Par les moyens ainsi décrits, le second arbre auxiliaire 100 doit faire un tour complet seulement pour chaque mouvement .de dégagement d'em brayage du levier coudé 117, 123. Le second arbre auxiliaire 100 présente, entre ses extrémités;

23. Il est facile à comprendre due la mani velle du second arbre auxiliaire 100 fait. durant son mouvement de sa position de point mort arrière à sa position de point mort avant, tourner la roue d'entraînement, en une seule fois, de la position qu'elle oc cupe à la fin de la couture à la position initiale dans laquelle elle est prête à recom- niencer un nouveau cycle d'opérations;

Buttonhole sewing machine. The various operations of a complete buttonhole production cycle, as usually performed by an automatic button sewing machine, include operations performed prior to sewing, the actual sewing operation. and operations performed after sewing.
For example, when use is made of a certain sewing machine construction for tailor-made buttonholes, the pre-sewing operations include clamping the work, cutting and spreading the slit or buttonhole slit. and re-tensioning the sewing thread, while subsequent sewing operations include releasing the thread, triggering the thread trimmer, opening the work clamp, and returning the sewing mechanism back to the initial position.
The object of the present invention is a buttonhole sewing machine having a disengaging device for stopping the sewing mechanism, a driving wheel connected to the main shaft of the machine to produce relative movements between. the sewing mechanism and the work holder, during sewing. and making a complete revolution during each cycle, and a shaft for controlling the knives, which, operates independently of the sewing mechanism, is stationary during sewing and subsequent operations of a buttonhole production cycle and constitutes an auxiliary shaft.
According to the invention, the buttonhole sewing machine is provided with a second shaft actuated independently (the sewing mechanism, this second auxiliary shaft being stationary during the preliminary operations and during sewing. Being caused to rotate after sewing and actuating a mechanism arranged pour.act on the drive wheel., to make it execute the last fraction of its single turn.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention.

Fig. 6, \ i and 8 are details in perspective of the starting and stopping mechanism of the auxiliary shaft shown in figs. 4 and 5; Fig. 9 and 10 show details of the same mechanism, in elevation;
Fig. 11 is a view of the cam and of the part which cooperates with it to actuate the tension release device, trigger the thread cutter and cause the opening of the clamps of the work holder: FIG. 12 is a perspective view of the porfe-book: FIG. 13 is a side elevation of the clamp closing mechanism, and FIG. 14, 15 and 16 show constructional details of the thread trimming mechanism and e-thread pin for the needle thread.
In the embodiment which is shown in the attached drawing. the frame of the machine comprises the hollow rectangular base 1 (fig. i and 2) on which is formed a foundation plate 2, from one end of which rises the hollow upright 3 for the usual arm 4 which ends by the socket head 5. Inside the base 1 extends, in the length thereof, the main shaft pal. 6 for the color mechanism. This shaft carries an angle wheel <B> 7 </B> which meshes with an angle wheel 8, of the same size, attached to. the lower end of the vertical shaft 9 which turns in the upright 3.
The vertical shaft 9 acts, by means of gears, multipliers 10, in the ratio of one to two, to control the control shaft 11 of the needle holder. which is connected at one end to the needle holder 12, with reciprocating motion, by means of the usual crank 13 and connecting rod 14.
The talking mechanism of the machine may be of any suitable type. In the present case, it comprises the right needle, with reciprocating movement, 15, carried by the needle holder 12 and the curved needle from below, 16, which is, supported in the reel 17.
Under the foundation plate 2 is mounted, on the axis 18, the well-known drive wheel <B> 1.9 </B> which has, in its underside, a groove-cam 20 (fig. 5) ,. acting by a fraction of a turn of the driving wheel to move the button 21 (fig. 3) and, by means of the usual transmissions with it, to turn the talking mechanism while it is sewing on around the extreme eyelet of a buttonhole. At the end of the seam, the drive wheel revolves another rotating movement to complete its single turn and. at this time, it acts to bring the chat mechanism back to. its initial position.
The button 21 is supported by a lever arm 22. fixed by one end to the vertical pivot shaft 23 and connected, by its opposite end, by means of the connecting rod 24, to the angled lever 25, which carries the usual toothed sector 25. 'meshing with a 25 "pinion (fig. 1) mounted on the reel 1'7. The vertical pivot shaft 23 carries a crank arm 26 (fig. 9 <B>) </B> which is connected. of a connecting rod 2 <B> 7 </B>, with an angled lever 28 on which is formed a toothed sector, 29, engaging with the pinion 30, which is connected to the hub 31 from which hangs the guide arm 32 having a groove in which is engaged a button 33 provided on the needle holder.
The buttonhole cutter mechanism comprises the usual upper and lower knife levers 34. and 35 (fig. 1) case are advanced and closed to cut the buttonhole incision in the sewing position by means of the usual connections with the blade closing cams. cams, one of which is shown at 36 (fig-. i and 3 <B>) </B>.
and with the knife key advancement and retraction cam 37, all these cams being carried by the auxiliary shaft 38 which is actuated, independently of the sewing mechanism, by a pulley 39 (fig. 2 and 3), continuously rotating by by means of a well-known single-turn automatic clutch mechanism 40. When this clutch mechanism of the blade drive shaft is brought into action during the first phase of a shift cycle. buttonhole production, the pulley 39 makes the shaft 38 make a single complete revolution, in the known manner.
The work carrier of the present machine comprises upper and lower work clamp elements, 41 and 42 (fig. I, 13 and 14), the upper elements of which are supported on the front ends of the arms 44. The elements or feet work clamp. upper 41 are clamped on the work, during the first phase of the buttonhole production cycle by means of a lever 45 having a fixed pivot 46 and actuated by a cam 47 mounted on the component shaft. of <B> knives </B> 38. During the first part of the unique turn of this last tree.
the cam 47 causes the lever 45 to tumble, forcing its front end to press from top to bottom on the arm 48 (fig. 1.2 and 13) and to cause the latter to oscillate to bring it to the clamping position of the pliers. The arm 48 is attached to one of the swing shafts 49 which, in turn, is connected to the shaft 49 'via the usual connection, fork and dowel, 50. When the feet of clamping are tightened on the work, the tooth 51, provided on the lever 52, penetrates the notch 53 of the stop plate 54 and locks the clamps in the clamping position, the lever 52 being articulated to the crank arm 55 which is fixed to the oscillating shaft 49 '.
When the lever 52 is moved from bottom to top, the tooth <B> 51 </B> is withdrawn from the notch 53, thereby allowing the clamps to open. It will be seen, referring to fig. 14 to 16 inclusive, that one of the feet 41, presents an extension 57 comprising the upper and lower bars, slightly elastic, 58 and 59 which are rigidly held together by the screw 60 and are held to. the desired distance by means of wrench la, washer 61 and the screw head 62.
In a boss 63, rising key the bar 58, turns an axis 64 clans the lower end face, recessed, of which are secured the tails of the overlapping sections 65 and 66, constituting a compound wire gripper and wire cutter blade. The outer part of the section (the blade 65 has an edge 65 'that slopes sharply: from inside out, from the adjacent edge, to provide an angle to guide the wire to the pinch point. The edge of the cutting section 66 of the compound blade in question has, at the angle in question, the concave neck edge 67, which shears the wire against the edge 68 (the blade 69 held on top of the bar 59.
The compound blade is able to move inside the space between the bars 58 and 59 and to substantially fill this space, the section 65 cooperating with the lower wall of the upper bar 58 to clamp the wire .
To actuate the thread clamp and thread cutter elements, the axis 64 carries, secured to its upper end, the crank arm 69 in the drilled end of which the screw 70 screwed to the front end of the rod 71 which extends rearwardly. along the gripper block 72, and passes freely through the pierced end of the support arm 73.
The rod <B> 71 </B> is surrounded by a collar 74 to which is subject one of the ends of a spring <B> (the </B> tension 75 whose opposite end is, subject to the arm 73.
A stop collar 76, secured to the rod 71, is likely (to meet the arm 73 and stop the backward movement (or to gently close the thread trimmer-thread clamp) (the rod 71 under the influence of spring 7r) Rod 71 has, on its underside, a notch 77 in which small penetrate the end of a stop arm 78, raised by a res out,
to retain the thread trimmer and thread clamp elements in their removed or or green position. L f @ rt # that the. wire cutter and wire clamp is ferrni'u, a thrust exerted from behind in a% -arit on the rod \ i1 will serve to recall this blade and to free the free end of the needle wire. Although this can be accomplished at.
by hand, it is preferable to provide a means of automatically pushing the ti-e <B> '-i </B> E_n forward .. This mechanism includes the ljra #, '79 1 j which hangs from a tree trans- -,
tubular ersal 80 to which a movement cl'o - (# illation is imprinted by means of a taras @ '1, extending from bottom to top, carrying the button 82 which is engaged in a groove-oarne 83 practiced clans cam cylinder 84 mounted on shaft 11, controlling the needle holder.
After the arm <B> 7 </B> 9 has received a single impulse to open the clamp, the button. 82 is ejected from the cam ra.inure and is immobilized in this ejected position.
The main shaft 6 of the stitch forming mechanism is disengaged by means of an automatic disengaging mechanism comprising a rocking start and stop lever 85 (fig. 1, \? And 3), which is fixed. fi. an axis 86 journaling in the ears of the range 8'i. The lever 85 is biased towards the stop position by the spring 86 'and it is held in an on position (fil-.
1 and \?), Means said latch 87 '(fig. 2) whose upper end engages over a wear plate 88' provided on the arm; -, 8 which is fixed ii the axis 86 and extends from the latter forward.
The arm 88 carries, at its free ex- ity, a roller 89 which is lowered by aine @ anle 90, mounted on the control shaft an @ the knife end, to start the nnc \ c -anisnre @de formation of points during the description part of the single turn of the tree (the corirmnih, <I @@ s knives.

As people skilled in the art know perfectly well, automatic release mechanisms of this type include a slide 93 (fig. 1, 2 and 4) which, pushed up and down by a spring, is mounted on the stop lever. 85 and has a tooth 9 i that comes. over the peripheral surface 95 of the clutch ring 96 when the stop lever swings to the stop position. Continuation of the rotational movement of the main shaft causes the slider 93 to be lifted as the cam portion and. inclined outwards 9'i (-fi-. 8 <B>) </B> of the. clutch crown passes under the. tooth 94.
Finally, tooth 94 falls into the stopper, 98 of the clutch ring gear as the steep shoulder 99, forming; one of the side walls of this notch meets the. side face (the tooth 94 and stops the movement of the main shaft. This well known up and down movement of the slider 93 is used in the present machine for a purpose which will be described. .
The present machine comprises a second auxiliary shaft, 100 (fig. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9), which rotates inside the base 1 and transversely to the latter in the staves 101 and 102 (fig. . 3) and which is used to perform certain operations subsequent to. sewing. This shaft is normally fixed during sewing and is forced to make one turn only during the third, or last, phase of the buttonhole production cycle.
On an extension of the shaft 100 freely rotates the control disc <B> 103, </B> driven by a continuous rotational movement, by an automatic crimping device # at one turn. One of the faces. side of the disc 103 is recessed to form a peripheral rim 104 in which there is a series of control teeth 105 pherpherically spaced and directed from the outside in.
The control disc 103 also has a one-piece hub 1.06 with a toothed wheel 10'7 which meshes with a pinion 108 attached to. the well-known pulley 39 which rotates freely on the first auxiliary shaft, or blade control shaft 38.
The parallel auxiliary shafts 38 and 100 transverse to the base of the machine, and the control discs, connected by gear, coaxial with these shafts, are parts which constitute a simple, compact and efficient auxiliary mechanism, capable of being combined. rnanded by means of a single pulley on the side of the machine and used to accomplish any of the various operations, or all of the various operations, which precede and follow sewing.
To the second auxiliary shaft 100 is fixed, in a place adjacent to the control disc 103, a controlled disc 109 (fig. 3, 4, 5 and 6) in which is formed a radial slide 110, in which is mounted a slide. 111 carrying, on one of its sides, a clutch tooth 112 which extends laterally in the recessed part of the disc or control plate. On its op posed side, the slide 111 carries an arm tooth S which passes through the slot 114 made through the controlled disc 109.
A spring 115 (fig. 6) mounted on the disc 109 and bearing by its free end against the internal end, notched of the clutch tooth 112, is used to urge the slide 111 from inside to outside., To bring thereby the clutch tooth 112 to a position in which it will be met by one of the control teeth 105, thereby coupling the shaft 100 to the source of motive force.
On the screw 116 (fig. 2 and 4) turns an angled screw having a hanging arm 117 which carries, at its lower end, a stop block 118X (fig. 3, 7, 8 and <B> 10) </ B> having an inclined face forming a cam 118, a retaining shoulder 119 and a stop shoulder 120. On the arm 117 pivots, at 121, -fin spring latch 122 whose lower end is at a small distance from the top of the stop shoulder 1.20.
The other arm, 123, of the elbow lever, is pulled up and down by a coil spring 124 (Figs. 2 and 7) which acts resiliently to hold the stop block in a position such as the stop tooth 113 is retained in its withdrawn position by the retaining shoulder 119 and is locked, so as not to be able to move either up and down or up and down, by the latch 122 and the stop shoulder 120 respectively.
In the normal stop position of the parts thus described, the slide 111 is in its extreme internal position, with the clutch tooth 112 disengaged from the clutch teeth 105 of the control disc 103. The displacement of the angled lever, by means which will be described, so as to move the arm 9.1 \ ï away from the adjacent face of the control disc 103, disengages the stop shoulder 120 and the retaining shoulder 119 from the tooth of stopping 113 of the slide 111, thus allowing the latter to move from inside to outside, under the action of its spring 115; to introduce the clutch tooth 112 into engagement with one of the control teeth 105.
As the controlled disc 109 approaches the end of a single turn, the angled lever has been returned to its initial position by the action of the spring 124 and the more positive action of the inclined face 125 (fig. . 6) of the cam rib 126 on the bent end 127 (fig. 2, 3 and 7), of a side arm 128 ass.u-. thrown at the lower end of the arm of the vier 117,
thereby bringing the face 118 of the stopper block 118X onto the path (the stop tooth 113 by means of which the slide 111 is pushed out and out to disengage the clutch tooth 112 from the control teeth 105. As the stop tooth 113 comes to its initial position, it engages the stop shoulder 9.20 and is prevented from rebounding by the end of the latch 122 which comes into position. activity when the stop tooth 113 passes it.
By the means thus described, the second auxiliary shaft 100 must make one complete revolution only for each clutch release movement of the crank lever 117, 123. The second auxiliary shaft 100 has, between its ends;
a crank 129 jfig. 2, 3, 4 and 5) which is embraced by the e, -, - end forming a collar of a connecting rod 130 whose opposite end is articulated, by a screw 131, to the head 132 of an ankle whose . cylindrical shank 133 is engaged in openings. of aligned bearing formed in the spaced laterally projecting parts, 134, 135, of a lever arm 136 pivoted on a screw 137 which, concentric with the head 18 carrying the drive wheel, is screwed into this head.
A necklace 138, assu jetti à. the tail 133 of <B> there </B> ankle in question, between the parts. protrusions 134, 135 of the lever arm 136, serves to retain this che town in its working position. As the screw <B> 131 </B> and the plug 133 have their axes arranged substantially at right angles, it forms a universal joint between the connecting rod 130 and the lever arm 136.
At its free end, the lever arm 136 carries a spring-loaded pawl 139, the end of which bears resiliently against the smooth part of the cylindrical surface of the driving wheel in which is mounted a curved plate 140, in which one or more teeth 141 are formed, which are placed in such a way that, when the key release lever 85 is released by the action of the key release lug 91 to stop the sewing mechanism,
at least one closed teeth 141 has passed under the end of the pawl, 139 and is in position to be actuated by said pawl, as is rel) shown 1) <c3. the positions in rows closed teeth 1.41 and key the release lug (-li @ iichement 91 (fig. 3).

It is easy to understand due to the cranking of the second auxiliary shaft 100 made. during its movement from its rear neutral position to its front neutral position, turn the drive wheel, at one time, from the position it occupies at the end of the seam to the initial position in which it is ready to start a new cycle of operations;
this final and rapid movement of the driving wheel is preferably used, in the present case, to return the sewing mechanism to its initial position by means of the usual transmissions of which it was previously question.
The second auxiliary shaft 100 with which the present machine is provided can be used for performing various other operations during the final phase of a buttonhole production cycle. For example, tree 100 a, in this case.

The bar (the lift 154 is formed, at its lower end, with an ear 166 (fig. 2, 3 and 5) extending laterally and arranged to carry on the key peripheral part one of the cam plates. 153.
On the foundation plate <B> 1 </B> pivots, at 167 (fig. 1, 3 and 12), the rear end of the lever arm <B> 168 </B> which is elastically lowered by the extension front 169 of a wool spring 170 screwed to the foundation plate 1. The anterior end, extending from bottom to top and out in 171, of the key lever arm 168, overhangs the foundation plate 1 in a position where it is immediately below the rear end of the stop lever 52 which immobilizes the clamping feet in the clamping position.
A lever <B> 172 </B> is adjustable - moves attached to the lever arm 168, by means of the pivot screw <B> 1131 </B> and the screw 174 which enters a slot in the end previous of this lever and.
is screwed into the lever arm <B> 168. </B> From the lever 172 rises, from outside to inside, an arm I <B> î5 </B> which overhangs the foundation plate 1 and which is arranged under the tail of the stop lever '78 for the rod 71 precedeniineiit described. The arm extending towards the rear of the lever 1 \ ï2 can be lowered, to raise the extension of the 71_-175 key release of the thread trimmer and the feet (the clamping.
by means of the lever 176 which pivots on the upright 3, at 177, and including the rear arm. laterally angled. 1 \ i8 enters the horizontal slot 179 (fig. 1 <B>) </B> (the key bar raises 154.
The two arms of the lever 1'76 are adjustable with respect to each other. From the lifting bar 154 extends towards the rear, between the ends of this bar, an arm 160 (fig. . 1, 2 and 3) having, at its free end, a vertical slot 161 in which is freely engaged a screw 162 which is screwed into the lower end of the hand lever 163 pivotally secured to a boss 164,
formed at the end one heaven having a slot 1.80 in which is engaged a screw 18l screwed into the auger.
The previously described parts are set so that when the bar <B> (the </B> s (, lifting is lifted, it acts first to release the tension, second to release, _tick the cut. -thread and, finally, to open the work clamps.
In order to ensure the proper spanning of these operations in the tuiiï.ps., The cam l53 has a top part of tension release 182 (fig. 11) which merges into a top part of the locking mechanism of the knife <B> 183, </B> which is followed by a rest 184 which merges into the upper part 185, opening the work clamp. The upper opening part of the work clamp is followed by a depression <B> 186 </B> which allows the extensions 171,
1.75 of knife control and clamp open enough to ensure that the tweezers can be closed and the knife returned to position, but not enough to reestablish tension on the needle thread. Following the depression 186 is a long concentric portion, or rest, 187 extending over substantially three quarters of the perimeter of the cam and ending in a steep gradient 188.
Before starting the machine, the ear 166 rests on the end of the concentric part, or rest, 187 of the cam, as shown in FIG. 11. When the release lever 85 is brought to the starting praition by the action of the usual cazlie 90 (fig. 1) on the control shaft of the knife, the lower end keys the bar ( the lifting 154 is moved forward by the action of the screw 162, carried by the lever <B> (the </B> clutch,
and the ear 168 falls on the slope 188 at the position shown in dotted lines in FIG. 1.1, thus allowing the spring 189 to effect the downward movement of the lifting bar. i54 and the reestablishment, which is the consequence, of the tension on the wire. the notch or notch 157 of the lever 155 being thereby brought into coincidence with the pin <B> 155 </B> for releasing the tension.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The work is placed in position under the raised work clamp feet and the machine is started by means of the usual pedal device, not shown, which activates the shaft. buttonhole cutter control. During the single revolution of this buttonhole cutter drive shaft, the work clamps close, the buttonhole slit or incision is cut and spread or spread and the release lever 85 is brought to the key on position (fig. 1) by action of the cam 90 on the roller 89 mounted at the free end of the lever arm 88,
the lock 87 'taking on the lever arm 88 and holding the release lever in the on position. The tension on the needle thread is restored when the ear 16ü is pushed over the slope 1.88 by the key movement of the key release lever.
As the seam progresses, the drive wheel receives a relatively slow, step-by-step turning movement through the usual connections by graining with the star wheel 190 (fig. 1i in which the dowels, diametrically opposed, 191, carried by the lower end of the vertical shaft 9. In the seam of the extreme eyelet of the niere button, the sewing mechanism performs a rotating movement under the effect of the usual connections with the driving wheel.
When the buttonhole is completely sewn, the release lug 91 meets the lever 92 and disengages the arm 88 from the latch 87 'thereby allowing the release lever to be returned to the off position. At this time, teeth 141, provided on the drive wheel, have come to a position just in front of pawl 139 (Fig. 1).
The upward movement of the slide 93, carried by the release lever, engages the latch 1.45 of the lever 143 under the side arm 123 of the angled lever 117-123. At the moment when the stop tooth 94 falls into the notch 98 of the clutch ring 96, to stop the color mechanism, the descending slide 93 recalls the hanging arm 117 of the crank lever, thus bringing the second shaft auxiliary 100 in action to make it perform its single turn during which the tension is released, the thread cutter is triggered, the work clamps are opened and the drive wheel is quickly returned to its initial position,
without noise or shock, as described above.
