Verfahren zu dessen Herstellung,
Die Erfindung betrifft das bisher nicht beschriebene, in
4-$5tellung durch eine Carboxylgruppe substituierte Sulfobenzoesäureanhydrid
der Formel
HOOC
sowie ein Verfahren zur Herstellung dieses Anhydrids.
sowie ein Verfahren zur Herstellung dieses Anhydrids.
Die neue Verbindung kann vorteilhaft als Ausgangematerial zur Herstellung von Kunststoffen, Farbstoffen, Pflanzensehutz-
und Schädlingsbekämpfungsmitteln, sowie Arzneimitteln verwendet werden.
Die .erfindungsgemäße Verbindung wird beispielsweise hergestellt,
indem man aus 2-Sulf©terephthalsäure, welche man z.B. nach den
Angaben der US-Patentschrift 3.088.956 erhalten kann, intramolekular
Wasser abspaltet. Die Wasserabspaltung kann sowohl rein thermisch, als auch mit Hilfe wasserabspaltender Reagentien
vorgenommen werden.

Bei der thermischen Wasserabspaltung erhitzt man die Sulfoterephthalsäure
auf Temperaturen über I50 C, vorzugsweise in
Gegenwart hochsiedender Lösungsmittel, worunter solche mit einem Siedepunkt zwischen etwa 150 und 250 C zu verstehen sind.
Genannt seien hier z.B. Dichlorbenzole, Trichlorbenzole, Nitrobenzol, Mesitylen, Tetrahydronaphthalin, Dekahydronaphthalin,
sowie hochsiedende Benzine. Die Wasserabspaltung kann bei Normaldruck oder auch im Vakuum erfolgen. Das sich
bildende Wasser wird - gegebenenfalls als Aceotrop mit dem
verwendeten Lösungsmittel — abdestilliert. Das gebildete 4~Carboxy-2-sulfobenzoesäureanhydrid bleibt, in Abhängigkeit
vom gewählten Lösungsmittel, entweder in Lösung, oder fällt zu einem mehr oder weniger großen Teil in kristalliner Form
aus. Als bevorzugtes Lösungsmittel wird 1,2,4-Trichlorbenzol
in einer Menge von 5 bis 25 Mol pro Mol Sulfoterephthalsäure
eingesetzt. Bevorzugte Reaktionstemperatur ist in diesem Falle I70 bis 210°C für etwa 5 Stunden. Aus dfer klaren Lösung
fällt dann beim Abkühlen das 4-Carboxy-2-sulf©benzoesäureanhydrid
kristallisiert aus.
Bei der Wasserabspaltung auf chemischem Wege wird die Sulfoterephthalsäure
mit wasserabspaltenden Reagentien, vorzugsweise mit Acetanhydrid oder auch Acetylchlorid behandelt. Das Molverhältnis Sulfoterephthalsäure i wässerabspaltendem Agens liegt
dabei zweckmässig zwischen 1:1,2 und 1:10, vorzugsweise bei 1:3·
Es ist auch möglich, die Wasserabspaltung mit Phosphorpentoxid,
Schwefeltrioxid oder Oleum vorzunehmen. Selbstverständlich kann man auch in Gegenwart eines indifferenten Lösungsmittels umsetzen.
Verwendet man Acetanhydrid bzw. Acetylchlorid, so ist z.B. Eisessig als Lösungsmittel gut geeignet. Ein Vorteil dieser Arbeitsweise
besteht darin, daß die Acetanhydrid- bzw. Acetylchloridmenge dann nur wenig über der stöchiometrisch erforderlichen Menge zu
liegen braucht.Die Wasserabspaltung auf chemischem Wege führt
man bei Temperaturen zwischen 20 und 140 C, vorzugsweise bei
etwa 100 C durch. Auch hier fällt das gewünschte Anhydrid im
allgemeinen beim Abkühlen des Iteaktionsgemisch.es in Form von Kristallen aus.

4-Ca-rboxy~2-sul:f obenzoesäureanhydrid schmilzt bei 208 bis
210°C (uiikorrigiert) und sublimiert im Hochvakuum ab ca. 15O0C.
Es" kristallisiert in Gestalt farbloser Prismen und ist in Benzol, Chlorbenzol, Methylenchlorid und Benzin wenig löslich.
Bei 25°C lösen sich in 100 g Eisessig 10 g, in 100 g Acetanhydrid 26 g. Auch in Dimethylformamid und in Essigester ist das Anhydrid
gut löslich. Mit Wasser, Alkoholen und Aminen tritt, vor allem bei erhöhter Temperatur, schnell Hydrolyse ein. Auch beim längeren
Stehen an der Luft hydrolysiert es allmählich zu Sulfoterephthaisäure.
Die nachfolgenden Beispiele erläutern die Erfindung:
246 g (1 Mol) SuIf©terephthalsäure (Herstellung nach US-Patentschrift
3.088.956) und 306 g (3 Mol) Acetanhydrid werden 4 Std.
auf 100°C erhitzt, anschließend kühlt man die entstandene Lösung auf Raumtemperatur ab, wobei ein farbloses, kristallines
Produkt ausfällt. Man saugt ab, wäscht mit Methylenchlorid und trocknet. Ausbeute: I60 g (0,7 Mol) 4-Carboxy-2~sulfobenzoesäureanhydrid
vom Smp. 2Ö8-210°C. Verseifungszahlι 737 mg KOH/g
(bor.: 738); Molekulargewicht: 225 (ber.: 228). # C: 41,7
(ber.j 42,1), #11: 1,9 (ber.: 1,8); #S: 14,1 (ber.1 14,O).
Durch Einengen des Filtrates auf 50 Gew.$>
können weitere 30 g Produkt gewonnen werden.
Gesamtausbeutei 190 g = 83 $ d.Theorie.
246 g (1,0 Mol) Sulfoterephthalsäure, 400 g (6,7 Mol) Eisessig
und 153 g (1,5 Mol) Acetanhydrid werden .4 Std. auf 100°C erhitzt;
die Aufarbeitung erfolgt wi. in Beispiel 1.
Ausbeute: 145 g farblose Kristalle vom Smp. 208-210°C.

123 g (0,5 Mol) Sulfοterephthalsäure und 1089 g (6 Mol)
1,2,4-Trichlorbenzol werden 5 Std. auf 170-210°C erhitzt,
wobei 9 g Wasser abdestillieren. Beim Abkühlen der Lösung auf Raumtemperatur fällt das 4-Carboxy-2-sulfobenzoesäureanhydrid
aus. Es wird abgesaugt, mit Methylenchlorid gewaschen und getrocknet. Graue, kristalline Substanz vom
Smp. 205-2080C.
Ausbeute: .102 g = 90 # d. Theorie,
Zur weiteren Reinigung wurde das Produkt aus Eisessig umkristallisiert
und besitzt dann einen Smp. von 208-210°C.
246 g (1,0 Mol) Sulfoterephthalsäure, 108 g (1,5 Mol) Acetylchlorid
und 400 g (6,7 Mol) Eisessig werden in einem Kolben mit aufgesetztem Rtickflußktihler. auf 100°C er-hitzt. Nach 4 Stunden
bei dieser Temperatur ist die Chlorxrasserstoffentwicklung
beendet. Man destilliert dann etwa 50 Vol.~$ des Lösungsmittels
ab, wobei überschüssiges Acetylchlorid aus der Reaktiorismischung entfernt wird und läßt abkühlen. Hierbei fällt das
4-Carboxy-2-sulfobenzoesäureanhydrid als Kristallmasse aus.
Die weitere Aufarbeitung erfolgt gemäß Beispiel 1.
Ausbeute: 188 g vom Smp.208-210°C.
