Erfindung bezieht sich auf verbesserte im wesentlichen
luettngsmittelfreie Massen, die aushärten, wenn s:e in Gegenwart
eines saure Katalysators erhitet werden, wobei zSle, löeungsmittelresistente
Polymere erhalten werden· Die Erfindung bezieht sich insbesondere auf verbesserte im wesentlicAen lösungsmittelfreie
heißh^rtende Hassen, die einen latemen
sauren Katalysator enthalten·
Im wesentlichen lösungsmittelfreie, flüssige polymerbildevde
Massen, die mindestens zwei Dihydropyranylgruppen je MplekÖ?.
enthaltende Verbindungen und eine damit reaktionsfähige PolyhyrdoxylVerbindung
in Mischung mit einem sauren Katalysator aufweisen, sind bereits beschrieben worden. Obwohl derartige

polymerbildende !lassen viele Torteile besitzen» so muß doch bei
ihrer Anwendung der saure Katalysator kurz vor Gebrauch der Hasse zugesetzt werden« !Dies macht ein getrenntes Verpacken
des KatalysatorbesiBixltells von den reaktionsfähigen Bestand«*
teilen notwendig* Es ist jedooh aus kommerziellen Gründen erwlinsoht,
ein in einem Behälter zu verpackendes System zu schaffen, welches bei der lagerung stabil ist, drmit Lagerungsprobleme verringert werden und die Möglichkeit der Verwendung
der Masse ohne den Katalysator ausgeschaltet wird·
Es wurde nun gefunden, daß gewisse latente Säurekatalysatoren
verwendet werden können, um verbesserte.im wesentlichen lösungsmittelfreie
Massen zu schaffen, welche durch Erhitzen unter dem Einfluß eines sauren Katalysators von flüssigen in feste
heißgehärtete Polymere überführt werden können. Unter diesen Produkten finden sich flüssige Massen, -eiche ausgezeichnete
schlitzende Belagfilme ergeben und welche auf Unterlagen in Abwesenheit eines Lösungsmittels aufgebracht werden können»
Die Massen können auch zur Imprägnierung von !Peilen aus VerstKrkungsmaterial,
wie z.B. Glasfasern, verwendet werden.
Die verbesserten erfindungsgemäßen Hasen bestehen aus einem
Gemisch aus 5 bis 88 Gev/.-# einer Verbindung, die mindestens
zwei Dihydropyranlgruppen $e Molekül enthalt, aus 93 bis
10 Gew.-# einer vertraglichen, damit reaktionsfähigen PoIyhydroxylver bin dung und aus 0,002 bis 2 Ge\7.-# eines latenten sauren Katalysators, welcher eine lange thermische Stabilität

Die Umsetzung der Bestandteile dieser verbesserten Massen
ergibt feste heißgehärtete Polymere. Nach Belieben kann ein !lösungsmittel für die Bestandteile in den Massen anwesend sein,

sind bekannt und sind beispielsweise in den US-Patentschriften
2 479 238 und 2 514 168 und in der britischen Patentschrift
655 764 beschrieben.
Die Dihydropyranylringe in der obigen Formel können natürlich
nichtstörende Substituenten enthalten., welche die Wasserstoffatome
an jedem Kohlenstoffatom des Rings ersetzen. Mit "nichtstörenden
Substituenten" sind solche Substituenten gemeint, welche weder saure noch basische !Funktionen aufweisen. Verfahren
zur Herstellung substituierter JDihydropyranylverbindungen
..sind in der TJSrPatentsohrift 2 537 921 angegeben.
Eine besonders geeignete Dihycteq>yranylgruppen enthaltende Verbindung
zur Verwendung in den erfindungsgemäßen Massen ist 3,4-Dihy dro~2H-pyran-2-methyl~3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-oarboxylat
oder "Aoroleintetramer". Bs. .kann durch Selbstkondensation von
Acroleindimer (2-l?ormyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran) in Gegenv.'art von
ungefähr 0,3 # Alurainiumisopropoxyd hergestellt v/erden, wobei
die Reatkonstemperatur 6 st auf 45 0C gehalten, wird. Bin gereinigtes
Produkt wird erhalten durch Entspannungsdestillation in einer Fallfilindestillati ölvorrichtung bei 150 0C unter
Vakuum. 3,4-Dihydro-2H-pyran-2- methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-carboxylat
hat sich als verträglich mit vielen Polyhydroxylyerbindungen herausgestellt und ergibt" unter saurer Katalyse

Die Polyhydrox:;lbestandteile der erf indungtgemäßen Massen müssen
mindestens zwei Hydroxylgruppen im Molekül enthalten, obwohl es natürlich zulässig ist, eine Monohydroxyverbindung als
Verdünnungsmittel oder als Modifiziermittel zu verwenden.
Zusätzlich müssen die Polyhydroxyverbindungen mit den Dihydropyranylgruppen
enthaltenden Komponenten vertraglich sein, d.h. sie müssen demit mischbar oder darin löslich sein. Somit müssen
die beiden Bestandteile entweder mischbare Flüssigkeiten sein, oder eine derselben kann ein Feststoff sein, der in

dem anderen. Bestandteil löslich ist. Sie können auch beide Feststoffe
sein und können als Lösung in einem gemeinschaftlichen Lösungsmittel verwendet werden, aber in diesem Fall wird von
dem vorteilhaften Merkmal der Erfindung kein Gebrauch gemacht. Die Hydroxylgruppen (0H"-)t von denen in dieser Beschreibung
gesprochen v&rd, umfassen Alkohol-, Phenol- und Carboxylhydroxylgruppen.
Es ist natUrlioh möglich, daß die Polyhydroxyl-

verbindung/andere reaktionsfähige Gruppen enthalten·

Unter diesem großen Bereich von Polyhydroxy !verbindungen, die
zur Verwendung in den erfindungsgem^Pen Massen geeignet sind,
sollen die folgenden Gruppen erwähnt werdent
(1) PolyHtherkondensate von mehrwertigen Alkohlen und Olefinoxyden,
wie z.B. die Kondensate von Glycerin und Propylen- oder Xthylenoacyd,
(2) Hydroxylhaltige Ester und!'Polyester, welche Kondensate von
merherwertigen Alkoholen und mehrwertigen Säuren sind. Die VerhaVltniese
können sioh im Bereich von 1 Mol Poly öl für jede
CarbonsHuregruppe in der Säure bis zu 1 Mol Poly carbonsäure
für jede Hydroxylgruppe im Polyol bewegen. Die erste Grenze ergibt einen Ester, welcher freie alkoholische OH-Gruppen
enthält, wogegen die aweite einen Ester ergibt, weloher Carbonsäuregruppen
aufweist* Zwischen diesen Grenzen bilden sich

Hydroxylgruppen können außerdem in ein vorgebildetes Misehpolmer
eingeführt werden, wie es in der US-Patentschrift 2 940
und der britischen Patentschrift 771 569 beschrieben ist.
Monomere Polyole, wie z.B. Glycol und Glycerin sind oft mit
Verbindungen, welche mindestens swei Dihydropyranylgruppen im Molekül aufv/eisen, unvertrKglich, aber duroh Kondensation
der Dihydropyranylverbindung mit zwei Holen eines solchen Polyols, wie Glycol, Glycerin, 1,5-Pentandiol oder 1,2,6-Hexantriol,

den erfindungsgemäßen Massen brauchbar ist· Polycarbonsäuren,
v;ie z.B. Adipin-, Azeiain- und Trimellit/sMure, werden ebenfalls
durch diese Reaktion mit den Dihydropyranylbestandteilen verträglich.
latenten sauren Katalysatoren, die zur Förderung der Vernetzuhgsreaktion
zwischen der mindestens zwei Hydropyranylgruppen je Molekül enthaltenden Verbindung und der Polyhydroxylverbindung
müssen, wenn sie in der Masse dispergiert oder gelöst
sind, bei Raumtemperatur stabil sein, müssen' aber Säure in
Freiheit setzen, wenn sie auf die Härtungstemperatur erhitzt
werden. Bs vmrde gefunden, daß die Wirksamkeit der Katalysatoren
von der Hatur des mit der reaktionsfähigen sauren Gruppe verknüpften Bestes abhängig .ist. Beispielsweise setzen Dimethylsulfat
und Diäthylsulfat, wenn sie als latente Katalysatoren in
den erfindungsgemäßen Massen angewendet werden, bei Raumtemperatur Säure so leicht in Freiheit, daß innerhalb tingefHhr
.einer Stunde nach der Zugabe die Masse geliert ist. Es wird
angenommen, daß die Größe und die Konfiguration des mit der reaktionsfähigen sauren Gruppe verknüpften Restes bezüglich
der Wirksamkeit des latenten Katalysators kritisch ist.
Eine Katalysatoren/gruppe mit geeigneten Sigenschaften einer
latenten Aktivität sind die KohlenwaBserstoffsulfonsHureester
primärer, vorzugsweise geradkettiger, Alkohole mit 4 bis 14 Kohlenstoffatomen. Beispiele für solche Verbindungen sind die
Sulfonsäureester von 1-Butanol, 2~:fethyl-1-propanol, 2-Methyl-2-nitro~1-iiropanol,
1-Hexanol, 1-Heptanol, 1-Octanol, 1- Decan-
ol, 1-Undecanol und 1-Tetradeeanol. iußerst östive latente
Katalysatoren innerhalb dieser Gruppe sind z.B.: p-ioluol-.
sulfonsäure- und Methansulfensäureester der obigen Alkohole,
insbesondere n- Octyl-p-toluolsulfonat, n-Decyl-p-toluolsulfonat,
n-Ietradecyl-p-toluolsulfonat, ß-Nitroisobutyl-p-toluolsulfonat,
n-Undeeylmethansulfonat und n-Tetradeoylinethaneulf onat.
. Eine andere Gruppe von Verbindungen, die als latente Katalysatoren
in den erfindungsgemäßen Massen geeignet sind, sind die Alkalimetallsalze .von Alkylschwefeisäuren und Kohlenwasserstoff
sulfonsäuren, v/ie ζ»33. ÄthrlsohwefelsHure, 2-Prppan-Bulfonsiiure
und p-Xylolsulf onsäure · Natrium- oder Kaliumsalze
sind besonders zweckmäßig.
Geoignete Katalysatormengen liegen im Bereich von 0,002 bis
2,0 Gew.-#, bes^eohnet auf der Basis der kombinierten Gerichte
der Pölyhyöroxjrl- und Dihydropyranylbestandteile und des
Katalysators» .
Die Menge an Polyhydroxylverbindung. in den flüssigen erfindungsgemSßen
Mas«en soll mindestens 10 Gew.-^ der Gesamtmasse ausmachen,
damit ein starkes festes Produkt nach der Polymerisation in Gogemvart des sauren Katalysators erhalten fvird»
\7enn jedoch der Dihydropyranylgruppen enthaltende Bestandteil
in großen Mengen voz-liegt, so daß zwei oder mehr Dihydropyranylgruppon
fUr jede Hydroxylgruppe anweisend sind, hat es sich

inhibiert v.ird. In diesem Fall muß die Oberfläche der PoIymerisationsraischung
vor luft geschiitst werden, und zwar durch
"bekannte Methoden, wie 2.B. durch Abdecken mit einem Polyäthylen-
oder Polyesterfilm. Bs *ird bevorzugt, daß die
Belagmassen dar Erfindung nicht durch Luft inhibiert werden, aber zum Gießn, Imprägnieren und Vorpressen der ferfindungsgemäßen
Massen kann der ganze Zusammensetzungsbereich verwendet werden,
Die kleinste wirksame Menge an Dihydropyranylgruppen enthaltendem
Bestandteil der erfindungsgera-'Pen Hassen hängt von der
Funktionalität des Polyhydroxylbestandteils ab. ¥?enn die
Funktionalität des letzteren niedrig ist, wie in gerissen
hydroxylhaltigen Vinyl- oder Acrylmisehpolymeren, dann sollte
ein im wesentlichen volles Äquivalent des Dihydropyranylgruppen enthaltenden Bestandteils verwendet werden. Wenn die Funktionalität
des Polyhydroxy!bestandteile höher ist, kann weniger als
ein volles Äquvalent des Dihydropyranylgruppen enthaltenden
Bestandteils verwendet werden, aber in allen Fällen sollten mindestens 5 Qew.-# des Dihydropyranylgruppen enthaltenden
Bestanteils anwesend sein, berechnet auf der Basis der.vereinigten
Girolohte der Polyhydroxyl- und Dihydropyranylbestandteile
und des Katalysators.
Die Erfindung wird zusätzlich durch die folgenden Beispiele
erläutert; alle Teile und Prozentangaben sind in Gewicht ausgedruckt.

Eine Anzahl der Katalysatoren von Beispiel 1 wurde in pigmentierten
Ansätzen verwendet, und die Qualtität der erhaltenen Beläge
wurde untersucht. Die Masse "bestand aus. einer.1i1-Mischung
des Polyesterharzes von Beispiel 1 und 3j4~Dihydro-2H-pyran-2--methyl-3,4~dihydro-2H-pyran-2.-oar'boxylatt
gelöst in 5$ Methylethylketon. Hierauf wurde Rutiltitandioxyd in einer
halben Gewiehtsmenge der Tlischung als Pigment zugesetzt. Verschiedene
latente Katalysatoren wurden zu getrennten Tollen der Belagmasse zugegeben. Die so hergestellten Belagmaseen
wurden auf Stahlunterlagen aufgebracht und dann zu heißgehärteten Earzen gebacken bzw.. gebrannt. Die erhaltenen Beläge
wurden dann, wie es in Tabelle II gezeigt ist, untersuchte Zur Untersuchung der lösungsmittelresistena wurde Aceton verwendet.
Der Biegetest bestand in einein einfachen Biegen um 180°
der Unterlage über eine scharfe Kante. Die Flexibilität wurde durch einen Schlagtest gemessen, wobei der Schlag einer Halbkugel
mit einem Durchmesser von 16 mm mit einer Energie von
4,1 χ 10' dyn cm angewendet vmrde. Die Ergebnisse wurden in
eine V,'ertre?t\e von 1 bis 5 eingeteilt, wobei 5 den besten und
1 den schlecktesten Wert darstellt.

Baispiel 3
Das Hatriumsals von p-Xylolsulfonsäure wurde als Katalysator
in der pigmentierten Masse τοη Beispiel 2 in Mengen von 0,5
und 1,0 iat bezogen auf die !.lasse, angewendet. Die Viskositäten
der Katalysator enthaltenden Belagsusairmonsetzungen wurden mit
einem Brookzielcl-Viskosimeter während einer Zeitdauer von 141
Tagen gemessen, DiG Massen wurden bei Bauntemperatur gelagert.
Aus Tabelle III ist ersichtlich, daß die Hassen eine brauchbar-:
