Definitions
- Polypropylene in particular highly crystalline polypropylene, is a material that is valued as a molding material, since e.g. characterized by easy processability and leads to molded parts that have good heat resistance and high rigidity.
- a well-known disadvantage of polypropylene is, however, that its toughness (e.g. the fracture toughness according to DIN 53 443) decreases very sharply with temperatures that are below its glass point - that is approx. In practice, this means that at temperatures below + 4 ° C the useful value of molded parts made of polypropylene is considerably restricted.
- thermoplastic polymers include, in particular, copolymers from higher-level menus gene ethylene and minor amounts of an alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid (see. OE-PS 237 286).
- thermoplastic copolymers in polypropylene molding compositions entails, however, have to be bought with a certain disadvantage, namely a noticeable drop in the stiffness values (for example in the tensile modulus of elasticity according to DIN 53 457) .
- polypropylene molding compositions which are composed of (1) a certain polypropylene, (2) a certain thermoplastic copolymer made from (2.1) ethylene, (2.2) an alkyl ester of acrylic or methacrylic acid and / or a vinyl ester of an alkane carboxylic acid and (2.3) - optionally - acrylic or methacrylic acid and (3) a certain inorganic, platelet-shaped filler.
- the new molding compositions can be produced directly from these components or, as is frequently practiced in comparable cases, via a concentrate of the filler (3) in one of the polymerization components (1) or (2). It goes without saying that for a homogeneous distribution of the components among themselves Cares; - That is to say that the other components are expediently worked on via the molten state of the polypropylene and under intensive mixing conditions, for example in a twin-screw kneader.
- the molding compositions according to the invention can be processed on the processing machines customary for processing polypropylene molding compositions to give the moldings known and customary for polypropylene, e.g. for foils, profiles, plates, hollow bodies and body parts.
- This mixture is homogenized in a twin-screw kneader at a temperature of about 220 ° C., extruded in strands, cooled and granulated.
- Test specimens are injection molded from the granules thus obtained at melt temperatures of 220 ° C., specifically for determining the tensile modulus of elasticity in accordance with DIN 53 457, as a measure of the rigidity and fracture toughness in accordance with DIN 53 443 B (25 mm dome radius) Measure of toughness.
- Example 1 is repeated with the two only exceptions that both the talc and the copolymer are eliminated.
- the stiffness of the molding compositions according to the invention is approximately the same as that of polypropylene; the cold toughness is much better in the molding compositions according to the invention than in the polypropylene.
- Very surprising is the positive finding that the absolute values of toughness in the molding compositions according to the invention are so high that, as is known, the addition of platelet-like talc in comparable other polypropylene molding compositions depresses their toughness values to a considerable extent.
Abstract
Description
Verarbeitungshilfsmittel, Stabilisatoren, farbgebende Stoffe, flammhemmende Stoffe etc.
