Definitions
- the invention relates to a metal-coated paper which has a metal coating containing binders, which is applied to a paper carrier layer by gravure printing, the coating preferably being continuous, that is to say uninterrupted and uniform.
- the invention further relates to a method for producing such paper.
- Papers which have been printed with a color composed of metal powder and binder by gravure printing.
- the metal coating has only a limited abrasion resistance. This disadvantage is particularly significant when such papers are placed on fast-running, electronically controlled packaging machines should be processed, because if the metal particles are less firmly integrated into the coating, there is a likelihood that metal particles will splinter along the fold lines and the resulting metal dust leads to malfunctions in the control of the packaging machines.
- the metal-coated papers used on such machines have therefore previously been produced in such a way that a metal foil is laminated onto a paper carrier layer.
- Such papers, in which the metal foil consists of aluminum, are widely used for packaging cigarettes. This paper forms the lining of the cigarette box.
- Equipping a cigarette packaging with an aluminum-coated (wrapping) paper is a considerable cost factor. These primarily include the material costs due to the aluminum content, which depend on the amount of metal used. With a thickness of 7 p of the aluminum foil, the consumption is approx. 20 g for one square meter. Depending on the stiffness of the outer casing (cardboard) used for cigarette packaging, the thickness of the aluminum coating is between 6 and 15 p. A thin, uncoated paper with a square meter weight of 22 to 40 g is used as the carrier layer for the aluminum foil.
- the invention proposes that the coating of the paper carrier layer contains a flake structure-containing metal particles which are fully wettable by the binder.
- So-called “non-leafing" metal pigments are therefore used for the production of the paper according to the invention, which, due to their property that they are fully wettable by the binder, do not float when the printing ink is processed with the solvent.
- the "non leafing" properties of metal powder pigments are obtained in a manner known per se, the essential point being to use one of the grinding aids used, e.g. Stearic acid, resulting non-wettability through special after-treatment measures - often referred to as "anti-reflective" - to be canceled, e.g.
- the metal powder can also be used right from the start, i.e. in the course of the grinding process, by using suitable grinding aids, the wettability required according to the invention is imparted.
- the metal particles are so firmly integrated into the coating of the paper carrier layer that the desired abrasion resistance is achieved. Due to the flake structure of the pigment particles, an optical effect comparable to the known papers laminated with a metal foil is also achieved.
- the metal coating of the paper according to the invention preferably consists of aluminum, a copper-zinc alloy (gold bronze) or copper.
- the metal can be mixed as a powder or paste with the other constituents (binders, solvents) of the mass to be processed by gravure printing. How this can be done in detail is described further below.
- the metal-coated paper according to the invention is characterized in that, while maintaining the (folding) properties necessary for its further use, in particular its processing on packaging machines, it can be produced much more cost-effectively than the known papers, in which, as described above, a Aluminum foil is laminated onto a paper carrier layer.
- the paper according to the invention can have a coating of 0.5 to 10 g / m 2 . It is preferably 1.5 to 2.5 g / m 2 . This is contrasted by the known metal coating with an aluminum foil of approx. 20 g / m 2 (100% metal).
- the coating according to the invention as mentioned, to be only 0.5 to 10 g / m 2 , the metal content being between 5 to 90% by weight, preferably 40 to 60% by weight.
- the state of the art can be used to select the diluents for the printing ink.
- These are preferably (alcoholic) solvents, such as butanol and isopropanol, combined under the name "Sprit”.
- the solvent contained in the paste should be volatile; the evaporation number is preferably less than 25.
- the solvent contained in the metal pigment paste should preferably be free of aromatics. Ethyl acetate, isopropanol and ethyl glycol are mentioned as examples of the solvents to be considered in this connection.
- the invention proposes that the still moist metal coating of the material web pulled off from the printing cylinder is by means of a tool pressed against the metal coating, e.g. a role of spreading and drying only afterwards. This spreading, in which printing ink deposited on elevations is pressed into depressions present between them, ensures the formation of a completely smooth coating surface.
- composition of two gravure inks which can be used to produce the metal-coated paper according to the invention is given below:
- the ink is received by the gravure cylinder 2 from the ink tray 1 and transferred to the paper web 3 to be printed, which is pressed against the surface of the printing cylinder 2 by means of the impression cylinder 4.
- 5 denotes a doctor blade against the surface of the impression cylinder 2.
- the contact pressure can form a uniform and smooth surface on the metal coating, so that after subsequent drying in the drying device 7, into which the coated material web runs after passing through the deflection roller 8, no unevenness (roughness) can be determined on the surface of the metal coating .

Abstract
