Definitions

  • exhaust mufflers for combustion engines are to minimize the noise generated by the exhaust. However, they must avoid overly braking the flow of these gases because the power of the engine would be reduced, but moreover they must have the smallest possible volume because the space available for their mounting is small, especially when it 'acts of exhaust silencer of motor vehicle.
  • silencers generally comprise a cylindrical envelope which is closed by end cups crimped onto it and in which tubes, supported by internal cups and communicating with each other in end chambers adjacent to the closure cups, guide the gas in a zigzag path.
  • the envelopes of these silencers can have a circular, oval, or other section, depending on the space available under the body for example, but in all cases each end chamber connecting the successive tubes must have a relatively large volume to avoid braking. of the gas flow, so that the size of the silencer is still often troublesome.
  • the object of the present invention is to remedy this drawback by providing an exhaust gas silencer in which the volume of the end chamber is reduced without causing braking of the gas flow and even by reducing this braking.
  • the subject of this invention is in fact a silencer for exhaust gases from a heat engine comprising an external cylindrical envelope and gas guide tubes, interconnected by at least one end chamber delimited inside the envelope by a flat intermediate cup for supporting the tubes and an end cup, in which the end cup comprises, at right of two successive tubes a rounded and hollow boss, projecting outwards, the top of which is separated from the intermediate cup by a distance slightly greater than the radius of the tubes, while the thickness of the chamber around this boss is smaller than the diameter of these tubes, so that the boss guides the change in direction of the flow of gases between these tubes.
  • the large base of the elliptical boss has a dimension which corresponds substantially to the distance between the opposite generatrices of two successive tubes of a silencer, while its small dimension is similar to the diameter of one of these tubes.
  • the rounded boss thus forms a flow guide wall, the direction of which is gradually reversed, which reduces the formation of turbulence and pressure losses.
  • the distance between the cup itself, that is to say its flat part, and the end of the tubes can be relatively small, which makes it possible to reduce the length of the cylindrical envelope and, by next, the total size of the silencer.
  • the muffler thus represented comprises a casing 1, of cylindrical shape, closed at each of its ends by a cup, respectively 2, 4.
  • the cup 2 is traversed by an exhaust gas inlet tube 6, while the cup 4 is crossed by an outlet tube 8 for these gases into the atmosphere.
  • the open end of the gas inlet tube 6 is fixed in an interior cup 10, which delimits with the corresponding end cup 4 a chamber 12.
  • the open end of the outlet tube 8 is fixed in an internal cup 14, which defines with the corresponding end cup 2 a gas chamber 16.
  • a third tube 18 connects the chambers 12 and 16, so that the gas entering through the tube 6 travels in a zigzag path forcing it to change direction twice before exiting through tube 8.
  • the end cup 2 which supports the inlet tube 6, is constituted by a planar element provided with a peripheral rim 20 directed towards the outside and having a length sufficient to be folded down and fixed by crimping on the extreme edge of the envelope 1. Furthermore, the cup 2 has a rounded boss 22, projecting outwards, which, as shown more clearly in FIG. 2, has a form base substantially elliptical.
  • the large dimension of this base corresponds substantially to the sum of the two orifices provided in the cup 14 for fixing the tubes 18 and 8, and of the cup portion which separates them, that is to say the distance which separates the two generators furthest from the tubes 18 and 8.
  • the small dimension of this boss 22 is slightly larger than the diameter of one of the tubes 18 or 8.
  • the boss 22 is obtained by stamping the cup 2 outwards, so that its wall is gradually curved and forms a surface for guiding and deflecting the flow of gas between the tubes 18 and 8.
  • the cylindrical envelope 1 having an oval base
  • the tubes 6, 18 and 8 are aligned on the major axis of this oval. Consequently, the cup 2, which also has an oval shape, has a hole for the passage of the tube 6 which is aligned with the large dimension of the boss 22.
  • the cup 4 is produced in the same way as the cup 2 and, like it, has a rounded boss 24 projecting outwards, as well as a passage orifice for the tube 8 aligned with the large dimension of the boss 24.
  • each of these cups 2 or 4 the depth of the boss is relatively large and the projection from the top to the outside of the flat part corresponds substantially to the radius of the tube 18 or 8.
  • this end cup is fixed to the envelope 1, at a relatively small axial distance from the intermediate cup 10, 14, so that the chamber 12, 16 has, around the boss 22, an axial dimension which is at most equal to the diameter of the tube 6, 18 or 8 , while at the right of the top of the boss its dimension corresponds to that of a classic extreme chamber.
  • the exhaust gases entering through the tube 6 change direction, on the one hand in the chamber 12 between the ends of the tubes 6 and 18 and the wall of the boss 24, and on the other hand in the chamber 16 between the ends of the tubes 18 and 8 and the wall of the boss 22.
  • the shape of the bosses 22 and 24 is such that these portions of the chambers 12 and 16 practically form a continuation of the tubes 6 or 18 in which, thanks to the absence of any guide wall between the tubes and the boss, the direction of the gases is changed without sudden encounter of these with the wall and with minimal braking. Consequently, it can be seen that it is no longer necessary to give the chambers 12 and 16 a large volume and that the cups 2 and 4 can be mounted much closer to the interior cups 10 and 14 than in conventional silencers. For example, the cups 2 and 4 can be brought closer to a distance corresponding to the depth of the boss 22 or 24 and thus keep a sufficient volume to, in cooperation with the particular shape of the boss, prevent braking of the fluid by facilitating its flow.
  • cups according to the invention can be used on mufflers of various types, for example on mufflers such as that shown in FIG. 3, the outer envelope 21 of which is a cylinder with a circular base.
  • the three tubes 6, 18 and 8 are no longer aligned and each end cups 26 has a boss 28, similar in shape to boss 22 or 24, and a hole for passage of the inlet tube 6, or outlet 8, formed on the side of this boss, and preferably centered on the median axis corresponding to its smallest dimension.
  • FIG. 4 shows a silencer which comprises only two tubes, a gas inlet tube 30 and a gas outlet tube 32, both fixed in the same flat end cup 34. These two tubes cross the length of the cylindrical casing 31 and open into a chamber closed by an end cup 36.
  • This cup 36 has a boss 38 for guiding and reversing the flow of gas, which projects outside the silencer and the base of which corresponds substantially to the assembly of the two end orifices of the tubes. It is obvious that if the muffler were to have more than three tubes, at least one of the end cups could have several similar bosses, each guiding the flow of fluid between two successive tubes.
  • the silencer obtained has a smaller footprint than that of a conventional silencer and, moreover, provides significantly better noise attenuation.
  • Such a type of muffler is therefore particularly suitable for reducing the noise generated by the exit of exhaust gases from motor vehicles, in which the space available under the bodywork is generally extremely reduced, but also in many other applications. this is mainly due to its high efficiency and reduced cost.
