrode 16 is interrupted.
- the operating current of approx. 0.35 A is now conducted via the power supply lines 12 and 13 connected in parallel. With a burning voltage of approx. 100 V, the lamp has an electrical output of approx. 35 W.
- FIGS. 2 and 3 A comparison of the starting speed of a conventionally (FIG. 2) and a metal halide high-pressure discharge lamp operated according to the invention (FIG. 3) is shown in FIGS. 2 and 3.
- the diagrams show that the preheated lamp is already 30% after approx. 2.3 seconds (corresponds to the luminous flux ⁇ of approx. 1000 1m of a conventional H4 incandescent lamp), 50% after approx. 3.7 seconds and after 11.9 Seconds has reached 90% of its final luminous flux of approx. 2,650 1m.
- the values of an unheated lamp 30% luminous flux at approx. 11.8 seconds, 50% at approx. 14.6 seconds and 90% at approx. 28.7 seconds.
- the color temperature of the lamp with the specified filling is approx. 3,600 K.

Abstract
