Definitions
- the present invention relates to masts of a sailing boat. It relates, more particularly, to a mast structure inside which the rod of a sail furler can take place.
- mast of the above type which is constituted by a drawn profile of metal or light alloy having a horseshoe-shaped section defined by two concentric walls, one internal, the other external. , joined by spacers.
- the object of the present invention is to provide a boat mast which does not suffer from the above drawbacks.
- the mast according to the invention has, in cross section, an external portion having roughly the shape of a horseshoe, an internal portion disposed inside the external portion to reinforce it and having the shape an arc of a circle, of the same axis of symmetry as the latter and open on the same side as it, the ends of which are respectively connected to the branches of the horseshoe and two closure portions fixed to the respective ends of said branches and forming two lips which partially obstruct the horseshoe opening, leaving sufficient space between them to allow the passage of a sail fixed inside the mast.
- the mast is constituted by the assembly of two sections respectively forming the two closure portions and at least one third section forming the outer and inner portions.
- FIG. 1 is a cross-sectional view of a boat mast according to the invention.
- the ratio between the size of the horseshoe 10 along the axis xx '(length) and its largest dimension in a direction perpendicular to this axis (width) is approximately 1.5.
- the ratio of its width to the size of its opening is approximately 1.6.
- the portion 12 which can be said, for simplicity, that it is in the shape of a Q, the arc of a circle 12a covers an angle of approximately 160 0 to 170 0 and the ratio between its radius and the width horseshoe is about 0.35 to 0.40.
- the distance from its center to the base of the horseshoe is between 25% and 30% of its length.
- the structure thus formed offers, in its half closest to the opening of the horseshoe, a free volume which is used to receive the rod of a sail furler.
- the space which separates the ends of the two lips 14 is intended for the passage of the sail.
- the mast is formed by the assembly of four sections A, B, C and D made by drawing in metal or light alloy, such as aluminum.
- the horseshoe-shaped portion 10 and the Q-shaped portion 12 are formed by the two sections A and B, one of which A forms the roundness of the horseshoe and part of its branches, while the other B forms the rest of the branches and the entire portion in Q.
- These two sections are assembled by a notch system by exploiting the relative elasticity of the branches of section A. This comprises, at each end, a projecting part 16, facing inward, which takes place in a notch 18 formed on the outside of the corresponding end of the profile B.
- the elasticity of the profile A allows it to open slightly to allow penetration, between the ends of its branches, the ends of the profile B until the projecting parts 16 fit into the notches 18.
- the other two sections C and D are identical and respectively constitute the two closure portions or lips 14 of the structure. These sections which partially close the rear part of the mast, leaving only a slot for the passage of the sail, are attached to the ends of the section B. They have a rounded wall 14a forming the end of the lip and extending by a wall 14b looking towards the inside of the mast and a wall 14c looking towards the outside. The wall 14b has a length substantially double that of the wall 14c which ends at the end of the profile B. Finally, a reinforcing wall 14d connects the end of the wall 14c in the middle of the wall 14b.
- the rounded wall 14a makes it possible to offer the sail, when it comes into contact with the lip, a softened profile which significantly reduces its risk of being damaged.
- profiles C and D are carried out at two points. More specifically, the wall 14b ends in a rounded 20 which takes place in a groove 22 formed on the inside of the profile B. A flat 24 is provided at the base of the rounded 20 to allow the introduction thereof. in groove 22. Water the attachment point is located at the end of the profile B which has a notched protruding part 26 cooperating with another notched protruding part 28, of complementary shape, which extends the wall 14d. Profiles C and D are thus hooked to profile B by a snap-in system and by a notch system.
- the wall 14c advantageously comprises an opening opening into a cavity 30 which allows the attachment of an auxiliary sail.
- the structure described remains essentially the same for all dimensions of masts.
- the way in which this structure is produced, and more particularly the number of profiles used may differ.
- the example described, using two sections to constitute the horseshoe portion and the ⁇ portion relates to a structure whose section has a length of 44 cm and a width of 30 cm.
- For a mast of larger dimensions it may be advantageous to produce the section A in two, or even three parts.
- profiles A and B can be replaced by a single profile. It should also be mentioned that these two profiles can be assembled by welding, gluing or riveting.
- This rigidity does not, however, prevent, thanks to the method of attachment of the lips and their realization in several sections, very easy access to the important organs of the sail furler trapped inside the mast.
- the profiles used have shapes that make their manufacture very easy.
- the fixing of the pulleys to the front of the mast poses no problem since only one wall must be pierced.
