Sewing machine with thread clamp device. The object of the present invention is a sewing machine provided with a device for pinching the tip. free of needle thread before starting to sew.
According to the invention, a cam continuously rotating during sewing acts. no intermediate members on the thread clamp device to make it release the pinched end of the needle thread after the first descent of the needle, but before the seam has progressed sufficiently to make it impossible to pull said end of the thread by a traction exerted on the needle wire.

The frame of the machine comprises the hollow base 1 (fig. I and 2) from which rises the mon as carrying the tubular arm 3 which ends with the head 3 '. Inside staves 4 journals the shaft 5, controlling the buttonhole cutter, that is. arranged in the lower part of the upright 2. A clutch device is provided to connect the shaft 5 with a source of driving force so that it makes only one revolution in each buttonhole production cycle. Shaft 5 is seen from cams 6 and 7 to impart oscillation or rocking movements to the knife holders 8 and 9.
In the base 1 is mounted the drag wheel 10 which imparts movements to the work holder. The drive wheel also acts., Via the arm 1.1, the vertical shaft -12, the arm 13 and the connecting rod 14, to oscillate the angled lever 15, one of the arms of which carries a toothed sector 16. , meshing with pinion 17 to rotate tubular needle holder 18 when sewing around the end eyelet of a buttonhole, or to rotate needle holder to. reverse direction, in order to bring it back to its original position, at the end of the sewing operation, in the usual manner.
The work holder comprises the slide 19 (fig. 1, 2 and 3) supporting the part 20 which supports the lower clamping plates 21, 21 ', supporting the work under the pressure of the fabric presser feet 22 and 22'. The feet 22, 22 'are articulated to the spring clamping arms 24, 21t to which are fixed the pivots 25, 25' which are free to oscillate in blocks 26, 26 'secured on the plates 21, 21', respectively.
In ports provided in the blocks 26, 26 'are mounted aligned oscillating shafts, 27, 27', each of which carries a cam acting on the corresponding arm 24, 21Y, in antagonism to the lifting springs of the cloth press, of which one is shown at 28. The wedge-bone shafts are connected together, to move in unison, by means of arms 29 and 0, one of which is provided with a pin 31.
embraced by a fork 32 on the other. The thread cutters and thread clamp are mounted on an extension of the presser foot 22 '. The extension comprises the upper and lower bars slightly, elastic, 34 and 35, rigidly. secured together by screw 36 and held at the desired spacing by means of washer 37 (fig. 8) and screw head 38.
In a bearing of a boss 39, rising from the bar 34, journals a pin 40 (fig. 7 to 9) in the extreme underside, recessed, of which are secured the tails of the overlapping blade sections, 41 and 42, which constitute. a combined thread clamp and thread cutter blade.
The outer end part of the blade section 'r1 has an edge 43, to provide an angle to guide the wire at the pinching point. The edge of the cutting section 42 of the compound wire gripper and wire cutter blade has, below the angle just mentioned, a concave cutting edge, 44 (Fig. 6), which shears the wire against the edge 45 of the blade 716 (fig. 9) pushed into the top of the bar 35.
The compound blade 41, If2 is set. to move in the space com taken between the bars 34 and 35 and to fill it substantially, the blade. clamping 1i1 cooperating with the lower wall of the. upper bar 34 to pinch the thread.
To actuate the thread clamp and thread cutter elements, the axis 40 carries, secured to. its upper extremity, the crank arm 47 in the drilled end of which passes freely the screw 48 screwed years. the anterior end of the rod 49 which extends along the block 26 'and. passes freely through the pierced end of the arm 50 (fig. 2, 3, 4 and 4b), fixed to the rear side (read block 50 'by a screw 50 "<B> (fi-. </B> 41) and te). The block 50 'is fixed to the pivot 25' by the pin 50x (fig. 4b).
The rod 49 is surrounded by a collar 51 (fig. I, 2 and. 4) to which is attached one of the ends of a tension spring 52, the opposite end of which is, attached to the arm 50. A collar stopper 53, attached to the rod 49, meets the arm 50 and stops the backward movement, or the closing movement of the thread-clamp thread cutter of the rod 49 under the action of the spring 52.
The rod 49 has on its underside, near its rear end, a notch 54 (fig. 2, 4 and 4a) offering a steep shoulder. 55, and a shoulder. inclined, 56. This notch is arranged to receive the end of the locking lever arm 57 raised by a spring to retain the thread trimmer and thread clamp elements in their or green or withdrawn position.
To the side of the block 50 '(fig. 4 and 4c) is secured, by a screw 59' and a stud 59 "the plate 59, the upper edge of which is notched, at 60, to provide a stop shoulder 61 engaged. by the over-plumbing lip 62 (fig. 2, 4 and 4b) of the spring-loaded locking bar 63 articulated, at 64, to the crank arm 65, fixed to the oscillating shaft 27 ', for closing the stuffer .
Lip 62, when engaged with shoulder 61, retains the closed or lowered presser feet, and when locking bar 63 is raised, shafts 27 and 27 'are free to rotate as presser feet are raised to release the item. The block 58 (fig. Ii) serves as a stop to the movement of the arm (the crank 65 as the opening is released.
A second over-plumbing lip, 64 '(fig. 4 and 4b), provided in the locking bar 63, cooperates with the inclined edge 63' of the fixed plate 59 to determine a vertical movement of the bar 63 during the movement effected. by the shaft 27 'for the closure of the stuffer and ensures that the lip 62 will not meet the rear end of the plate 59 but will first come into contact with the upper edge, 66, of this front plate. fall into notch 60.
The spring 67, which surrounds the shaft 271, solicits this. shaft towards the opening posi tion of the stuffer. The locking bar 63 carries, at its rear end, a vertically adjustable stop screw 68 (Figs. 2, 3, 4 and 4b).
To the drive wheel 7.0 (fig. <B> 11) </B> is attached a cam plate 69 having an inclined part 70, for triggering the thread trimmer, and an inclined part 71, for opening the thread. cloth press, which act successively., to. at the end of a buttonhole production cycle, to print a lift motive. in two stages to the arm 72 (fig. 2 and 4), pivoting at 73 on the table 1.
The arm 72 has an extension 73 '(fig. 2, 3 and 4), extending under the stop screw 68 and it carries an arm 7î, for triggering the thread trimmer, which arm is articulated to the arm 72 in 75 and through the slotted anterior end of which passes a screw 76 which screws into the arm 72 to allow the arm 74 to be adjusted relative to the arm 72. An extension 77 of the arm 74 is located under the shank 78 of the locking lever < B> 57 </B> which retains the thread cutters and. thread clamp in the withdrawn position.
The arm 74 and the stop screw 68 are. adjusted so that the inclined part, 70, of the cam releases the thread trimming and thread clamp element after which the action of the inclined part <B> 71 </B> effects the opening of the cloth press. The leaf spring 79 keeps the arm 72 lowered.
In the present embodiment (the invention. It is provided, to effect "the automatic release of the thread clamp, the following mechanism: On the underside of the arm 3 is secured a bearing 80 (fig. 2 and 3) , in which journals a tubular shaft 81 through which extends a longer solid shaft 82. At one end of the tubular shaft 81 is formed a short pendant arm 83 (Fig. 2, 3, 3a and 4), which is provided with an arcuate slot, 84, through which passes a screw 85 screwed into the cleat arm 86, the upper end of which surrounds the shaft 81.
The lower end of the cleat arm 86 is flattened to engage with the rear end of the rod 49 and push it from the position shown in dotted lines, to the position shown in solid lines at 1a. fig. 4. At the other end of the tubular shaft 81 is attached an arm 87 (fig. 1 and 3) which rises therefrom and which has, at its upper end, a boss 88 drilled to receive a man. 89, the inner end of which can be engaged by the groove 90 provided in the cam cylinder 91 mounted, inside the arm 3, on the needle control shaft S.
The opening made in the boss 88 is enlarged to receive a spring 92 which surrounds the man 89 and which bears, by one of its ends, against a collar 93, provided on this man, to push the latter elastically into the cam-groove 90. A coil spring 94 urges the arm 87 towards the stop block 95 secured to the side of the arm 3.
The man 89 can be held in its withdrawn position, or disengaged from the cylinder-cam 91, by means of the locking arm res out 96, the upper end of which is posed to enter the notch 97 of the good man 89. The arm latch 96 is pinned to. one of the ends of the solid shaft 82, at the opposite end of which is subject a pendant arm 98 (fig. 2, 3 and 4), hollowed out to receive a coil spring 99 and a snowman 100 which has a ex beveled lower end and is prevented from rotating in the arm 98 by means of the screw 101 screwed into the man 100 and not sant.
through an oblong opening 7.02, made in the side of said arm.
The man 89 is released, and he is allowed to enter the cam groove 90, under the action of a lateral projection 103 (fig. \ ', 3 and 4) provided on a collar 103x fixed to the connecting rod 14 who is. set in motion in the direction of the. arrow (fig. 4) to return the needle holder to its initial position at. end of a buttonhole production cycle. During this movement of the connecting rod 14, the projection 7.03 meets the good man 100 and causes the shaft 82 to oscillate, thereby freeing the good man 89.
The groove 90 of the cam cylinder 91 is cut with initial parts and. spaced terminal 104 and 105, respectively (fig. 5 <B>) </B>, producing stop or rest times, and an inclined portion 106, arranged to key- place the stick 89 towards the back of the arm in order to open the thread clamp at the desired time after starting the machine.
At the initial and terminal ends of the groove 90 are formed ejection ramps 104 'and 105', the second of which ends in a raised surface 107 which ejects the stick 89 thereby allowing the latch 96 to penetrate into it. the notch 97 of this man and to hold it in a withdrawn position, with its end. internal <B> slightly- </B> slightly removed from the cylinder-cam. The flange 108, formed on the cam cylinder and running parallel to the end part, producing rest, 105 serves to prevent lateral return movement of the man 89 and the arm 87 under the influence of the spring 94. up to that the snowman has been completely ejected from the cam groove and rusty worm in its ejected position.
The forming mechanism (the stitches of the machine shown in the drawing is of known construction and so are the means employed to rotate it in the seam of the end # eyelet of the buttonhole. The upper needle 109 (fig. 1, 10 and 11) is carried by the hollow needle holder 18 which is controlled by means of the connecting rod 710 connecting it with the crank button 11.1 provided on the crank arm 1.1 \? carried by the 'rotary control shaft S (needle holder.
The chi over needle 7n9 co operates with the looper or hook 113 and the curved underside needle 17.4 (fi. <B> FI </B> and 11).
The present machine is provided (the automatic disengagement mechanism comprising an arm 175 (fia. \ ') Carrying at its end the roller 1.16 which cooperates with the eccentric outer edge 117 of the attached plate 118, by means of screws f J9 # to the face of the camwheel 120 which is (, niplo @ -éc,
to move the swivel block t) e> @ the buttonhole cutting levers 8 and, n from the withdrawn position to the front position. This disengaging mechanism comprises éI-aleement the usual idler pulley 121 (FIG. 2) and the clutch ring 122 used for. Engage this pulley to the main shaft from below 123 to start the machine. when the arm 115 is pushed back up and down.
The top thread follows its usual path, from the spool which supplies it, through the guide 124 (fig. 1) and the tension device 125 from where it passes through the usual guides, one of which is shown in 126 and which present the wire to the rotating lifting discs 127 between which is disposed the usual rejector plate 128. The wire then passes through the opening provided at the top of the column 129 then, from rear to front, to the hollow needle holder 18 through which it descends to needle 109.
Across the path followed by the thread from the column 129 to the needle holder 18, is movable a lateral protrusion 130 of a pulling rod 131 sliding in the head 3 'and carrying an extension piece 132 which protrudes at the end. 'outside through a slot 133 provided in said head, and enters the slot 134 formed in the front end of the pivoting arm 135, - at 136, on the side of the arm 3. A lever 137 (fig. 1) also pivots on the arm 3, at 136, and includes a short arm extending forward with a slot.
138, through which passes a screw 139 screwed into the arm 135 in order to allow this arm to be adjusted in relation to the lever 137. 1st arm extending, from top to bottom and rearwards, from the lever 137 is disposed above a side peg 140 carried by the knife holder 8 and serving, when this lever rocks, to pull the pulling arm 131 up and down and to measure the desired length of wire. needle pulled from the spool.
In the operation of the present machine, starting at a point of one buttonhole production eycle after the machine has been turned on and sews the first side of the buttonhole, the right man 89 is retained by the latch 96 in in its withdrawn position and the arm 87 is held against the stopper 95 by the spring 94, thereby retaining the cleat arm 86 in its withdrawn position, as shown in FIG. 4.
The thread gripper and thread trimmer elements 41 and 42 are retained in the open position and pulled back by engaging the latch 57 with the shoulder 55 of the notched shank 49, as shown in Figs. 4 and 4a. The fabric clamps are closed on the work and locked, as shown in fig. 1. As the stitch forming mechanism is rotated to sew around the end eyelet of the buttonhole, the connecting rod 14 is biased in the opposite direction of the arrow in fig. 4,
so that the ear 103 is forced to go beyond the beveled end of the man 100 and to assume the position shown in dotted lines in said figure. Once the seam has been sewn along the second side of the buttonhole and has come to the end of it, the action of the stitch forming members is stopped and the rotation of the camshaft continues. The drive 10 brings the inclined portion 70 into engagement with the trigger lever 72 to trigger the latch 57 thereby releasing the returning rod 49.
rapidly back under the influence of the spring 52 and causes the thread cutters and thread grippers, 42 and 41, to cut and pinch the top needle thread, as shown in fig. 7, the needle thread being around looper 7.13 when cut. Continuation of the movement of the drive wheel forces the upper part 71 to perform the second step of the upward movement of the lever 72 to lift the locking bar 63 and open the fabric presses.
As the stitch forming mechanism is rotated in reverse direction to return to its original position at. at the end of a button production cycle, the protrusion 103, moving. in the direction of the arrow (fig. 4), meet the right man 100 and oscillate the shaft 82 to remove the locking arm 96 from the notch 97 of the man 89, thereby allowing the spring 92 to push back this good man engaged with the initial end of the cam groove then stationary <B> 90, </B> as shown in fig. 3 and 5.
When we put it back. machine on the way after having introduced a new piece to be sewn, the knife holder levers 8 and 9 are advanced, during the single key turn the shaft 5, in order to cut the key slot the buttonhole by pulling. by doing this even up and down the pull rod 131 and measuring the required length of loose thread drawn from the spool. The needle 109 rises first from the position shown in FIG. 1 at the top of its stroke, then descends, preferably missing the first loop of the needle thread from below.
As the needle rises, the hook 113 grasps the loop of needle thread and presents it. to the needle from below, as is. shown in fig. 10, tan say that the top needle comes up from the work.
In this case, at about the time when the needle holder 18, which is raised, and other thread handlers have absorbed the measured amount of loose thread from the upper needle and this thread needle from above is substantially stretched, the inclined portion 106 of the cam groove 90 has acted on the man 89 to make the cleat arm 86 wink by forcing it to strike the rod 49 and to move quickly this rod o back to front to release the pinched end of the needle thread loop. The lock <B> 57 </B> penetrates into the notch forming the shoulder 55 of the rod 49 and maintains the thread clamp open.
In this case, the needle holder, which continues to move up to the worm, the take-up lever and perhaps also the looper or hook all act more or less to absorb a sufficient amount of needle thread to pull up and down. low the initial end thereof to a practically invisible position, preferably substantially flush with the top of the work, as shown in fig. 11.
Preferably during the second revolution of the control shaft, S, of the needle holder, the ejection ramp 105 'of the cam cylinder 91 acts to push the man 89 back to its inactivity position, after which this good - man goes beyond the extremity (-you re edge 7.08 and allows the return of the <B> 87. </B> arm and key parts connected to it, to the initial position.
Although it is preferable, it is not necessary to release the key end of the initiated thread during the first key back-and-forth movement of the needle, since experience has shown that the essential condition to be satisfied is that the initial end of the needle thread is released again before a sufficient number of stitches have been formed.
It has been found that if the thread is not loosened before the completion of about four stitches, it will be gripped so tightly by the stitches already formed that it cannot be pulled back by a pull. on the thread running through the needle at the last stitch formed.
Although the wire gripper and wire trimmer elements are preferably constructed in separate sections to facilitate their manufacture and their maintenance in good working order, this is not necessary and the elements just discussed. do not need, either, to be disposed and related to each other to see each other in unison, as shown here.
