Description
- Gegenstand der Erfindung ist ein Verfahren zum Elektrolysieren von flüssigen Elektrolyten mit Gasblasenbildung im Elektrolyten in ungeteilten oder durch mindestens eine Trennwand geteilten Elektrolysezellen, bei denen mindestens eine Elektrode durchbrochen ist.
- Es ist eine große Zahl von Elektrolyseprozessen mit ungeteilten und durch Trennwände geteilten Elektrolysezellen bekannt, bei denen Gas im Elektrolyt freigesetzt wird. Die negativen Auswirkungen eines derartigen Blasenregimes zu vermindern, ist Gegenstand dieser Erfindung. Bei vielen dieser Prozesse nach dem Stand der Technik läßt man die direkt kontaktierten Elektroden zur Erzielung einer kompakten Bauweise vertikal in dic Elektrolytflüssigkeit eintauchen. Besonders bei geteilten Elektrolysezellen, in denen anodenseitig und kathodenseitig Gas entwickelt wird, ist diese Bauweise anzutreffen. Die Gasblasen stören jedoch in vielfältiger Weise den Elektrolyseprozeß. Besonders zu nennen sind:
- - Erhöhung des Ohmschen Spannungsabfalls,
- - Blockierung von Elektroden und Trennwänden,
- - ungleichmäßige Strombelastung zwischen oben und unten,
- - Druckschwankungen zwischen Anolytraum und Katholytraum bei verändertem Gasgehalt in geteilten Elektrolysezellen,
- - Vibration durch Masseverlagerung von Großblasen in der Zweiphäsenströmung
- - hochfrequente Druckschwankungen, verursacht durch die Zweiphasenströmung an den verengten Auslaßöffnungen,
- - Druckschwankungen durch Veränderung der Strombelastung,
- Die Zweiphasenströmung beeinträchtigt nicht nur die elektrochemischen Bedingungen, sondern auch die Festigkeit und Lebensdauer der Bauteile.
- Nach der französischen Patentanmeldung 2 514 376 ist ein Elektrolyseverfahren in durch Trennwände geteilten Elektrolysezellen bekannt, bei dem der Elektrolyt unter dem Einfluß der Schwerkaft als Film über die Oberfläche einer Elektrode geleitet wird. Eventuell entstehendes Gas kann durch die Durchbrüche der darüber angeordneten Streckmetallelektrode entweichen. Wie das Verfahren für gasentwickelnde technische Elektrolyseprozesse auszuführen ist, ist nicht erwähnt.
- Man hat auch durch eine Reihe von anderen Maßnahmen versucht, die geschilderten Störungen abzumildern. Bekannt sind folgende Maßnahmen:
- - Verminderung der Höhe,
- - Verwendung von durchbrochenen Elektroden,
- - Vergrößerung des rückwärtigen Raumes hinter der Elektrode,
- - Rezirkulierung des Elektrolyten in Verbindung mit einem Gasabscheider.
- Diese Maßnahmen erhöhen jedoch die Apparatekosten und das Bauvolumen und mildern nur einige der genannten Störungen ab.
- Die Aufgabe der Erfindung besteht nun darin, die hydrostatischen und hydrodynamischen Effekte zu beseitigen, den Einfluß der Bauhöhe auf den Gasblasengehalt des Elektrolyten zu vermindern und den rückwärtigen Raum hinter der Elektrode zu verkleinern.
- Es wird daher ein Verfahren vorgeschlagen, bei dem mindestens eine durchbrochene Elektrode verwendet wird und das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist, daß man den Elektrolyten unter Ausnutzung der Schwerkraft so durch die Elektrolysezelle fließen läßt, daß seitlich zur Hauptfließrichtung des Elektrolyten ein Gasraum entsteht und die im Elektrolyten gebildeten Gasblasen in diesen abgegeben werden.
- In einer Ausgestaltung des Verfahrens läßt man den Elektrolyten so fließen, daß beide Elektroden, die durchbrochene Elektrode und eine Trennwand, oder die Trennwände benetzt werden.
- Man kann den Elektrolyten auch teilweise durch die Trennwand fließen lassen, mehrfach anstauen oder in mehreren Kanälen nebeneinander fließen lassen.
- Der Elektrolyt kann auch teilweise mäanderförmig umgelenkt werden.
- Unter einer durchbrochenen Elektrode ist eine Elektrode zu verstehen, die Öffnungen aufweist, die größer sind als der Durchmesser der entstehenden Gasblasen, damit die Öffnungen nicht von einzelnen Gasblasen blockiert werden können. Geeignete Elektroden sind beispielsweise Lochbleche, Streckmetalle, Drahtgewebe, Elektroden aus einzelnen Stäben oder Blechstreifen, sogenannte Spaghetti-Elektroden. Elektroden mit eingearbeiteten Vertiefungen, in denen das Gas abgezogen werden kann, sind ebenfalls geeignet. Die durchbrochene Struktur der Elektroden kann auch so ausgebildet sein, daß der herabfließende Elektrolyt mehrfach angestaut wird. Die Elektroden können auch aus porösem Material hergestellt sein.
- Als Gegenelektrode können Elektroden mit geschlossener oder durchbrochener Struktur verwendet werden. Auch Gasdiffusionselektroden sind geeignet. Als Trennwände können Diaphragmen oder lonenaustauschermembranen benutzt werden. Die Trennwände können mehrlagig aufgebaut sein. Die Elektrolysezellen können auch durch Trennwände in mehere Kammern unterteilt sein.
- Bei geteilten Elektrolysezellen kann man beide Seiten nach dem vorgeschlagenen Verfahren betreiben oder aber nur eine Seite, wobei die andere Seite nach dem Stand der Technik betrieben werden kann.
- Die Elektroden können eben oder gekrümmt sein. Die Elektroden sollen zur Gegenelektrode oder zur Trennwand einen geringeren Abstand haben oder mehr oder weniger vollständig auf der Trennwand aufliefen. Sie können auch mit dieser mechanisch verbunden sein. Zur Fixierung des Abstandes von Elektrode und Gegenelektrode bzw. Elektrode und Trennwand können an sich bekannte Abstandshalter benutzt werden. Ein zu großer Abstand von der Gegenelektrode oder der Trennwand würde zu einem unnötig großen Elektrolytdurchsatz führen, weil eine ionenleitende Verbindung von Elektrode und Gegenelektrode bzw. Elektrode und Trennwand selbstverständlich erreicht werden muß. Der Elektrolyt darf auch ganz oder teilweise auf der Rückseite der Elektrode fließen. Die entstehenden Gasblasen geben durch Zerplätzen an der Phasengrenze ihren Gasinhalt in den seitlich zur Hauptfließrichtung angrenzenden Gasraum ab. Bei plattenförmigen Elektroden ist das der rückwärtigter Raum hinter der Elektrode.
- Es findet also direkt im herabfallenden Flüssigkeitsfilm eine Phasentrennung statt. Die beim Aufplatzen der Blasen eventuell mitgerissenen Elektrolyttröpfchen können beispielsweise durch schräg angeordnete Bleche, die auch der Stromzufuhr dienen können, wieder an die Elektrode zurückgeleitet werden. Elektrolyt und Gas können - da sie weitgehend getrennt sind - einzeln abgezogen werden. Der Elektrolyt soll der Elektrode über die gesamte Breite zulaufen. Die dazu erforderlichen Einrichtungen wie beispielsweise Verteilerrinnen sind an sich bekannt.
- Der Elektrolyt kann auch zwischen den Trennwänden, und in Sonderfällen auch innerhalb der Trennwände, fließen. Um eine bessere Benetzbarkeit von Elektrode und lonenaustauschermembran bei geringem Elektrolytfluß zu erzielen, kann ein Diaphragma zwischen beiden angeordnet sein. lonenaustauschermembran, Diaphragma und Elektrode können dicht aufeinanderliegen. Bei größerem Elektrolytdurchsatz kann es jedoch zweckmäßig sein, zwischen lonenaustauschermembran und Diaphragma einen Spalt zu lassen, in dem der Elektrolyt fließen kann. Der Elektrolyt bleibt damit weitgehend blasenfrei.
- Bei Elektrolysezellen mit mehreren Kammern, wie beispielsweise bei der Elektrodialyse von Meerwasser, bei der abwechselnd Kationen- und Anionenaustauschermembranen angeordnet sind, kann der Elektrolyt auch zwischen diesen Trennwänden fließen.
- Man kann den Elektrolyten auch mäanderförmig herabfließen lassen. Man erreicht das beispielsweise durch eine entsprechende Gestaltung der Abstandshalter oder der Elektroden.
- Durch entsprechend gestaltete Abstandshälter oder Elektroden kann auch erreicht werden, daß der Elektrolyt in mehreren Kanälen herabfließt.
- Damit der Elektrolyt im Sinne des erfindungsgemäßen Vorschlages überhaupt fließen kann, müssen Elektroden und Trennwände so angeordnet sein, daß ein gewisses Gefälle, charakterisiert durch den Winkel a, gegenüber der Horizontälen entsteht. Der Winkel a muß größer als 0 und kleiner als 180° sein. Ein a größer als 90° soll bedeuten, daß der Elektrolyt an der Unterseite der durchbrochenen Elektrode fließt. Die ionenleitende Verbindung zur Gegenelektrode bzw. zur Trennwand muß dann durch Kapillarkräfte sichergestelt werden. Das bedeutet, daß hydrophile Oberflachen vorliegen mussen. Falls zwischen Elektrode und Trennwand ein Spalt gewünscht wird, muß dieser klein sein. Auch der zulässige Elektrolytdurchsatz ist in diesem Fall begrenzt. Es ist daher vorteilhafter, einen Winkel a zwischen 0 und 90° zu wählen. Aus Gründen eines einfachen und übersichtlichen Apparateaufbaus ist ein Winkel a von etwa 90° zu bevorzugen, besonders dann, wenn die Elektrolysezelle auf der Anoden- und Kathodenseite nach dem erfindungsgemäßen Verfahren betrieben werden soll.
- Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist auf alle Elektrolysen anwendbar, bei denen in einem flüssigen Elektrolyt Gasblasen entstehen, wie beispielsweise auf:
- - Alkalichlorid-Elektrolyse
- - Salzsäure-Elektrolyse
- - Wasser-Elektrolyse
- - Schmelzfluß-Elektrolyse
- - Chlorat-Elektrolyse
- Das erfindungsgemäße Verfahren ist in geteilten und ungeteilten Elektrolysezellen anwendbar.
- Das vorgeschlagene Verfahren ist auch für Sekundärreaktionen innerhalb der Elektrolysezelle geeignet, beispielsweise zur Herstellung von Propylenoxid aus Propylen über die an sich bekannte Halogen-Zwischenstufe.
- Am Beispiel der Natriumchlorid-Elektrolyse lassen sich deutliche Vorteile gegenüber dem Stand der Technik feststellen:
- Durch Anwendung des erfindungsgemäßen Verfahrens auf beide Seiten einer durch Ionenaustauschermembran oder Diaphragma geteilten Elektrolysezelle kann ein gleichbleibender sehr kleiner Differenzdruck zwischen Katholytraum und Anolytraum eingestellt werden, denn hydrodynamische und hydrostatische Vibrationen und Druckunterschiede treten nicht mehr auf.
- Da es sich um Gasdrucke handelt, ist der Druck im oberen und unteren Teil der Elektrolysezelle nahezu gleich. Die ungewollte Vermischung von Anolyt und Katholyt beim Diaphragma-Verfahren läßt sich daher auf ein Minimum reduzieren. Durch die geringere mechanische Beanspruchung von Elektroden und Trennwänden kann eine feinere Elektrodenstruktur und eine dünnere Ionenaustauschermembran eingesetzt werden, was einer Reduzierung des Ohmschen Spannungsabfalls gleichkommt.
- Da das Aneinanderreiben von Elektroden und Trennwänden durch Vibration entfällt, ist mit einer längeren Lebensdauer der empfindlichen Schichten auf Membran und Elektroden zu rechnen. Beim Einsatz von Gasdiffusionselektroden wird eine Gefügelockerung durch Vibration verhindert. Durch den kurzen Transportweg der Gasblasen zum Gasraum ist der Gasgehalt des Elektrolyten gering, er ist oben und unten nahezu gleich, was sich günstig auf die Stromverteilung und den Ohmschen Spannungsabfall auswirkt. Da Elektrolyt und Gas getrennt voneinander strömen, lassen sich höhere Strömungeschwindigkeiten verwirklichen. Das führt zu einem nur wenige Millimeter tiefen Gasraum hinter den Elektroden. Man kann daher sehr hohe und sehr flache Zelleneinheiten bauen.
- Die Erfindung wird anhand der Figuren 1 bis 16 beispielsweise beschrieben. Es werden nur Anordnungen von Elektroden, Trennwänden und Abstandshaltern dargestellt. Die elektronenleitende Verbindung zur Stromquelle, das Gehäuse der Elektrolysezellen, die Rohrleitungen und dergleichen mehr, werden nicht bildlich dargestellt, da sie allgemein bekannt sind. Der Einfachheit halber sind alle Anordnungen bei a = 90° dargestellt.
- Fig. 1, 2, 3, 14, 15 zeigen ungeteilte Anordnungen;
- Fig. 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16 zeigen Anordnungen, die durch Trennwände geteilt sind.
- Die Fig. 6, 10, 11, 12, 13 wird ohne Gegenelektrode dargestellt.
- In Fig. 1 sind zwei durchbrochene Elektroden 3 und 4 dargestellt, die durch scheibenförmige Abstandshalter 5 fixiert sind. Als Abstandshalter 5 sind aber auch Netze und Fäden geeignet. Der Elektrolyt 1 wird am oberen Rand der Elektroden aufgegeben und fließt nach unten, wobei beide Elektroden benetzt werden. Dabei kann auch ein Teil des Elektrolyten 1 an der Rückseite der Elektroden 3 und 4 herabfließen.
- Die Anordnungen in Fig. 2 und Fig. 3 entsprechen weitgehend der Figur 1. In Fig. 2 besitzt die Elektrode 4 jedoch eine geschlossene Struktur. In Fig. 3 besteht die Elektrode 4 aus einer Gasdiffusionselektrode.
- Fig. 4 zeigt eine durch eine Trennwand 6 geteilte Anordnung. Elektrolyt 1a und 1b fließt daher in getrennten Räumen, wobei jeweils eine Elektrode und die Trennwand 6 benetzt werden. Der Abstand der Bauteile 3, 4 und 6 kann durch Abstandshalter ähnlich Fig. 1 fixiert werden. In Fig. 5 liegen die Elektroden 3 und 4 direkt auf der Trennwand 6 auf. Man spricht in diesem Fall vom Nullabstand. Die Elektrode 3 ist hier als Drahtgewebe dargestellt. Der größtenteils auf der Rückseite der Elektroden fließende Elektrolyt 1a und 1 wird infolge der durchbrochenen Struktur der Elektroden 3 und 4 ständig gemischt und befördert die entstehenden Gasblasen an die Grenze zum Gasraum. In Fig. 6 ist die Elektrode 3 direkt mit der Trennwand mechanisch verbunden. Der Elektrolyt 1b fließt hier vollständig auf der Rückseite der Elektrode 3.
- Fig. 7 zeigt eine Anordnung mit zwei Trennwänden 6 und 2. Der Elektrolyt 1b fließt vorzugsweise zwischen den Trennwänden 6 und 2, die zweckmäßigerweise durch Abstandshalter ähnlich Fig. 1 fixiert werden können. Es ist hier zu beachten, daß die frei zulaufende Elektrolytmenge durch die Geometrie und die Stoffeigenschaften festgelegt ist. Diesem Umstand ist beispielsweise durch Schaffung von Überläufen an der Aufgabenstelle des Elektrolytes Rechnung zu tragen. Der Elektrolyt 1b steht durch die als Diaphragma ausgebildete Trennwand 2 in Kontakt zur Elektrode 3. Der Stoffaustausch geschieht weitgehend durch Diffusion. Die Gasblasen entstehen an der Berührungsstelle der Elektrode 3 mit dem elektrolytgefüllten Diaphragma 2 und können ihren Gasinhalt an den seitlich angrenzenden Gasraum abgeben.
- Fig. 8 zeigt eine Anordnung mit Trennwand 6, die so ausgebildet ist, daß der Elektrolyt 1 mindestens teilweise durch die Trennwand 6 herabfließt. Die Elektroden 3 und 4 liegen auf der Trennwand 6 auf. Die Anordnung ist vor, zugsweise für geringen Elektrolytbedarf geeignet wie beispielsweise bei der Wasserelektrolyse.
- Fig. 9 zeigt eine Anordnung für eine geteilte Elektrolysezelle, bei der der Elektrolyt 1a und 1b mehrfach mindestens teilweise an gestaut wird. Die Elektrode 3 besteht aus Blechstreifen, die in einem Bereich so dicht zur Trennwand 6 angeordnet sind, daß eine Drosselstelle entsteht. Dadurch wird ein Teil des Elektrolyts gezwungen, über die obere Kante der Blechstreifen zu fließen. Eine ähnliche Wirkung wird durch die horizontal angeordneten Drähte erzielt, aus denen die Elektrode 4 aufgebaut ist. Durch den Abstandshalter 5 kann die Wirkung der Drosselstelle eingestellt werden.
- In Fig. 10 und Fig. 11 ist eine Elektrode gezeigt, bei der die Durchbrüche nicht bis auf die Rückseite hindurchgeführt sind. Fig. 10 zeigt einen vertikalen Schnitt und Fig. 11 einen horizontalen Schnitt derselben Anordnung. Durch die besondere Ausbildung der Elektrode 3 fließt der Elektrolyt 1b in Kanälen nach unten, wobei er die Trennwand 6 und einen Teil der Elektrode 3 benetzt. Die teilweise Benetzung kann dadurch erreicht werden, daß die an die Trennwand 6 angrenzenden Bereiche der Elektrode 3 hydrophil und die entfernteren Bereiche hydrophob ausgebildet sind. Eine andere Möglichkeit besteht darin, die Anordnung mit einem Winkel a < 90° zu betreiben. Der seitlich an die Hauptflußrichtung des Elektrolyten angrenzende Gasraum wird hier durch die Elektrode 3 selbst eingeschlossen. Diese Elektrodenart kann gleichzeitig als bipolare Trennwand dienen.
- Fig. 12 zeigt einen Horizontalschnitt einer Anordnung, bei der der Elektrolyt 1b ebenfalls in Kanälen abwärts fließt. Die Elektrode 3 ist hier aus Drähten gefertigt. Die Elektrode 3 kann, wie dargestellt, teilweise benetzt sein oder auch ganz.
- Fig. 13 zeigt ebenfalls einen Horizontalschnitt. Die Elektrode 3 besteht aus porösem Material und ist in Streifen nebeneinander angeordnet. Die einzelnen Streifen lassen Lücken frei, durch die die Gasblasen ihren Gasinhalt in den seitlich angrenzenden Gasraum abgeben können. Ein Teil des gebildeten Gases kann dabei durch die Poren der Elektrode 3 in diesen Gasraum gelangen.
- Fig. 14 zeigt eine ungeteilte Anordnung, bei der die aus vielen Drähten aufgebauten Elektroden 3 und 4 kammartig ineinandergesteckt sind. Elektrode und Gegenelektrode liegen daher nicht nebeneinander sondern untereinander. Die Anode ist mit "+" und die Kathode mit "-" gekennzeichnet. Der Elektrolyt 1 fließt quer zu den Drähten. Man kann den Elektrolyten 1 jedoch auch parallel zu den Drähten fließen lassen. Fig. 15 unterscheidet sich nur dadurch von Fig. 14, daß ein anderes Profil anstelle der Drähte dargestellt ist.
- Fig. 16 zeigt eine durch eine Trennwand 6 geteilte Anordnung von Elektrode 3 und Gegenelektrode 4, bei der die Einzeldrähte der Elektroden ebenfalls kammartig ineinandergesteckt sind. Die Fließrichtung der Elektrolyte 1a und 1b kann auch parallel zu den Drähten sein.
