技术领域
本发明涉及一种驱动平板显示器(FPD)的方法,尤其涉及一种FPD驱动方法,其中将单元帧时分为多个子域以执行时分驱动。
背景技术
本申请要求于2003年10月15日提交的韩国专利申请NO.2003-71897的权益,并将该申请全文引用于此以作参考。
图1示出了常规的表面放电等离子体显示板的结构,所述显示板是带有3-电极表面放电结构的FPD。图2示出了图1的等离子体显示板中的显示单元的实例。参照图1和图2,在常规的表面放电等离子体显示板1的前、后玻璃衬底10和13之间形成有地址电极线AR1,AG1,...,AGm,ABm、介电层11和15、Y电极线Y1,...,Yn、X电极线X1,...,Xn、磷光物质16、分割墙17、以及MgO保护层12。

图3是解释用于图1的等离子体显示板的常规的寻址显示分离(Address-Display Separation)驱动方法的视图(参见美国专利NO.5,541,618)。参考图3,单元帧被划分为SF1至SF8共8个子域用于时分灰度级显示。并且,所述子域SF1至SF8进一步划分为复位时间R1至R8、寻址时间A1至A8,以及放电持续周期S1至S8。
需要复位时间R1至R8以便在所有的显示单元中均匀地分布电荷。
在各自的寻址时间A1至A8期间,相应的扫描脉冲顺序地传送至各自的Y电极线Y1,...,Yn,同时将显示数据信号传送至各自的地址电极线(图1的AR1,...ABm)。因此,如果在传送所述扫描脉冲的同时传送高电平显示数据信号,那么寻址放电就在所选的放电单元中形成壁电荷,而在未选的放电单元中不形成壁电荷。
在各自的放电持续周期S1至S8期间,将放电持续脉冲交替地传送至所有的Y电极线Y1,...,Yn和所有的X电极X1,...,Xn,因此在所选的放电单元中生成显示放电。因此,等离子体显示板的亮度与单元帧的所述放电持续时间S1至S8的总长度是成比例的。单元帧的所述放电持续时间S1至S8的总长度是255T(T是单位时间)。因此,利用单元帧可以显示包含零(0)灰度级的257个灰度级。
在此,将对应于20的1T的周期分配给第一子域SF1的放电持续时间S1,将对应于21的2T的周期分配给第二子域SF2的放电持续时间S2,将对应于22的4T的周期分配给第三子域SF3的放电持续时间S3,将对应于23的8T的周期分配给第四子域SF4的放电持续时间S4,将时应于24的16T的周期分配给第五子域SF5的放电持续时间S5,将对应于25的32T的周期分配给第六子域SF6的放电持续时间S6,将对应于26的64T的周期分配给第七子域SF7的放电持续时间S7,将对应于27的128T的周期分配给第八子域SF8的放电持续时间S8。
因此,通过适当地选择要被显示的子域SF1至SF8,可以显示包含零(0)灰度级(不在任何子域显示)的共256个灰度级。
在用于这种时分驱动的FPD驱动方法中,随着输入的灰度级数据的位数的增长,单元帧的子域的数量也必须增长。但是,由于每单元帧的有限的时间(例如,NTSC类型的图像信号为1/60秒,PAL类型的图像信号为1/50秒),单元帧的子域的数量不能增长。
此外,由于等离子体显示板的初始化时间(诸如图3的复位时间R1至R8)与子域的数量成比例地增长,因此图像的对比度会随着子域数量的增长而恶化。
发明内容
本发明提供了一种平板显示器(FPD)的驱动方法,在所述方法中单元帧被时分为多个子域并执行时分驱动,其中通过使用有限数量的子域可以显示更多的灰度级。
在下面的描述中会阐述本发明的附加特征,而这可从该描述中部分地变得明显或通过实践本发明来获知。
本发明公开了一种驱动平板显示器的方法,按每帧向所述平板显示器输入k位的灰度级数据,所述灰度级数据包括每位均具有低加权值的第1位至第j位,以及每位均具有高加权值的第(j+1)位至第k位,所述方法包括下述步骤:将单元帧时分为多个子域;通过多个帧显示灰度级数据的所述第1位至第j位(j是一个大于2的整数),以及通过所述多个子域显示灰度级数据的所述第(j+1)位至第k位(k是一个大于4的整数)。
本发明还公开了一种驱动平板显示器的方法,所述方法包括:将单元帧时分为多个子域,每单元帧输入灰度级数据的第1位至第j位,以及每单元帧输入灰度级数据的第(j+1)位至第k位。通过至少两帧的至少一个子域来显示灰度级数据的第1位至第j位,以及在一个单独的帧中显示灰度级数据的第(j+1)位至第k位。j是一个值大于或等于3的整数,k是一个值大于或等于5的整数。

图4是图1的等离子体显示板的驱动设备的框图,所述驱动设备执行根据本发明的一个示例性实施例的驱动方法。
参照图4,所述驱动设备包括图像处理器56、逻辑控制器52、地址驱动器53、X驱动器54、Y驱动器55。所述图像处理器56将外部图像信号转换为数字信号并生成数字图像信号,诸如8位红(R)、绿(G)、蓝(B)图像数据、时钟信号、以及垂直和水平同步信号。控制根据本发明的一个示例性实施例的驱动方法的所述逻辑驱动器52响应于从所述图像处理器56接收到的内部图像信号而生成驱动控制信号SA、SY以及SX。所述地址驱动器53接收并处理所述地址信号SA,生成显示数据信号,以及将该信号传送至地址电极线。所述X驱动器64接收并处理所述X驱动控制信号SX并将其传送至X电极线。所述Y驱动器55接收并处理所述Y驱动控制信号SY并将其传送至Y电极线。

由于具有小于1T的周期的低灰度级数据(其对应于第1位至第j位的灰度级数据(j是一个大于2的整数))可以由多个帧来显示,因此本发明的一个示例性实施例中的放电持续时间设定得比常规的时间长。现在将参照图6、图7、图8、图9、图10、图11和图12来详细描述。

图12是用于举例说明本发明的一个示例性实施例的驱动方法的时序图,其中由四个帧的各自的第一子域SF1和第二子域SF2显示对应于7T/8(T是单位时间)的第1位至第j位灰度级数据(j是一个大于2的整数)。例如,如果将第一帧FR1中对应于7T/8灰度级的低灰度级数据输入至显示单元,那么所述显示单元仅在所述第一帧FR1至第四帧FR4的第一子域SF1和所述第一帧FR1至第三帧FR3的第二子域SF2中显示。同样地,如果将第二帧FR2至第四帧FR4中的另一个灰度级数据输入至所述显示单元,那么所述显示单元将在所述第二帧FR2至第四帧FR4的所选的子域中显示。但是,在第一帧FR1至第四帧FR4中,可以显示所述第一帧FR1的对应于7T/8灰度级的低灰度级数据。
如上所述,根据本发明的一个示例性实施例的FPD驱动方法,由多个帧来显示第1位至第j位的灰度级数据(j是一个大于2的整数)。从而,单元帧的子域数量可以仅仅设为灰度级数据的第(j+1)位至第k位(k是一个大于4的整数)。因此,使用有限数量的子域来显示更多的灰度级是可能的。
本发明的一个示例性实施例描述了用于显示第1位至第j位的低灰度级数据的四个帧。但是,本发明并不局限于此,也可以使用不同于四个帧的其他帧来显示第1位至第j位的低灰度级数据。
对本领域的技术人员来说,在不脱离本发明的精神或范围的情况下可以在本发明中作出不同的修改和变换,这是很显然的。因此,本发明旨在涵盖本发明所附的权利要求及其等效物的范围内所提供的的修改和变化。

Claims (4)

1、一种驱动平板显示器的方法,按每帧向所述平板显示器输入k位灰度级数据,所述灰度级数据包含每位均具有低加权值的第1位至第j位以及每位均具有高加权值的第(j+1)位至第k位,所述方法包括:
将单元帧时分为多个子域;
由多个帧显示所述第1位至第j位灰度级数据;以及
由所述多个子域显示所述第(j+1)位至第k位灰度级数据;
其中j是一个大于2的整数,以及
其中k是一个大于4的整数。
2、根据权利要求1所述的方法,其中:当由所述多个帧显示所述第1位至第j位灰度级数据时,使用所述多个帧的每一帧的至少一个子域。
3、根据权利要求2所述的方法,其中:
当将所述单元帧时分为所述多个子域时,所述单元帧被时分为具有低加权值的第1个至第p个子域,以及具有高加权值的第(p+1)个至第q个子域,以及
当由所述多个帧显示所述第1位至第j位灰度级数据时,在所述每一帧中使用所述第1个至第p个子域中的至少一个子域,
其中p是一个大于2的整数,以及
其中q是一个大于4的整数。
4、一种驱动平板显示器的方法,包括:
将单元帧时分为多个子域;
每帧输入第1位至第j位灰度级数据;
每帧输入第(j+1)位至第k位灰度级数据;
由至少两个帧的至少一个子域显示所述第1位至第j位灰度级数据;以及
在一个单独的帧中显示所述第(j+1)位至第k位灰度级数据;
其中j是一个值大于或等于3的整数,
其中k是一个值大于或等于5的整数。
