Paint can

The invention relates to a container with a lid made of plastic as a paint can, in particular for holding solvent-free paints with a preferably round or oval container cross-section, with a wall extending from a container base to a container opening, which forms an approximately conical extension of the container in the direction of the container opening and which has an upper circumferential sealing edge for supporting and sealing the lid.

Such a container is known, for example, as an injection-molded single-rimmed plastic bucket from the utility model G 94 03 122-3. The container described there can be easily stacked due to the conicity of its walls.

In addition, the design of the edge of the bucket or the profile of its wall in the edge area is selected in such a way that damage to neighboring buckets during stacking or transport, for example in pallets, is reliably prevented. However, the advantageous design and construction features of such a bucket cannot simply be transferred to a paint can, which has different usage requirements.

For example, such paint cans should be made of transparent and very thin-walled material and have a visually appealing external design. The relatively complex edge design of the plastic bucket known from the utility model G 94 03 122.3 cannot be achieved without

further transferred to a light and thin-walled paint can if this is to be produced cost-effectively using the plastic injection molding process.

Basically, as already mentioned at the beginning, different ergonomic requirements apply to a small can that can be held with one hand than, for example, to a 25 liter paint bucket.

Transparent cylindrical cans are available as cans for solvent-free paints. These cans have a relatively simple and open edge profile, with the upper edge of these cans being designed as a sealing edge onto which a plastic lid can be snapped to seal. When the can is undamaged and unopened, the lid is connected to a retaining ring via a tear-off sealing strip, which in turn grips behind a circumferential rib on the outer wall of the can.

These containers or cans have the disadvantage that they cannot be stacked inside one another when empty. In addition, the lids of the known cans are not designed to be machine-compatible or stackable, i.e. they are not designed in such a way that they center themselves on top of one another. Such lids have to be opened by hand after the cans have been filled. In addition, the design of the tamper-evident closure in the form of a sealing strip or a tear-off band is relatively complicated, so that the production of a corresponding injection molding tool is complex and expensive. Finally, the lid design has the disadvantage that after the sealing strip is torn off, sharp edges are created, which can lead to injuries if handled incorrectly.

The can body itself is also not very stable, especially when subjected to transverse loads or when the can walls are pressed in, especially when the lid is not in place.

has the very special advantage that only one container with different labels can be used for a wide variety of paint types. In order to ensure the transparency of the plastic in a visually appealing way, the container must therefore have very thin walls. This is of course at the expense of stability, so special measures to ensure stability are desirable.

The object of the invention is therefore to develop a container of the type mentioned at the outset in such a way that it is stackable, stable and visually appealing as well as structurally simple while maintaining a thin-walled construction.

The object is achieved according to the invention in that the container has an outwardly projecting, one-piece collar below the sealing edge and at a distance from it, which forms a channel open in the direction of the container opening, which is closed by the attached lid by a circumferential lid apron and with this forms a closed outer contour of the container.

A container designed in this way combines various advantages, for example the second edge area of the container formed by the collar ensures that dripping paint is caught by the upper edge of the can, the can can be gripped more easily with one hand and, last but not least, the collar gives the container sufficient stability. The rigidity of the container wall against dents is increased considerably.

It is particularly worth emphasizing that the lid apron and the collar form a closed contour on the outside without sharp-edged transitions. The edge profile of the bucket according to the invention is also open.

In the preferred embodiment of the bucket according to the invention, it is provided that the collar and the lid apron

each have an arched cross-section and form a rounded, bead-like outer contour when the lid is put on. On the one hand, this bead-like contour is easy to grip with one hand, i.e. it ensures that the container does not slip out of your hand, and on the other hand it ensures that the lid put on the container cannot be easily gripped and levered open.

Preferably, the edge of the lid skirt is flush with an outer edge of the collar when in place. This advantageously prevents the lid from being forced open by the lid skirt catching or getting caught on an adjacent container, shelf edge or the like.

The diameter of the lid in the area of the lid skirt can, for example, be slightly smaller than the outer diameter of the collar, so that by taking advantage of the effect that the lid skirt expands when uncovered, the edge of the lid skirt, when in place, ends flush with the outer edge of the collar.

It is expedient to provide several spaced-apart, one-piece reinforcing webs in the channel formed by the collar, which serve to stiffen the channel or reinforce the container. The reinforcing webs also prevent the collar from being pressed in, which would result in the edge of the lid apron being vulnerable to being grasped.

In a preferred embodiment of the container according to the invention, it is provided that vertically extending ribs are provided on the inside of the container on its wall, the dimensions and arrangement of which are selected so that they only allow containers stacked one inside the other to be pushed into one another insofar as the sealing edge of a container does not abut the collar of the container pushed into it. This primarily makes it possible to stack the non-

filled containers, thereby achieving savings in the storage and transport of empty containers.

The container base is expediently provided with a circumferential base support rib which interacts with an annular groove in the lid of another container when the containers are stacked on top of each other.

It is advantageous if the container base is domed. Among other things, the domed container base improves the ability to empty the remaining contents of the container.

Preferably, the container was made of transparent plastic using the injection molding process.

In order to prevent noses forming at the level of the filled container or condensate settling on the inner wall of the container from being visible, the collar expediently has a structured surface, whereby a visually clean closure of the filling level is achieved by reducing the transparency in this area. The lid can have at least one groove or bead on its upper side, i.e. on the upper side when the lid is opened, to accommodate the base support rib of another container.

According to a preferred embodiment of the container according to the invention, the lid is also domed. A brush can be placed in the inside of this domed lid when the lid is open.

It is useful if the radius of the crown of the lid roughly corresponds to the radius of the crown of the container base, so that filled containers stacked on top of each other are centered on top of each other.

Preferably, a tamper-evident seal is provided in the lid apron.

For example, a tab that can be at least partially removed from the lid skirt via a perforation can be provided as a tamper-evident closure.

It is particularly advantageous if this tab is not completely detachable but is, for example, permanently connected to the lid apron on one side via a film hinge, which fundamentally helps to prevent waste.

The lid can be grasped in the area of the removed tab. To avoid pinching fingers when the lid is tight, the lid skirt can be reinforced in the area of the predetermined breaking line of the tamper-evident closure tab. It is practical if the lid skirt has twice the wall thickness in this area.

The container 1 shown in Fig. 1 is designed as an injection-molded, transparent plastic container for holding solvent-free paints. The lid 2 placed on the container 1 is also injection-molded from plastic, although in the embodiment shown it is not transparent.

The container 1 has a round cross-section and its wall 3 forms a conical extension of the container 1 from the container bottom 4 in the direction of the container opening 5, so that the stackability of several unfilled containers 1 is ensured.

The wall 3 of the container 1 forms an upper sealing edge 6, which has a circumferential snap edge 7, which is engaged behind by a circumferential locking projection 8 of the lid 2 when the lid 2 is placed on.

The wall 3 of the container 1 is provided on its outside with a circumferential collar 9, which forms a channel open in the direction of the container opening 5. In this channel formed by the collar 9, reinforcing webs 10 extend between the collar 9 and the wall 3 of the container 1, which are each radially aligned and distributed over the entire circumference of the container 1. The collar 9, which is also transparent, is provided on its outside with a structure 11, which reduces the transparency through the container 1 in the area of the collar 9.

The container bottom 4 is cambered and is provided with a circumferential bottom support rib 12 on its underside.

As can be seen from Fig. 5 and 6, inside

of the container 1, vertically extending ribs 13 are provided on the wall 3 of the container 1, namely approximately in the lower third of the container 1. Fig. 5 clearly shows that the ribs 13 only allow containers stacked one inside the other to be pushed into one another insofar as the sealing edge 6 of the lower container 1 does not abut the collar 9 of the container 1 pushed into it.

Both the lid apron 14 and the collar 9 each have, as can be seen particularly well in Fig. 6, an arcuate cross-section which forms a rounded, bead-like closed outer contour when the lid 2 is in place. The lower edge 15 of the lid apron 14 sits flush on the edge 16 of the collar 9.

The largest outer diameter of the lid 2 is slightly smaller in the unloaded state than the largest outer diameter of the collar 9; when the lid 2 is put on, the sealing edge 6 presses the lid skirt 14 slightly outwards so that the edges 15, 6 of the lid skirt 14 and the collar 9 lie flush against one another and the outer contour of the container 1 has no projections or edges.

A removable tab 17 arranged in the lid skirt 14 is provided as a tamper-evident closure. The tab 17 has two detachable connections 18 to the lid skirt 14 and protrudes slightly from the outer contour of the lid 2 with its handle end 19. At the end remote from the handle end 19, the tab 17 is connected to the lid skirt 14 in a non-detachable manner via a film hinge 20. As can be seen in particular from Fig. 4, the lid skirt 14 is designed with approximately twice the wall thickness in the area of the tamper-evident closure so that the lid 2 can be easily grasped in this area if the tab 17 has been torn open. The handle part 22 of a brush can be inserted into the resulting recess 21 in the lid skirt 14, for example when the lid 2 is turned over. approximately corresponds to the camber of the container bottom 4.

On the inside of the lid 2, a circumferential bead 24 is provided, which forms a corresponding elevation on the outside or top of the lid 2, which in turn delimits the domed area 23 of the lid 2. This contour allows for the centering of stacked filled containers on top of one another, as can be seen in Fig. 7.

At the same time, the bead 24 prevents paint from running into the closure area of the lid when the lid 2 is removed and turned over.

Fig. 8 illustrates the machine-compatible stackability of the lids 2.
