在传统的像素结构中,电源线路26是一个行导线,并一般是又长又细的。显示器一般是通过承载有源矩阵电路的基底反向发射的。这是优选的实施方式,因为EL显示元件的理想阴极材料是不透明的,从而发射来自EL二极管的阳极一侧,并且把这一优选阴极材料靠有源矩阵电路放置是不理想的。形成了金属行导线,并且对于反向发光显示器来说,它们需要占用显示区域之间的空间,因为它们是不透明的。例如,在一个12.5cm(直径)显示器中,它适用于便携式产品,行导线可以近似11cm长,20μm宽。对于一个典型的0.2Ω/方的金属片电阻,这给出了对于金属行导线1.1kΩ的线路电阻。一个明亮的像素可以引出大约8μA,并且引出的电流沿着行分布。电压降能够通过从行的两端引出电流降低到某种程度,并且EL材料的效率的改善能够降低引出的电流。不过显著的电压降仍然存在。这一问题对较大的显示器会更糟,即使全部线路电阻能够保持相同也是这样。这是因为如果分辨率相同,每行有更多的像素或者较大的像素。沿着电源电路的电压变化改变驱动晶体管上的栅极-源极电压,并且从而影响显示器的亮度,尤其是引起显示器中心变暗(假定行源自两端)。而且,因为由行中的像素引出的电流是依赖于图像的,所以通过数据校正技术校正像素驱动电平是困难的,并且失真本质上是不同列像素之间的串扰。
发明内容
根据本发明,提供一种有源矩阵电致发光显示器件,包括一个显示像素阵列,每个像素包括:
一个电致发光(EL)显示元件;和
有源矩阵电路,包括至少一个用于驱动通过显示元件的电流的驱动晶体管,
其中该器件还包括:
用于确定将在一个帧周期中显示的图像的整体亮度电平的装置;和
用于根据为像素提供驱动电平的各个输入信号并根据整体亮度电平而控制每个像素的至少一个驱动晶体管的装置。

该整体亮度可以是对全部像素的整体驱动电平或一个平均值的测量,并且这依赖于具体的实现方式。该方法使得通过降低用于通常的亮图像的最大亮度将总电流保持在限制之内。
控制该至少一个驱动晶体管可以包括根据整体亮度电平处理像素的输入信号并接着把处理后的输入信号施加到像素。例如,输入信号可以用一个查找表修改,查找表的地址根据输入信号和整体亮度电平进行选择。
如果输入信号是数字形式,控制该至少一个驱动晶体管能够包括根据整体亮度电平控制数字输入信号的数字到模拟转换,并接着把模拟输入信号施加到像素。
如果输入信号包括一电流,控制该至少一个驱动晶体管可以包括使用一取样晶体管取样输入电流,并从并联的取样晶体管和驱动晶体管提供电流给显示元件,其中给取样晶体管和驱动晶体管中的至少一个的电源电压根据整体亮度电平改变,从而改变提供到显示元件的总电流。

应当注意这些图是概略的并没有按比例画。为了图中的清晰和便利,这些图的部分的相对尺寸和比例在尺寸上表现出放大或减小。
具体实施方式
本发明提供一种有源矩阵电致发光显示器件,其中确定将显示的图像的整体亮度电平,并且在对应于该图像的场周期内的最大像素驱动电流根据整体亮度电平进行控制。尤其是,所有像素的像素驱动电平能够根据整体亮度按比例决定。
限制由像素抽出的最大电流会减少串扰。已经发现图像最后的失真实际上改善了,而不是与原来相比更差。
图3示出了实现本发明的第一方式。像素驱动信号提供给信号处理器30,它根据图像中所有像素的组合(完整的)亮度修改它们。修改后的驱动信号32用于以传统方式驱动显示器34。处理器调整像素驱动信号(它可能是电流或电压),从而峰值像素电流以及因此亮度对于其中只有一小部分非常亮的图像比对于其中大部分都亮的图像更高。这提供了图像数据的处理并不要求硬件的修改。
图4更详细的示出了图3的一个可能的实施方式。提供一个场存储器36来存储一个完整图像的输入信号,并且同时将图像所有像素的输入信号在求和单元38中求和,以确定图像的整体亮度。从而,求和单元输出组合的像素驱动信号用于存储在场存储器36中的图像。
一查找表(LUT)40用于根据求和单元38的输出端的整体亮度电平修改存储的图像像素驱动电平驱动。尤其是,与完整场周期上的输入信号的亮度值的总和成比例的信号42传送到一个查找表地址生成器44,它产生查找表的地址,存储的图像的像素驱动电平在用于驱动显示器之前施加到查找表。查找表40实质上包括两个或多个表,其提供不同的特征,并且根据亮度输入选择哪个表用于转换数据。场存储器要求执行一帧延迟。
通过处理像素驱动信号,能够用硬件(例如使用查找表)或用软件执行很多不同的驱动方案。
图5示出了三种可能的驱动方案。在图5A到5C每一个中,图表示出了如何修改一个输入像素驱动电平驱动以提供输出。输入和输出可以简单的看作一个原始亮度电平和修改的亮度电平。
在图5A中三个特征1到3是不同的线性增益值。曲线1不提供修正并且用于能够容许最大亮度的低亮度图像。曲线2和3对在越来越大区域上明亮的图像通过不同的比率降低像素亮度。
在图5B中,曲线2和3是非线性的并且在图5C中,所有三个曲线是非线性的。在每种情况下,曲线1用于最低亮度图像,曲线3用于最高亮度图像。
图5C的特性能够用于伽玛处理,从而获得闪光效果。需要该伽玛校正是因为在当前电视系统中,输入视频信号被处理从而显示在CRT显示器上。在这样的CRT显示器上,输入信号和输出亮度L之间的关系是L=(输入数据)γ,其中γ在2和3之间,产生如图5C的非线性形状。如果使用的显示器具有不同的关系,输入数据应当被相应校正,这通常通过查找表完成。该校正机构可以适于通过图4所示的图形控制显示像素的最大亮度。视频数据存储在存储器(36)中。确定图像的整体亮度电平(38)并且由LUT生成器(44)改变伽玛校正LUT(40)以根据整体亮度电平设置特定最大亮度。输入数据和显示亮度之间的全部关系应当具有图5C的形状。具有低整体亮度电平的图像(曲线1)将比具有高整体亮度电平的图像(曲线2或3)有更高的最大输出值。
图5示出了用于图像的三种可能的缩放比例值,但是当然还有很多其他可能值,只有一个限制,即在具有亮度电平的驱动特性中的连续改变。
在图4中,图像修改由查找表执行。当然,像素驱动信号的修改可以在一个算法或其他软件执行的控制下进行。例如,图5A的线性情况能够简单的用一个带有从整体亮度得出的增益控制信号的乘法器(即,对乘法器的一个控制输入)实现。
在图4中,模拟驱动信号在用于驱动显示器之前修改。图像数据将通常原来为数字形式,而在这种情况下,它能够更加容易的用软件操作。
另一种替换方式如图6所示,其中用于把数字图像数据转换为模拟驱动信号输入的数模转换器电路被修改。用于D/A转换器52的控制电压50由电压提供电路54产生。例如,D/A转换器能够是一个电阻排,并且确定电阻排上的电压的输入电压能够进行转换(示意性用56示出)以改变输出范围,并且输出电压的方式通过数字输入字的范围改变。接着控制56根据图像的整体亮度进行。像素驱动信号再次在施加到像素之前进行修改,但是在D/A转换阶段。
图像数据的操作提供执行几种附加功能的灵活性。这可以优化该系统用于特定显示器类型或特定图像类型。
能够结合定时控制器,它防止从一场到下一场增益突然改变。如果增益的小阶梯被实现,则当检测到整体亮度改变时,它可以理想的从当前的查找表(或算法,或D/A控制)向各级中理想的一个缓慢步进,以避免图像中的突出。可以应用相同改变速率来像降低增益一样增加增益,或者它们可以不同。
整体亮度可以比图像的某个部分更多被考虑,例如图像的中心。如果行和列导线的连接在显示器上都做了,这可能是适当的,因为边缘的电阻比接近显示器边缘的像素低很多,从而由这些像素引出的电流对串扰问题影响较小。因此“整体亮度”可以从图像中心的一部分得出,要不可以包括对总和贡献较小的接近边缘的图像部分的加权措施。
在以上例子中,图像数据在以传统方式施加到传统显示器件之前进行修改。也有可能对像素结构进行修改,以提供图像修改。
图7示出了一种布置,其中图2的电压驱动像素布置被修改以按照本发明提供峰值亮度的控制。图2中所有的电路元件在图7中用相同的附图标记重复。图8示出了该电路的传输特性。
该电路通过与第一驱动晶体管22平行提供一个第二驱动晶体管来修改,并且该电路在它自己的相应第二电源线路62和EL显示元件2之间连接。第一和第二驱动晶体管因此能够提供不同的电源电压。电源线路26具有施加给它的固定电压V1,但是施加到第二电源线路62的电压V2能够根据图像内容改变。
如果整体图像亮度低,则电源电压相等,V1=V2,并且传输特性陡(见图8中的顶部曲线),因为两个驱动晶体管是并联的。如果整体亮度增加到一个点,其中具有额外的电压降的问题出现在导线中,则电压V2被降低,从而降低栅极-源极电压。这表示第二驱动晶体管60在输入驱动电平的低数值(即,低栅极-源极电压)并且根据精确的V2的值关闭,第二驱动晶体管60开始对较高亮度电平导通,但当V1=V2时仍然操作在较低电流。因而,图8中的传输特性陡度较小并且峰值亮度较低,因此峰值电流流动。
在该结构中,由两个驱动晶体管提供的组合电流通过设置一个电源电压的电压而改变。
图2和7的电路只是电压驱动像素的一个例子,并且对本领域技术人员来说其他可能性将很显然。
图9示出了按照本发明修改的电流驱动像素布局。
像素1具有用于对列导线6上的输入驱动电流取样的电流取样电路。电流取样电路具有并联的一电流取样晶体管70和驱动晶体管72,每个连接到相应的电源线路74,76。电流取样晶体管70和驱动晶体管72能够向显示元件2提供电流。
将被取样的电流通过一个地址晶体管16提供到像素,并且存储电容器24存储驱动晶体管72的栅极源极电压,如在图2中的像素布置中。
为了寻址图9的像素电路,两个电源线路上的电压相等,即V1=V2。地址晶体管16导通,并且第一隔离开关78把输入电流与显示元件隔离开。第二隔离开关80关闭,以允许电荷流到存储电容器。当电路已经达到一个稳定状态,由列导线6引出的电流由取样晶体管70发出,并且存储电容器保持取样晶体管对应的栅极-源极电压。如果两个晶体管70、72互相匹配,对相同电流这也对应于驱动晶体管72的栅极-源极电压。
但是,电流反射镜能够与具有不同尺寸的两个晶体管对称,在这种情况下,像素自身提供一些增益。
所有像素用V1=V2编程(即,充电的存储电容)。而且,EL显示元件2的阴极由开关82保持在高状态,从而把所有显示元件的偏压反转。一旦已知平均或组合的亮度,功率电平V2根据整体亮度重新设置。
如果整体亮度低,则功率电平V2设置为恰好低于V1,以便明亮的像素(至少)从取样晶体管和驱动晶体管接收电流。如果整体亮度高,则功率电平V2设置的较低,从而完全关闭取样晶体管。
设置V2的值之后,开关82切换到地以开启显示元件,并且隔离开关78闭合,开关70打开,从而两个晶体管都能够向显示元件2提供电流。
像素传输特性再次由V2的选择修改,并且电流反射镜像素具有优势,即晶体管特性的非均匀性不再是一个问题(像它使用图2的电路时)。在这种情况下不需要一个场存储器。相反,一个累加器能够在编程阶段期间把驱动电流相加,使得估计出整体亮度。因此,场周期分为两部分,当LED关断时是一个像素编程部分,当没有像素进行编程时是一个LED驱动部分。从而像素用作场存储器。在像素被编程时,驱动电路中的硬件将累加数据以找到整体亮度数字,直到所有像素已经进行编程的时候。这允许第二电源线路的电平进行设置并且接着驱动LED。
隔离开关当然用一个晶体管实现。
实际上,本发明包含确定将在一个帧周期上显示的图像的整体亮度;并根据原始像素驱动信号以及根据整体亮度电平控制每个像素。从上文来看将很明显,有很多方法能够执行本发明,可以用硬件或软件和用数字或模拟领域。本发明能够用于电压或电流寻址方案。
对本领域技术人员来说很明显有各种修改。例如,以上电路使用PMOS驱动晶体管。也有NMOS实现方式。
Claims (25)
1.一种有源矩阵电致发光显示器件,包括一显示像素阵列(34),每个像素包括:
一电致发光(EL)显示元件(2);和
有源矩阵电路,包括至少一个用于驱动通过显示元件(2)的电流的驱动晶体管(22),
其中该器件还包括:
用于确定将在一帧周期中显示的图像的整体亮度电平的装置;和
用于根据为像素提供驱动电平的相应输入信号并根据整体亮度电平来控制每个像素的该至少一个驱动晶体管的装置;
其中用于控制该至少一个驱动晶体管的装置包括一信号处理器件(30),用于根据整体亮度电平处理用于像素的输入信号;
其中信号处理器件包括一场存储器(36),用于存储一幅图像的输入信号,和一求和单元(38),用于把场存储器中的所有图像像素的输入信号进行求和以确定整体亮度。
2.权利要求1所要求保护的器件,其中信号处理器件适于使用伽玛特性用于根据整体亮度电平处理输入信号。
3.权利要求1所要求保护的器件,其中信号处理器件还包括一个查找表(40),用于根据整体亮度电平修改存储的图像的输入信号。
4.权利要求3所要求保护的器件,其中信号处理器件适于根据整体亮度电平计算或选择查找表。
5.权利要求1所要求保护的器件,其中信号处理器件进行操作以降低最大亮度电平,任一像素响应于一幅图像的整体亮度的增加而被驱动到该最大亮度电平。
6.权利要求1所要求保护的器件,其中信号处理器件包括数模转换器电路(52),用于把数字输入转换为输入信号,并且其中数模转换器电路能够根据整体亮度电平进行控制。
7.权利要求1所要求保护的器件,其中所述至少一个驱动晶体管包括并联的第一和第二驱动晶体管(22,60),它们分别连接在相应的电源线路(26,62)和EL显示元件(2)之间,到像素的输入提供给第一和第二驱动晶体管(22,60)的栅极,并且其中第一驱动晶体管(22)提供有第一电源电压(V1),并且第二驱动晶体管提供有第二电源电压(V2),至少一个电源电压可根据整体亮度电平改变。
8.权利要求7所要求保护的器件,其中到像素的输入通过一个地址晶体管(16)提供到第一和第二驱动晶体管的栅极。
9.权利要求7或8所要求保护的器件,其中第一电源电压(V1)固定,而第二电源电压(V2)可变。
10.权利要求9所要求保护的器件,其中第一和第二电源电压相等。
11.权利要求1所要求保护的器件,其中有源矩阵电路包括用于取样输入驱动电流的电流取样电路,电流取样电路具有分别并联连接到相应的电源线路(74,76)的电流取样晶体管(70)和驱动晶体管(72),该电路被布置为电流取样晶体管(70)和驱动晶体管(72)中的每个能够向显示元件(2)提供电流,其中电源线路的至少一个电源电压能够根据整体亮度电平改变。
12.权利要求11所要求保护的器件,其中电流取样电路可操作在两种模式,第一模式,其中相同的电压施加到两个电源线路(74,76)并且输入驱动电流被取样,和第二模式,其中在至少一个电源线路(74)上的电压(V2)根据整体亮度电平选择。
13.权利要求1、3-4、6-8、11-12中任一个所要求保护的器件,其中整体亮度由用于显示器的所有像素的显示元件的驱动信号确定。
14.权利要求1、3-4、6-8、11-12中任一个所要求保护的器件,其中整体亮度由用于显示器的选定像素的显示元件的驱动信号确定。
15.权利要求1、3-4、6-8、11-12中任一个所要求保护的器件,其中整体亮度由用于显示器的所有像素的显示元件的驱动信号的加权组合确定。
16.一种寻址包括一显示像素阵列的有源矩阵电致发光显示器件的方法,其中,每个像素包括一电致发光(EL)显示元件(2)和包括至少一个用于驱动通过显示元件的电流的驱动晶体管(22)的有源矩阵电路,该方法包括:
确定将在一帧周期中显示的图像的整体亮度电平;和
根据为像素提供驱动电平的相应输入信号并根据整体亮度电平,控制每个像素的至少一个驱动晶体管(22);
其中控制该至少一个驱动晶体管(22)包括根据整体亮度电平处理像素的输入信号并接着把处理后的输入信号(32)施加到像素;
其中确定整体亮度电平包括存储一幅图像的输入信号并对它们求和。
17.如权利要求16所要求保护的方法,其中处理输入信号包括用一个查找表修改输入信号,查找表的地址根据输入信号和整体亮度电平进行选择。
18.如权利要求16所要求保护的方法,其中处理输入信号通过使用显示元件阵列的伽玛特性来执行。
19.如权利要求16所要求保护的方法,其中控制该至少一个驱动晶体管降低最大亮度电平,任一像素响应于一幅图像的整体亮度的增加被驱动到该最大亮度电平。
20.如权利要求16所要求保护的方法,其中输入信号是数字形式,并且控制该至少一个驱动晶体管包括根据整体亮度电平控制数字输入信号的数字到模拟转换,并接着把模拟输入信号施加到像素。
21.如权利要求16所要求保护的方法,其中输入信号包括一电流,并且其中控制该至少一个驱动晶体管包括使用一取样晶体管(70)取样输入电流,并从并联的取样晶体管(70)和驱动晶体管(72)提供电流给显示元件,其中给取样晶体管(70)和驱动晶体管(72)中的至少一个的电源电压根据整体亮度电平改变,从而改变提供到显示元件的总电流。
22.如权利要求16所要求保护的方法,其中有源矩阵电致发光显示器件进一步包括电流取样电路,该电流取样电路可操作在两种模式,第一模式,其中相同的电源电压施加到取样和驱动晶体管(70,72)并且输入驱动电流被取样,和第二模式,其中到取样和驱动晶体管(70,72)中的至少一个的电源电压根据整体亮度电平选择。
